 Sean Sewell in Gearmint.com here and this is the brand new Mountain Hardwear Super DS Stretch Down Jacket, this guy right here. Now we've done reviews on most of the previous versions of all their Down Stretch Jackets from Mountain Hardwear. This one's brand new for 2020, it is the end of February 2020 as I do this video review and we saw this at Outdoor Retailer, got our hands on it, we're really intrigued with it for a lot of reasons so let's get into it

 So that stretch is very nice and again this is extra large on me, 6 foot 1, 36, 37 on the arms, 45 inch chest, 33 inch waist and it fits fantastic. MSRP is $275 for this jacket and also it's made from eco-friendly materials, I should have mentioned that.  So it does have good coverage, load that so the microphone doesn't get blocked, but there's no way to adjust it. So it's a good coverage, it's a good fit especially over a hat you can see there, got elastic which is very helpful but there's no toggles here, there's no toggle in the back. So that could be a deal breaker for you if you need to really cinch down the hood in inclement weather. Now as you can see it fit very well over my size medium head with this hat on

6 with 55% humidity and this is totally fine for me. Now when it gets down into the single digits and even teens I do put on a mid-layer, you know like a 200 weight merino or something underneath this and it still fits totally fine.  A lot of puffy jackets I see have stiff fabric bodies, so they need to be a little oversized to not be constricting when you move your shoulders and arms. But this fabric moves with you and fits great. I am wearing a small and I usually want to size up to a medium for more room to move. But because it is so stretchy, the small fits great and is probably going to keep me a little warmer than the medium

 So even if it gets wet, the down in here will repel water similar to synthetic fill while being able to trap in body heat because they stay lofty. The fill here is responsible down standard or RDS certified and that is always something to look for when researching down products. You have got two hand warmer pockets, a chest pocket and two drop in pockets on the inside for a hat or gloves. The collar is nice and high to protect your neck and the stretchy cuffs seal out cold drafts along with a cinch at the hem

It's a nice jacket. I liked the fabric and weight, but had to return it because of the fit. Too large in the shoulders and tight in the hips.

Poor fit

 I don't know what the issue is there. It's not a helmet compatible hood, so they're not trying to gain any extra space inside of the jacket to fit an Alpine helmet or anything like that. It's not that big of a hood, but for some reason, the face doesn't cinch down. On the bright side, you get that more technical fit

 One thing I do want to talk about though is the hood. On the Stretch Down RS, Mountain Hardware used a scuba style hood that didn't have any draw cords. They used elastic around the edge of the face to seal everything in here. The Stretch Down DS, I want to show you how the hood doesn't exactly cinch down, how the collar is not really up to snuff when it comes to keeping your face warm, keeping your chin warm

 Let's talk about a couple of the features real quick. Two pockets for keeping your hands warm. Zippers move smoothly. Also a Napoleon pocket up here for keeping essentials warm

 It's not that big of a hood, but for some reason, the face doesn't cinch down. On the bright side, you get that more technical fit. You can see the differential baffling all over the jacket. 800-Fill Nickwax waterproof down replaces the 750-Fill Q-Shield that Mountain Outwear used in the RS and the regular Stretch Down

Seems fine but not my favorite

Love the style, size is perfect however it’s losing a lot of down and I find there’s not much in the arms

Fair deal

 I have not had any issues with that. It may bore more of a preference but I don’t mind if the jacket sits slightly above the belt line with my arms raised in the air. The stretchy fabric allows for great mobility and a comfortably snug fit. Zero feathers poking out at this point and I have worn it almost every day

Initial impression

  I do like the fit better on the older ones because they seem to fit my shape better.  The newer jackets seem to be more of a straight fit.  If there were one thing I would like to see with these jackets, it would be side zips at the waist so the jacket would fit around items on my belt.  I still would highly recommend these jackets
