The Design

 I don't know if i really want to do pros and cons on these, because i didn't really view them that way. The budget was so low at under a hundred dollars.  So don't expect chest thumping levels of basic and we were talking about a four inch mid, woofer 0.75 inch, silk, dome, tweeter and a really small cabinet overall, so um. First, i want to tell you kind of like just some things that just stuck out to me right away. I i'll be honest

 They will go as low as 60 hertz and as high as 20 kilohertz um. Just to note on frequency response, when we're talking about smaller speakers, a small speaker that goes down to 60 hertz and a big speaker that goes down to 60 hertz. Typically, it's not the same thing. The size really does make a big difference right

Micca MB42X Review (Bookshelf Speakers under $100 Part 1)

Kind of big, kind of ugly. Micca MB42x - $89 (sometimes $69 renewed at Amazon) - the small cheap speaker winner.

 However, I did have the speaker setting on my audio receiver set to "small."  However, when I compared them side by side to my NHT SuperZeros there was no comparison. Although I did notice similar audio qualities to my SuperZeros (both have soft dome tweeters and similarly sized tweeters, the Miccas lacked the midrange I was looking for. Especially when listening to "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, or "No Ordinary Love" by Sade

  I highly recommend these as surround sound speakers. I also believe you could build a very good surround sound system with these speakers, especially when paired with the MB42-C center channel. However, you would have to buy the optional crossover in order to make it a perfect sonic match for the MB42X speakers.  However

I purchased a pair of MB42Xs as replacement speakers in my 2.1 audio setup in my home office. They were replacing a vintage pair of NHT SuperZero speakers that I was using in another application. Based on the reviews, I was hoping for something that rivaled my SuperZeros

 They have good highs, and they are not excessively bright; they also had good midrange. However, I did not really notice the bass that people rave about. However, I did have the speaker setting on my audio receiver set to "small."  However, when I compared them side by side to my NHT SuperZeros there was no comparison

Good speakers, but they lack the construction quality and sound of NHT SuperZeros

 I was very surprised at the amount of base that these little four-inch drivers could produce. So I decided to have a look inside of them, so I grabbed my little impact gun and got to work. The magnets on these things, as you can see, are pretty big, for you know a little four inch woofer, that's a really big magnet. I'Ve seen eight inch woofers that don't even have a magnet that big and here's a look at the crossover in the back

 They sound good in the bass Department, but you don't feel the bass. You would definitely know subwoofer if you want big boomy bass with these speakers, keep in mind. You'Ll have to buy a separate ad for these figures. If you don't already have one now, there is a powered version of these, although I would not recommend that, because you were stuck with the amp fess inside and I don't know if it's a really good amp or a really bad amp

 It was just applied pretty poorly, but it's a pretty well design. Looking crossover, the build quality of these speakers is pretty good. They have a very sturdy construction, there's no gaps in the veneer or any chips or mess ups or anything like that. They are pretty sleek and smooth and very well built

 They sound great they're cheap. They look clean, I mean, there's not much to say just get them. [ Music ]. There to get the passive version is that really happening right now?

No kid is poking a hole in that tweeter. Comes with speaker grills, cloth over a honeycomb plastic mesh. Not sure what it will do for the sound, but your kid isn't going to stick their fist into the woofer.

 While they lack the midrange clarity of the Polks they are well-balanced and listenable, plus they look great with the grilles on or off. Hard-core audiophiles may be annoyed by their flaws (which I'm still hopeful will fade over time) but in our setup they sound just fine.  UPDATE: A few weeks later and the lower midrange bump I hear on close-miked male vocals continues to subside. But it's very source-dependent

