The blade is sturdy and of good quality. The plastic handle is cheap plastic junk that offers a slippery poor grip. Be prepared to spend an additional $40 to $60 to upgrade the handle.  2/16/22 update: the sheath is poorly designed

Blade nice but plastic handle is junk

 Which brings me to firesteel...  Anyone who's tried to make a fire with this or other similar Becker blades, knows you can't strike ferrocerium off the back of the knife

 I used it a little afterwards, and rubbed a thin coat of mineral oil onto the blade afterwards to further prevent rust after washing some dirt off. Oiling the blade makes it look even darker, if that matters to you.  One thing to note, while sheath retention is still just as firm - the blade still didn't fall out of the sheath when violently shaking it upside down - removing the factory finish will make it rattle a lot more. Stuffing a piece of foam inside the sheath should take care of it though

 But, because you have to pour out enough gel to basically submerge the blade (handle removed), there's more excess, which means more opportunity for chemical burn. Use a thick pair of rubber gloves, like you would when working with acid, and you'll be fine. It's the clean-up process after that gets a bit worrisome.  After stripping the factory finish, I gave the blade an apple-cider vinegar bath for about two hours, which gave it a nice deep gray patina to help prevent rust

Finally, on to the ugly: the sheath. It's not a looker, being some sort of injection molded plastic attached to nylon, but my problem with it is with function rather than form. I suspect there might be some sort of glass fiber in the plastic, because I found it was actively dulling my blade. I thought I was going nuts, but after sharpening to a hair-popping edge, the knife would get too dull to shave after nothing more than being sheathed and unsheathed a few times to do very small cutting tasks

 This is 1095 cro van steel. Debatably a hair better than regular 1095, but at the end of the day it's the same in practical use. Tough as nails and can be beaten to hell without breaking, just ok in edge holding though very easy to sharpen in the field, and very prone to rusting without the proper care. Hence that powder coat

 The rest of the criticisms I've thrown its way are more my opinion and based on my preference, but the problem with the cheap sheath dulling the edge is inexcusable and not something you can live with. So a full star gets removed for that. Other than that sheath, I love the purchase and would absolutely recommend it.

A Beefy Workhorse of a Blade

 A good sheath is critical for easily holstering your knife when not in use and especially while outdoors. Well, the sheath that was included with this knife was pure junk and not useable. The sheath I received is actually a hazard as the knife will not fully sit in the hard plastic sheath. Trying to fully sit the knife in the sheath causes the plastic sides to separate and push the knife back out of the sheath as you remove your hand from the knife

 I don't know how widespread this issue is, but based on some of the other reviews it happens with more frequency than it should.  Even though I like the knife itself, I am only giving it 2 stars as the knife is worthless to me without a sheath I can use and depend on. I am very disappointed in Ka-Bar, this experience will forever tarnish my view Ka-bar as a bastion of craftsman knife making in America.  At this point, I can either return the knife, buy a separate sheath, attempt to contact Ka-Bar for a replacement or make my own sheath

  I love the outdoors, roaming through the mountains and exploring nature's wonders. I especially enjoy the unused path, areas rarely traversed or occupied by others. However, this poses a risk, especially for a female that often treks alone - you never know what you'll come across and it's always good to carry along some accessories for the unexpected. A good knife that you can strap to your side, thigh, calf, or in an easily accessible spot on yourself is a key accessory that any good outdoor enthusiast should always have and know how to handle

25 inches thick. While I am not a fan of powder coated blades, it's okay and something I can live with. Since it's made with 1095 high carbon steel, I expect it to be easy to sharpen like my old Gerber.  I suspect that a sheath is an afterthought for many, but not for me

Very Disappointed - good Knife, but the included hard-shelled sheath is junk

 The BK2’s merits have been covered in number of other reviews but here I’d like to address some of its flaws and my efforts to resolve some of those issues.  The first problem and complaint you will encounter is the sheath, which is Kydex molded with a nylon belt loop. Interestingly, the sheath is too tight and the loop is too loose. The sheath can be loosened, the way it was formed, by using a hair drier (or heat gun) to loosen the sheath hold and cycling the knife repeatedly

 Additionally, I sprayed some penetrating oil to help it along and inhibit rust (this is a carbon steel knife).  I was able to stiffen and shorten the sloppy belt loop by adding a cheap (& otherwise useless) 99 cent 7in1 credit card tool as a stiffener and two 1” ranger bands to secure it.  The grivory handle can be slippery when wet or gripped by a sweaty hand. If like me, you’re not willing to shell out an additional 40 dollars for Micarta handles (scales) or 65 for a G10, then try adding a ranger band (bike tire tube)

  None of this is a problem for me, as I mentioned earlier, I was looking for a short stout blade. I would have preferred a natural finish to the black. However, I’ve read the coating can be easily removed with paint stripper but that it hides some machining flaws. I am quite certain there are better knives out there, but not for the money

There are a great many reviews on this knife so I’ll try to be brief and point out a few things that I’ve learned. I was looking for a reasonably priced knife that balanced form and function. I wanted something solid (full tang) but I did not want to carry around a sword either. I appreciate the knife’s stout design, as I’m not an Aussie on walkabout in NYC

  The sheath is useless because you can't get the knife out with one hand. It's so stiff that, once I inserted the knife, I had to tie a loop through the bottom of the sheath to put my foot in so I could pull the knife out. You can not get it out by pushing with your thumb without first inserting a wedge into the slit to pry it open. This is the reason I gave it a 4 rating, although that was probably worth a further downgrade to 3 specifically because of that problem

Not a good bushcraft knife for your backpack

 There is no padding or bubble wrap to hold the blade and sheath securely. Also, there is a cardboard covering that slips onto the knife edge. While in transport it is easy to imagine that lack of padding + rubbing against a cardboard covering for the knife will make it dull. There is no reason for you to have to sharpen a knife right out of the box

 I have a simple kitchen blade I carry with me that is carbon steel and easy to spark a fire with, and doesn't cost $100! The only attribute that gives this knife actual cutting power is its heavy weight + the velocity in which you swing it. The tip can go through paper with a bit of force, that is why I am not giving it one star rating. It cleans off decently as well, and doesn't seem to get rusted easily although I do not like the coating that has been applied to the blade itself and can understand why so many other reviewers have removed it previously. Poorly constructed, the knife is extremely difficult to pull out of the sheath and if you're weak and/or tired from walking miles on a hike, the last thing you want is to struggle with your sheath as a wild animal or zombie is nearby. When using the belt strap option, the sheath/knife is flopping around like a cheerleader during a pep rally

High Hopes for a Disappointing Product

 I tried heating the sheath material up to expand it some, I also made a leg strap...this helped some when pulling the knife it out and made it less floppy , but when your working your way through a lot of brush and brambles, alternating between this knife and a machete or other brush clearer, it sure becomes extremely inconvenient to have to use both hands to sheath your knife when your constantly having to use it every 10 to 15 feet of brush

 To fix the two problems above would cost half again to double the knife cost. Because I'm thrifty when possible, I am going to work with the handle to stipple it, which should give it a good gripping texture. There are a couple of fixes for the sheath on the forums and/or youtube using a surplus army belt and a stiffener that I think will fix the sheath, and I plan to make a spacer to releive the tension so it will come out one-handed. If that doesn't work I'm a hacker in leather, I'll just make my own sheath

Excellent knife, junk sheath.

 It is full tang. it is all black ( the one I have). The blade is covered with a material to protect the carbon steel. It is excellent for batoning
