  All ionizing detectors use a tiny amount of radioactive Americium to ionize the air in the detection chamber. In a nutshell, smoke particles disturbe this ionization and that’s how the detector detects a fire.  Do NOT be worried about radioactive material; the amount involved is microscopic since it only needs to ionize the air inside of the detection chamber which is less than one cubic inch. Also, don’t be worried about the whole idea of ionizing

 The detector should be replaced ten years after that date. The detectors I received in January of 2020 had March of 2018 dates-of-manufacture, so I will only get eight years of use out of them.

 And the the last three of these I bought were — while doubtlessly new in the box — two years old according to their manufacturer’s label. So, they will only be able to be used for eight years, 20% less than one should get.  All ionizing detectors use a tiny amount of radioactive Americium to ionize the air in the detection chamber. In a nutshell, smoke particles disturbe this ionization and that’s how the detector detects a fire

 But Americium decays quite quickly. In ten years, the Americium in this detector will loose enough of its radioactive to reduce the sensitivity of the detector below acceptable level. It’s not practical to replace the Americium, so the whole detector must be replaced.  Every ionizing smoke detector has its date-of-manufacture labeled on it

I received the Kidde Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm as a Spark Reviewer from Walmart and my review is unbiased.

We are installing this Kidde Smoke Alarm high enough on the wall in proximity to the kitchen.

I would say that The Kidde Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm is pretty good at detecting smoke; and in my opinion, it would be best used in households where there is not much cooking done since this unit is easily triggered. Now, that is why it is hard for me to give this unit a fair review; I do a lot of pressure cooking and grilling and sometimes these activities will trigger the alarm. On the other hand, if you have children or forgetful people in the house, detecting early signs of fire will be a greater benefit than any minor annoyance.  When I pushed the test button it actually startled me and I had to cover my ears! This alarm only beeps...it does not talk like our dual co one downstairs

This seems to be a pretty nice smoke alarm. It is different from the Kidde one we have downstairs (which is a CO detector too). It came with a battery and mounting hardware and it was functional in minutes. It is very loud
