 As we've seen, thanks to those extra cores, the 8700K has unsurprisingly aged much better, and should continue to age much better than its quad core predecessor. While piecing this content together, I went back and watched my original 8700K review to see what I actually said about the CPU when I first reviewed it, and I found the conclusion quite interesting given how this has all played out over the past few years, and here is the bulk of that conclusion. Intel's new mainstream flagship Core i7 is a beast. For gamers seeking the ultimate solution, there is simply nothing better than the Core i7 8700K

 Anyway they didn't, and what we ended up with was a rushed 8th gen series with 2 more cores tacked onto the high end. The results though were very impressive. The 7700K was already a gaming beast, but with 2 more cores, the 8700K was set to retain that title for a much longer period. From day 1, in a day 1 review, I called it the king of gaming, and although it was technically superseded by the 9900K and then the 10900K, it's still a very capable gaming processor even today, I doubt you'll be feeling the need to upgrade any time soon

 Out of the box, we're looking at a 45% performance increase, and then once overclocked, that margin does reach 50%, as our 8700K clocks to 5GHz much more easily. We also see that overclocked, the 8700K is roughly on par with the Ryzen 7 2700X, so a very solid result for the 6-core processor. Of course, though, as you'd expect, the newer 3rd gen Ryzen series does fare better. Single core performance is roughly on par with the 7700K, and with both overclocked to a similar frequency, the OC results are also much the same

 Again, games on a budget will opt for Ryzen as it is cheaper and will deliver similar performance without much trouble. Still, the 8700K has proven to be much more of an all-rounder than the 7700K ever was. Overall, I really like Intel's new Core i7 8700K. So a positive review then, and I think if you did pull the trigger on an 8700K, you'll be looking back thinking you made the right choice, especially if gaming is the priority

 One thing is for sure, you're going to have to delid and use Conductonaut if you want to find the voltage headwall but I knew that before I bought it.  Yes, I would buy this again, and again, and again. I've been toying with a Core i5-8600k recently and it doesn't even come close to overclocking as well as this CPU.  The most my 8600k can do 5ghz with AVX offset at -2 with 1

 You can actually shore the difference up between the 8700k and this 8086k by using 3200mhz CL14 memory. This CPU is for the people who are willing to Mod or spend the extra dough on trying to get their numbers as high as they can get.  You're welcome to buy one of these if you want to because it's your money but be warned.

 I've been toying with a Core i5-8600k recently and it doesn't even come close to overclocking as well as this CPU.  The most my 8600k can do 5ghz with AVX offset at -2 with 1.376V.

 If you're going to spend extra on this for OCing, then you might as well spend extra on the motherboard by getting something along the lines of an ASRock Taichi or Professional, Maximus X, or the Gigabyte Gaming 7. The effect the extra 300mhz has on gaming is very minimal and you'd barely notice the difference even if you're trying to push a 144hz monitor. You can actually shore the difference up between the 8700k and this 8086k by using 3200mhz CL14 memory. This CPU is for the people who are willing to Mod or spend the extra dough on trying to get their numbers as high as they can get

8 minutes on the 1700, both with 3200MHz CL16 memory. The 8700K completes the Monkey Head render 7.6% faster than the R7 1700, and that closes the gap in this case. Overclocking both produces a 24

 First of all, we got the worst possible 8700K sample that could be made. The overclocking headroom on ours was much worse in terms of voltage versus frequency than what many of our peers got. So while I am envious of the other CPU samples out there, it at least gave us an excuse to step through a couple hours worth of trying every trick in the book to get the thing to clock a little bit higher. We ended up stuck at about 4

 Bringing us to value and it's here that Coffee Lake shines. When system cost is accounted for compared to Kaby Lake the Core i7-8700k is on par for gaming that's good but at over a hundred dollars less than that the Core i5-8400 is the one that's going to be really disruptive be it for gamers or entry-level content creators. In productivity the two actually switch places. The 8700k takes the crown here while the 8400 sits in the back seat next to Ryzen

 Curiously it seems to fare slightly worse overall but it's nothing to cry about. More interesting is the Core i5-8400 riding into town with 7700k like performance at an i5 price. As for our 4k gaming tests well these are some super boring if beautiful and high resolution graphs. Let's talk overclocking

 The biggest problem is how expensive things become when you factor in all the things you'll probably need to buy. Remember at the very least that you'll need to buy an entirely new motherboard with the 8700k. Potentially DDR4 and a high end cooling solution assuming you don't already own these. Due to the price I would only advise upgrading to this if you are currently running on an extremely dated CPU

Good all around CPU but not worth the price for most.

 Just keep away from slow bargain basement memory at 2133 MHz. Coffee Lake i5s and i7s even allow the locked chips to run with 2666 memory and that's what I'd recommend as a baseline. This benchmark shows us running stock clocks at 2133, 2666 and 3000 MHz bandwidth and I've tossed in a 5 GHz overclock running with slower memory. There are two major takeaways from this kind of testing

 But again, you'll note that there's not a huge boost with the 8700K at 5 GHz. Now personally I'd be sticking with all core turbo and decent memory as a good compromise but I also noted that memory bandwidth on your DDR4 isn't hugely impactful this time around across our suite of games. Just keep away from slow bargain basement memory at 2133 MHz. Coffee Lake i5s and i7s even allow the locked chips to run with 2666 memory and that's what I'd recommend as a baseline

 Okay and the final big topic I want to cover. Basically if you already have an i7 should you upgrade? Well this is a huge gen on gen upgrade in my opinion but I ran some benches showing how older chips compare to the stock 8700K. Now to make it a fair fight I've run them all at 4.5 GHz and paired them with fast RAM
