 I will say that if you want the fastest possible GPU, this is it. Hands down, and buy a big margin, which was exciting to see. If it's a good value remains to be seen, and I think we need AMD to weigh in with the performance and prices for their Radeon 7000 series GPUs next month before we can make the final call on that. But hopefully now you guys have a much better idea of how the RTX 4090 stacks up, and based on some early price leaks, I am optimistic that third-party cards won't immediately push pricing up to $2,000 or more right away too

NVIDIA is tricky! RTX 4090 Review & Benchmarks

Given that we saw signs of CPU bottlenecks in our tests, it&rsquo;s possible that the RTX 4090 could pull more power than is shown here. As mentioned above, the card itself is rated to pull 450 watts and could easily pull far more than that. But for the tests we performed, that simply did not happen.

One of the few games in which the RTX 4090 didn&rsquo;t set well above the rest of the competition was in Bioshock: Infinite. Here, the GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 in general fared better. Things weren&rsquo;t much better in Hitman: Absolution, where a bottleneck clearly occurred, but the RTX 4090 did manage to run this game at 1440p just as smoothly as it did at 1080p. It was tops at 4K in all three games here, but not by a commanding margin

Full-system power consumption with the RTX 4090 installed peaked at 485 watts in our measures with our Kill-A-Watt meter, which is equal to what we measured with the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and well below the GeForce RTX 3090 or RTX 3080. Power consumption didn&rsquo;t reach as low as the competing AMD cards, but given the performance numbers above, this indicates a far greater performance-per-watt ratio for the RTX 4090 than anything else in the list except for (maybe) the much more energy-efficient Radeon RX 6600.

9 FPS in Cyberpunk's in-game minute-long benchmark. With DLSS enabled, but frame generation turned off, the score jumped up to 84 FPS. With frame generation on, an incredible 136 FPS, while still, as you can see, looking absolutely magnificent. Now, frame generation does come with a slight trade-off, which is that since the GPU is generating additional frames, it introduces a tiny bit of latency as it inserts those frames into the stream

 Considering those numbers, a price premium of 45% over the former king doesn't seem so bad. The RTX 4090 may be huge and expensive, but holy smokes if it doesn't blow the competition out of the water. That is a little unfair because it's currently the only card of this new generation that's available, so we only have cards from the past few years to compare it to. But until the rest of the pack can catch up, even the $1,599 price doesn't seem unreasonable for the unrivaled frame rates that this card can crank out between its impressive hardware specs and its DLSS3 AI wizardry

 It has a base clock of 2.23GHz that boosts up to 2.52GHz and 24GB of GDDR6 VRAM, making it capable of 83 shader teraflops of compute power, up from 40 on the 3090 Ti, 1,321 tensor teraflops, up from 320, and 191 ray tracing teraflops, up from 78. Those are all huge jumps, however, as we've seen many times before, simply doubling the core or shader counts doesn't automatically mean that you'll see double the performance in games

 With frame generation on, an incredible 136 FPS, while still, as you can see, looking absolutely magnificent. Now, frame generation does come with a slight trade-off, which is that since the GPU is generating additional frames, it introduces a tiny bit of latency as it inserts those frames into the stream. This latency was imperceptible to me in the bit of Cyberpunk that I played with frame generation turned on, but that might not be the case in other games, and it might be more problematic in fast-twitch esports games where every millisecond counts. Still, playing a game as visually demanding as Cyberpunk at 4K, with ray tracing, at frame rates in excess of 120, is truly impressive

0 since May. Nvidia is clearly trying to save a buck. Again, on a GPU that costs as much as a Series X, a PS5, a Switch, and a Steam Deck combined. Or maybe these cards were just ready and waiting in a warehouse for longer than we realized

 It's still really good though. That's over 60 FPS most of the time in native 4K. We're also looking at minimum frame rates beyond 120 at 4K in Forza Horizon 5 compared to sub 90 on the 3090 Ti. And it is incredibly stable

 Moore's law is dead, they say. And yet, the competition doesn't seem to think so. While it's true that nobody can touch the 4090's mammoth performance right now, as we saw with the RTX 3090, that won't last forever. And that's where things get weird

 It's incredibly amusing to me that the first GPU that might actually be capable of running 8K gaming without asterisks is being handled in such a lackadaisical fashion by Team Green. The days of generational performance per dollar gains are over, they say. Moore's law is dead, they say. And yet, the competition doesn't seem to think so

Is the fastest GPU ALWAYS the best? RTX 4090 Review

 It's the RTX 4090 from Zotac. That's right friends, love gaming, power the win, here we go. This GPU starts at 1600 US dollars, which means all the cool features and performance you're about to hear about can be yours. Five to six years from now, once the price drops to a more worldly level

Now what's really interesting to me, looking at a card this size, it has a whopping three, what appear to be 110 millimeter fans, but the actual length of the PCB is only up to here, which means that this solid ass hunk of aluminum fins all down the back, which also has a pass through. So you can see this fan right here is just blowing straight through the cooler is all needed to cool this thing. Good gravy

 This time, though, the 4090 is the first to arrive, meaning I only have the previous generation as a point of comparison. And while we know how the 4080 will be priced – $1,199 for the 16GB variant, $899 for the 12GB variant – it’s impossible to know how those cards will perform until we’ve had a chance to test them ourselves.

 It works in tandem with Nvidia Reflex, removing any latency that might make the game feel sluggish. Nvidia’s figures claim that DLSS 3 has the potential to deliver up to 4x the fps when it’s turned on.  

 On its own, DLSS 3 could potentially look 120 fps while feeling like 60. But fear not: Nvidia Reflex compensates for this latency and then some. In fact, the added latency was imperceptible to me in the bit of Cyberpunk I played with frame generation turned on. But that might not be the case in other games, and it might be more problematic in fast-twitch esports games where every millisecond counts

Still, comparing to everything else you can buy right now, including the 3090 Ti, its numbers are impressive, and that card only just launched earlier this year with a retail price of $2,000, though it has since seen its price drop to as low as $1,100 on sale. I said before that the 4090 holds a lead of at least 15 and up to 90 percent over the 3090 Ti at 4K. Considering those numbers, a price premium of 45% over the former king doesn’t seem so bad.
