I see so many videos/tutorials and people in general using these spinners called distribution tools to level the coffee before tamping and at the same time many people here saying it's utterly useless and can cause more harm than good? 
Is that really true? Do I just have to purchase a self-levelling tamper and tamp after the WDT? This is what brings the most consistency?

And In case I decide the purchase a classic manual tamper is the distribution tool still useless?
Does anyone just do WDT + Classic Tamper and finds it perfect sufficient?

For those who own a DF64, what number are you generally set at? I just received mine today, and I started around 17 down to about 10. It seems no matter what I do, when I start my espresso machine (Gaggia classic pro purchased a month ago) it seems to start gushing out with spurting all over. 

I've done the OPV mod and the grinder I was using before this is a Baratza 270 which gave me about 38g out from a 19g puck in about 30 seconds. Doesn't really matter how far off I was with the 270, I never got spurting like this (I did at times get super fast pulls if it wasn't set right).

Any ideas what could be causing this?

DF64 owners... Whats your setting?

 It's a bit wobbly, with some play in the connections such that it's very difficult to get a perfectly level tamp. The spring feature works ok, but I think pressure is far secondary to having a level puck. Don't think I'll be using this much and sorry I ordered it. It's cheap, and cheap is what you get

Works, but...

Missing springs

 It doesn't appear to interfere with the tamping process.  This tamper is a great value, and I highly recommend it!

I love this tamper! It appears to do the same job as the premium tampers that are over 4 times as expensive. It feels very solid, and is well packaged for shipping. I use it with IMS BaristaPro baskets, and it fits them perfectly. It has enough travel to tamp correctly even on an underfilled basket

Great price for a calibrated leveling tamper!

The inner spring provides a measure of "calibration" if you tamp until the spring bottoms out. One problem is that the spring bottoms out at different lengths depending on the gap from the basket lip to the compressed puck, so the "calibrated" tamping force is affected by your basket size and dose. The more you dose in the same basket, the more force the spring would impart on your puck. However, this error is mitigated somewhat by the relatively large spring travel