 I was expecting an extended break-in period with these speakers so I wasn't overly alarmed, and the next day the hollowness had almost completely disappeared.  Over the next few weeks of daily listening I found the Miccas to be well-balanced and non-fatiguing, but with a distinct chesty resonance on closely-miked male vocals. An announcer wearing a lapel mike would almost always excite this resonance, while a male narrator of a well-produced PBS documentary would not. The placement of the Miccas near the floor and close to a corner would almost certainly have a lot to do with this, and while the effect was noticeable with careful listening it wasn't annoying (I'm a reformed audiophile who has learned not to sweat the small stuff, especially with speakers costing less than $80 a pair)

  Several more weeks later and the chestiness seems to be subsiding a little. Again, placement is probably a factor but the lack of resonance from well-recorded TV audio suggests to me that the Miccas are a bit unforgiving of bad microphone placement. This makes sense, since they've been described as desktop monitors.  I intend to update this review when I've had a chance to move the Miccas closer to ear level and audition them with music

 I wasn't expecting miracles with the Miccas but was hoping for a well-balanced sound with a decent soundstage from our basic setup. The Miccas would be placed on a low AV bench about a foot off the floor, along with the receiver and TV. It's all in a corner, not the ideal audio setup, I know, but with picture windows on either side this was the only spouse-friendly choice.  On first applying power to the Miccas I was shocked to hear a very distinct hollowness in the upper bass/lower midrange, and a nasal, congested quality that stuck out like a sore thumb

Good and slowly getting better

 Really maximizing what you can get out of this enclosure size and the driver sizes and the driver responses, so what else is it good for besides desktop use? This is when i really started thinking about it, and i came up with this. This is a backpack. These speakers can fit into the backpack. Also in the backpack

 I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out these probably go on a desk and for that application, they're pretty good um. For me, i'd like to have a subwoofer, but you can get by without a subwoofer um they're built really well. They'Ve got a really good port, like it's plastic, and it's it's almost like. Well, it's not quite it's set in really well and then the covering kind of goes around it

 What do they call it? Carbon fiber, it's carbon, fiber, uh, carbon fiber, woofer yeah, it's pretty uh, pretty stiff uh they're rated 85 db they're a little bit harder to drive than a lot of other speakers, but i have no. I had no problem driving them um really with anything. So your direction, you're directing the sound and high frequencies are very directional, so we can kind of control them um. If, for me personally, i would say these speakers a little bit on the bright side

 The good news is, is they're about tiny, so you can just kind of change them where you want them to be depending upon how bright you want them with the wave guide, you're going to have better dispersion, so you're going to have a better off axis performance. Although i will say when i stood up, i couldn't really hear the the highs very well, but it also makes sense, considering it's a tiny little speaker, so the best sound is when you're directly in front of them and they're towed in, but not towed in too Much because, then, to me that sounds a little bit bright, but again the cool thing about these is if it's too bright, go like that, not bright enough. Go like that, and i would recommend i'd recommend whatever amp you're. Putting on this thing to have tone controls, because with the size of these speakers with the way it's reported with the size of the drivers and the limitations, you're going to have you're going to want tone controls, because it's not going to be perfect

Micca MB42X Review - Have Speaker, Will Travel!

Downside - no bass. If you want to use it for HT or music, you need a subwoofer. This is not a great speaker.

 I don't like suggesting it, but a nice "break-in" does help these speakers a considerable amount. Under the same settings, the bass response has increased to its current form, coming from the stiff, midbass-only out of the box form. I do hope the tweeters brighten up, but that's highly unlikely.  Conclusion

 If you're looking for great near-field speakers, speakers to set up as surround in a small room, or a pair of stereo speakers to listen to, these speakers will please you without requiring a bit of money. For a large room, I would not recommend these. For everything else mentioned above, I do recommend these. Other speakers can easily outperform these, but for the price, I couldn't be happier

 I was able to get good balance between these and a small 10" subwoofer with a 80hz/120hz crossover setup.

I've been dying to give these speakers a try for quite a while. When I decided to build a budget-oriented PC surround setup, I jumped on the opportunity to purchase these based off the reviews. These are being powered by a Denon  I've been listening to these for a couple days now. What an interesting experience
