I’ve got them in my kitchen, made the conscious choice to go with powered speakers. They are great, especially for their price point.

Edifier is a very solid brand for SQ on a budget.  A friend had these exact pair, though I never got to hear them.  The phono pre on them died after a bit, so I'm not sure if that's something to be weary of.

But others are right that separates on a cheap amp will likely be a better long-term move for sequential upgrading.

If you're new to Edifier and are leaning toward buying them, check out their website. They often have sales during major holidays. Their refurbished section has some pretty great steals. I was brand new and bought a pair that way. Very happy with my current setup! There's some R2000's there for $200 refurbished. Note, they have base on the back of the speaker as opposed to the front I think.

I have the exact same speakers and will buy them again. Perfect for my small home office while I’m working. I recommend checking Edifier refurbs (they have their own store on Amazon) which saved me $40, YMMV. Caveat, I wish I had skipped BT in order to get the model with sub outs.

These are good for listening in a small room at a moderate volume level. Also great for upgraded computer speakers. They are somewhat flat and the mids are just ok. Nice soundstage though. If you are trying to rock the house, look elsewhere.

Any opinions on these active bookshelf speakers and if pairing with a subwoofer would be a good choice? I have no experience with good audio equipment and budget is $230. Any help is appreciated.

  That said, the worst of the faults of this speaker can be improved with EQ and you end up with a remarkably good sounding, very detailed and clear, with absolutely incredible soundstage and imaging.  If you want to go the extra mile toward improving the audio from this, search for rubber or silicon lab stoppers to seal these ports. I think a size 7 stopper is proper. Please see the review from Erin's Audio Corner to explain the impact of this choice

What is the best 5.1 HT Speaker system with AV receiver that costs 1000-1700$

 This speaker is not particularly detailed when compared to my more detailed speakers (like my mini Norh 9 with Dennis Murphy crossover and Scanspeak Revelators, or Martin Logan Monoliths 3), but is comparable to the Dayton Audio MK 402X. It is good for TV viewing with Youtube source; more detailed speakers sound terrible with Youtube source. It is worth the price and is a good toy for a cheapskate audiophile. It beats Dayton Audio B452 air because the B452's have inadequate crossover

I’m a little constrained for space. I’m looking for a speaker that is not too deep that can go flush against a wall. I assume that rules out rear-ported speakers?

Good passive speakers &lt;$200USD that can go flush against the wall?

 Used in my small home office with CD player and turntable. Great sound clarity at both low and high volumes.  A few notes, tips: -Bass is a little thin as expected of bookshelfs so I paired with one of the thin Monoprice subwoofers to round out the bottom end. -These are 6ohm speakers so you'll need a little more power than typical to drive them

Which Sony HT will go best with X90J ?

 They absolutely did not work as rear speakers because the contrast between them and the main/center speakers was incredibly distracting.  I wound up using them up front to compliment the Advents as my mains, while using the CR6's as my rear speakers. The CR6's are so much more rich and clear than the Neumi's; it's night and day. The Neumi's do fill out the sound of my front speakers and stereo setup nicely, but they still don't sound quite right paired with the Advents, so I am planning on sending them back

Just get something else

I would get Neumi BS5 speakers($110), Yamaha R-S202($130) amplifier and the same Dayton SUB-1200 subwoofer.

I recently realized that my TV speakers just aren't cutting it and am hoping to expand into the realm of discrete speakers. I've been doing research nonstop the last few days and have come to the conclusion that  I am looking to upgrade to a 2.1 system for my living room (about 14' x 12', or about 4.3m x 3.7m). I have a setup in mind but know there is someone who knows much more about this and figured I would ask in the case there is a better solution I am not seeing.        
          
Just some context - I had somewhat of a headphone audiophile phase a few years ago so I'm decently versed as far as amps/DACs are concerned.           
             
I am looking to keep this under 500 USD (but am flexible if it's really worth it). I like the idea of getting a receiver/amp for future flexibility but it seems COVID has jacked up prices and many budget options are out of stock or priced much higher, so I am unsure of the feasibility at this budget. The ones I found in stock seem to have reliability concerns.            
           
At the moment, I am eyeing the Edifier R1700BTs and Dayton SUB-1200 which would run me just under 400 USD. Again, I know that having a receiver/amp gives me more flexibility in the future, but currently my thought process is I can get all that stuff down the line and use the speakers with my PC when I have the capacity (in my current place, PC and TV are next to each other)              
             
My use case is games, movies, TV, music. Primarily they will be hooked up to my TV but I like the idea of Bluetooth to connect my phone as well. That said, I am not too particular and so long as there is some way to connect my phone (aux, usb, etc) Bluetooth isn't a hard requirement. I do not need anything that will get too loud as I have neighbors and really am just looking for an upgrade over TV sound. I am into hip hop and would like to get more immersion during games so I don't think just a pair of bookshelves will do.         
          
Location is contiguous USA. I appreciate any and all help!

Looking for advice moving from TV speakers to 2.1 system

These were purchased as a replacement for a pair of Polk T15 speakers. Much credit goes to a professional product reviewer found on the web. Search for Erin's Audio Corner; perhaps the best product reviewer I've encountered. Do him a small favor; use the link to Amazon imbedded on his site to purchase these

 They fit these Neumi's perfectly and most important of all they DO IMPACT SOUND QUALITY in a worthwhile positive manner. They are visible in my included photos.

 Search for Erin's Audio Corner; perhaps the best product reviewer I've encountered. Do him a small favor; use the link to Amazon imbedded on his site to purchase these. He helped me make an advised choice that I could not be happier with.  The clarity of the Neumi BS5 is absolutely amazing even at volume

 Furthermore, the bass produced by these relatively small units will have you and your fellow listeners scratching your heads; It's OUTSTANDING! The enclosures are nicely manufactured with a clean finish. The magnetic grilles are a great plus.  One more item of note: I always wanted to try some sort of sound isolation just out of curiosity. There are MANY options here on Amazon and choosing the 'right' units is time consuming to say the least
