I was about to take it apart myself to see what’s going on, but before I did I thought I’d test out the 28-300mm lens as well (it was also in rice for a week). I swapped it into my D300, and as soon as I did, THE D300 JUST DIED TOO!. Now I’m staring here at $1200 of camera equipment, and it’s seemingly all useless. The lens seems to kill any camera it comes in contact with, and both my D300 and D700 show NO SIGNS OF LIFE.

I'm running strong on my trusty Nikon D100 and love it to death. I got the itch to upgrade lately though and I'm debating between a friend's D200 for $50-70 or a bargain-grade D300 from KEH/MPB in the $125-165 range. The D300 was the start of the 51-point AF system that became a workhorse in subsequent models. Plus it had live-view. The D200 was a workhorse in it's own time, and a lot of people like the way CCD sensor colours look. But while both are pretty old by today's standards, the D300 is definately more modern.
