I would recommend a Miele C3 canister style vacuum. I have a more basic one, without the power head and it's great for hardwood, tile and low-pile carpet.

While I find the hose setup fine for quick pickups, this vacuum's not my first choice for above floor cleaning. In regards to the lower carry handle, I don't find myself messing with it while I'm vacuuming but I do like it if I'm taking the Felix down the stairs.
