For minimalists and true ounce-counters, our favorite ultralight headlamp of 2022 is the Nitecore NU25. At just a hair under 1 ounce for the lamp itself (more on the strap below), the Nitecore is surprisingly bright with a 360-lumen max output and rechargeable via micro USB. We’ve also found it incredibly easy to operate (this is a common complaint among headlamp users), with one button for the white beam and one for red. All told, as a high-powered emergency light or for those who want to carry the least possible weight on their back, the NU25 is a bright and relatively cheap option.

Keep in mind that the Nitecore NU25 has four brightness settings: 360, 190, 38, and 1 lumen, respectively. There’s no dimmer, which is a bummer, but certainly something we can get used to. In terms of the strap, the included Nitecore option adds nearly an ounce to the equation at 1.9 ounces total, which is slightly heavier than the BioLite 200 mentioned above. But the Nitecore is the better performer, running for 5 hours on high (190 lumens) compared to the BioLite’s 3 hours at 200 lumens. And for true minimalists and thru-hikers, Litesmith makes a shoestring-style headband for the NU25 that clocks in at just .18 ounces (you can also DIY with a piece of shockcord), bringing the whole setup to 1.17 ounces total. Excellent headlamp

 Now, if it blinks once, you may want to consider charging it because that means it's under ten percent battery life. I Think this is a great way of a battery indicator. I Do wish the headlamp would blink at you when it starts getting below me maybe 10 15 percent. but they still do a great job at this little indicator for the power

 and if you're looking at the stock one, this weighs 24 grams just by itself. So you can see the weight savings by just putting the shock cord on here. And like I said, this is actually more comfortable for the weight of the headlamp. I Actually like this better than the stock band

 And what? this is telling me Since it's blinking three times, that means it's telling me that it's over fifty percent charge. If it blinked at me twice, it would tell me that the headlamp is under fifty percent. Now, if it blinks once, you may want to consider charging it because that means it's under ten percent battery life. I Think this is a great way of a battery indicator

 Now for those of you in the ultralight community that love the Petzl elight, this is probably your next logical progression because for pretty much the same exact weight you have all those extra lumens and all those extra modes. You can still do the ultra light headband on it and it's really, really comfortable. You have to try it for yourself if you don't believe me. but trust me, this headlamp and band is really comfortable

 All they do here is they just run it through this back bracket plate and you can see that a little better. and they just kind of tie it off with some shock cord and make a little headband out of it and it's really, really comfortable. It's actually way more comfortable than I thought it was ever going to be. so like I said I Highly recommend not using the original strap and just going with some shock cord like this

After going through a half dozen cheap Amazon headlamps, I'm looking to spend a bit of money on a good-quality headlamp for camping and general-purpose use. 

My criteria:

* Long battery life 
* Rechargeable via USB (prefer 18650 batteries as I already have a bunch from other equipment)
* Multiple modes (flood, red light) 
* Comfy, not too bulky
* Reliable, easy to use

I've looked at Zebralight, Fenix, Nitecore, and I'm leaning towards the Nitecore HC65. I would have already bought a Fenix HM65R-T if it had a red light. I know it goes down to 5 LM flood, but I feel like even that is too bright and would bother other people at camp/attract bugs. 

Anyone here have a favorite headlamp with a similar use case?

Headlamp Recommendations?

Good Features - One Major Exception

Depending on the options you pick of the above let's approximate $500. From this you get a light, warm, quality sleep system, a heavy but dependable tent, and a quality but medium weight pack. You don't want to cheap out on your sleep system as doing so can put you in a situation ranging from mildly uncomfortable to dangerous; plus the last thing you want to do after a long day is shiver all night. 

New guy here looking to get involved with UL backpacking. I haven't actually purchased anything yet, but have been reading the sidebar and other sources for "beginner" backpacking gear lists and various "10 lbs for under $500" type lists. I've put a list of items I'll need together in Lighterpack, but thought it would be a good idea to get some input before purchasing. I really appreciate all the help and time! Flexible to make any changes before purchasing based on what you guys think. Any advice would be appreciated.

\- Should I look for a higher quality tent than the $50 River Country tent on Amazon, or would it be fine to start with?

\- Would a framed or frameless pack fit my needs best?

\- side sleeper so I'd imagine a sleeping pad would be more comfortable than a mat, but open to a mat if not a severe difference in comfort. Definitely open to opinions.

Beginner overwhelmed and looking for a first ever shakedown

Good backpacking headlamp

With a zero degree quilt (probably overkill), you probably don't need your thermals and sleep shirt. Bring what you need to, to feel comfortable, though.

Now I am returning after a long while to backpacking and camping, and this is my first time being mindful of the weight I am carrying, Tomorrow a few friends and I will go to Dolly Sods for 3 days. The weather report is wet with extra rain, and sods being sods I expect a lot of mud (which is all fine and dandy) but this is really throwing a spanner on my UL planning skills.

Feel free to say the ugly truth, I know there are plenty of ways of making this far lighter (looking at you rain jacket). But I could really use some feedback on how to slowly lighten my way for future hikes.

**Location/temp range/specific trip description:** Dolly Sods, 50-70F

**Goal Baseweight (BPW):** Under 20

**Budget:** Open

**Non-negotiable Items:**
