 The bass response, in particular, can sound slightly anemic if your amplifier is not up to the task.The RB42 image superbly well, recreating a rather deep soundstage, but that only became evident when placed on 24-28-inch loudspeaker stands and pulled 2-to-3-feet from the wall. The rear ported loudspeakers certainly benefit from some boundary reinforcement, but placed too close to the wall, the bass started to overload the corners and lost its solidity. Alternatives: As much as we love the RB42, they do face some stiff competition from the PSB Alpha P3 ($199), Paradigm Monitor SE Atom ($298), and the ELAC Debut 2

The construction quality on the RB42 would be impressive if they sold for $400, making one raise an eyebrow considering that they sell for $130. Micca may have cut corners in other places, but the curved 3/4-inch thick MDF cabinet wrapped in a laminate dark wood veneer isn’t one of them. The RB42 are solidly built loudspeakers that look great as well.      

 The Monitor SE Atom are more than double the price of the RB42, but they justify the difference based on the sense of scale and higher levels of resolution and transparency. The PSB and ELAC have a much harder time in our opinion making that same case; the PSB sound lightweight in the bass department compared to the RB42, and the ELAC can sound somewhat strident when pushed. The silk dome tweeter of the RB42 is more laid back sounding; the overall tonal balance is not as forward sounding which might appeal to listeners over the long haul.      

If you’re expecting subterranean bass response out of a pair of 4-inch paper coated midrange/woofers, you’re not getting the point of these loudspeakers. The RB42 deliver a tight, solid bass response that will impress anyone; adding a subwoofer would certainly make sense with these loudspeakers but it’s not mandatory. The silk dome tweeter sounds very smooth with above average top end extension; when driven very hard with less than stellar recordings, the RB42 never exhibited a level of brightness that we would normally associate with entry-level loudspeakers. The midrange resolution is outstanding; the absence of obvious colorations made vocal reproduction one of the best parts of its sonic signature

The Best Cheap Bookshelf Speakers That You’ve Never Heard Of

Hello friends! Extremely new to this whole world of appreciation for Audio setups. Our 5 year old Vizio 55inch TV decided to transition into a Christmas decoration with all the backlights turning on and off every few seconds, so we opt to pick up a 65inch LG C1.

The visuals are stunning and we never realize what we're missing out on, the experience with OLED is like night and day with regular LCD and I don't think we could go back. The only gripe we have is the Audio could be improve with a "Real" setup. I was reading a lot of advice from r/HTBuyingGuide and I think I have learned some stuff already but tbh it can get overwhelming with all the suggestions, brands, price ranges, bang for your buck, capacities, outputs etc. I was hoping I could go here and know about what your experiences are with certain brands and/or if there's a general consensus on what setup to get with a certain budget. I also understand that there are a lot of brands are having difficulties and shortages with stocks, so I would want to hear if you are waiting on a specific part and why.

Suggestions on a 5.1

. for music these speakers are just fine.  I also hooked these up to my home theater amp, an Outlaw 5000x.

  Now I have the bs22's in my movie room as my mains and is connected to a 5.1 Denon receiver. I turned off the sub and tested the speakers just by themselves and even close to the wall. The pioneers are bigger than the RB42, but they have less bass but just slightly better mids and highs

2, and although they sounded ok, I ended up resetting my eq and just turned the treble up by a tiny notch, since I barely have any space and I have to put these speakers almost up against the wall. Technically with a rear ported speaker, you don't want it close up against the wall, but IMO they sound more fun when they're closer so you get even more bass :D.  Now I have the bs22's in my movie room as my mains and is connected to a 5.1 Denon receiver

  For near field listening and for music, YouTube videos/tv shows and GAMING. These are awesome. You'll be scratching your head how do these little speakers output dat bass. Now it isn't subwoofer class bass, but if you play a bass heavy song and increase the volume, it almost sounds like you have a pseudo mini subwoofer

I still couldn't fathom how my rb42's running on a 20wpc mini amp was putting out more bass than the pioneers on a 75wpc 5.1 Yamaha receiver

 Despite the reviews of its jaw-dropping low-end quality these speakers produce, it's still missing lower frequencies. I didn't hear lower bass that the Logitech Z333 2.1s were making like when a vidoes showing a ground shake or things exploding, the sound didn't rumble fully as the Logitechs.  Another negative would be its uncomfortable listening experience

 Rather would make better use of that money as a month's supply of Chipotle or a Playstation 4 Pro. If you got money to spend, do it as your first entry level speakers.  Lesson learned: decent sound requires costly speakers and DAC/amp (~$100 Micca Origain AD250 DAC+amp was my first DAC and amp so I can't say anything other than it gets warm to the touch after 10 min and its volume fills a room decently at ~40%/knob turned top left 11 o'clock).

Overall, don't buy into the hype. I don't recommend these because of its $300 minimum, ESPECIALLY when they suck without a sub which would bring the cost up to $400+

Maybe go for a pair of Edifier R2000DB and see if you like them more than the Klipsch.

The problem here, however, is you're really limiting yourself with powered speakers. If you go with passive speakers, it will be much easier to upgrade in the future. Something like the Topping MX3 paired with Micca RB42 would do what you want.

I live in a super cheap house with roommates. Not my forever home, but I could be here five more years.

