Speakers are about as good as it gets for that price. But I would go with a pair of Neumi BS5 passive speakers and a SMSL SA300 amplifier. That would be about $250 with cables. Its a passive system so you can upgrade/expand as you wish and its a bit better sounding.

Front ports are problematic in the sense that any port noise or port resonance is fired straight at you rather than reflected off the wall, which is a worse problem to have than having a rear port near a wall (which isn't really a big deal as you might imagine).