It’s not a big space. The TV (I got a new, 4K Samsung) sits on a heavy wooden chest of drawers, any amp would vie for space with said TV, but there’s room on either side for bookshelf speakers.

I really want a system that hooks up fine to the TV and can be remote controlled. I’ve had issues in the past with an older amp from the local hi fi spot. 

Right now I have the Klipsch R51-PM pair, $600 value but I snagged them for $330, and I can still return em. I have to use two remotes. But in a way that’s nice, I fiddle constantly with the volume, and using the Klipsch remote does not show on the TV screen.

They’re pretty good. But sometimes shrill/loud sounds are jarring (is there an audiophile term for this). I feel pretty willing to just spend $300 for now and much later, build a solid investment speaker set. Unless someone thinks there’d be an easy way to get components that I could later make part of a full array for not a whole lot more money. I’m thinking, you know, in ten years I might be in a good spot where I’d spend 2k on a sound system. For both music and movies.

Advice for a simple home setup

 I couldn't wait so I grabbed my Denon receiver from my other room, wired them all up, plugged them into my desktop, and cranked up the music.  The sound that it was producing was not to my liking at all. Compared to a older set of Presonus E3.5 I had laying around these completely failed to impress

 Then, I went back to the Micca and again, did not like the sound at all. I thought, I should throw them into my living area where the room was larger and I was sitting at least 8-10 feet back from them and boy was it a night and day difference compared to when it was in my home office. The tinny sound was completely gone and it left me fairly impressed to the point that I had left them there for several weeks.  I eventually gave them away as my original use was for near field with my desktop

 Check! Part 2 - Create a system in my office to play them on. I used an old Denon bookshelf system as the amplifier, an Amazon Echo as a Bluetooth receiver, and my PC with Kodi for playback. I used an old set of RadioShack Minimus 7 speakers connected to the Denon. All worked well and I was quite satisfied with my office setup

 Playing my old collection of CDs ripped to my homemade NAS through Kodi on my Fire TV. Sounds great! The Miccas seem to be the right choice. Next is to connect the old Polk sub! That's my next project.

 Unhook the Toshiba Soundbar. Speakers! That's where the Micca RB42s came into play. As you may have figured by now, I didn't want to spend a ton of money. Hooked up the Miccas and voila! I am now a happy camper

Better than I expected!

 I wasn't too impressed with the sound I got from them without a preamp. Other speakers sound very nice with this amp though. Then I plugged them into a Pioneer stereo integrated amplifier and they sound absolutely beautiful--very full and smooth sounding from the lows to the highs. For me they are perfect at an unobtrusive volume level in my living room

 I suppose one could add a SW to get the pounding feel in the chest and annoy the neighbors. I certainly don't need it or prefer it. I have a pair of ported Sony speakers I think I paid about the same price for--these sound way better to me than those Sony speakers on the same integrated amplifier.

 They are quite inefficient so you have to put some power to them to get adequate sound from them. And with 4" woofers, you're not going to get a lot of air movement. I also have tried these on a couple different amps. One was a straight power amplifier (Fosi Audio HD-A1) that puts out a real nice warm sound at 50 watts per channel

Preface: I'm not a person who enjoys my music real loud and I don't need the bass to kick me in the gut. If that's you, these aren't good speakers for you. They are quite inefficient so you have to put some power to them to get adequate sound from them. And with 4" woofers, you're not going to get a lot of air movement

Not bad little speakers

 (Along with finding a suitable subwoofer, either getting a better one for my home theater and using the old one with my PC or just scrounging one up online that wasn't completely terrible).  Let me tell you, I LOVE THESE TINY SPEAKERS! I was simply amazed at how much sound came out of such a tiny package! And make no mistake, QUALITY sound, at that! And while I do still plan on using a subwoofer, I was surprised at how much bass these little boxes produce! While they might not shake the walls, they still have some respectable (for their size) punch and rumble to them. So, I am comfortable saying that I will definitely not be having any trouble integrating whatever subwoofer I end up using with these speakers. I was afraid that I would have to make the sub crossover frequency go higher in order to fill in an audio "hole" which would make the sub more noticable

 In fact, my initial plan was to use them as a step up from the speakers I am currently using for my PC. You see, I have an older Logitch 5.1 speaker system and while it is pretty good (I like having better sound quality, mostly for gaming, but I also listen to quite a bit of music, watch videos, and even watch the occasional movie or TV show) the system (the speakers all plug into the little subwoofer) is beginning to show it's age and has started to occasionally short out (no sound comes out due to some faulty wiring and the amplifier gets warm and shuts the whole system down). So, I ordered the Micca RB42s just to see how they sounded before I took the plunge and bought another pair (for the surround speakers) along with the center channel version of the RB42 (the RB42-C)

  Now, I haven't pulled off the back to take a look-see at the components/circuits used in the crossover, but the sound alone confirms that what I saw in the pictures is certainly at least close to what's inside. I'm still going to take a look at what's insides of these little beasties (I just can't help myself!), but I'm certain that I won't be disappointed. It just goes to show you what using quality components can do for the resulting sound.  Speaking of quality, I have to mention that the cabinets are very solid (knocking on them sounds like knocking on a solid block of wood and not a hollow box) and the dark wood venere finish is very subdued without being overstated or "Look at me! Look at me! I'm a speaker over here!" flashy
