My boyfriend and I are planning a 2-4 month trip to Central and South America (Costa Rica, Chile, Peru) at the start of next year. We're located in Europe, but I'm willing to hunt down backpack suitable for me. I'm short 161cm (5'2 or so) and quite small all around and I've yet to find a bag that doesn't hurt me. In June I did a 20-day hike with a hiking backpack from Decathlon that was supposed to be for women under 170cm, however the waist belt was doing virtually nothing so it ended up bruising my shoulders and upper back and causing me tond of pain daily. So now I'm looking for a bag around 40L that will hopefully fit me nicely, doesn't look too flashy, isn't pink, and will be good for traveling with planes and buses, walking in cities and some hiking too. I'll also bring a camera with 2 lenses, so if there's a camera compartment that'll be great, if not I'll look for designated cubes.

Sorry for all the explanations, any recommendations will be highly appreciated!

  I ended up returning both, since a 19" size would have been my preference due to airline restrictions.  If I were to keep one, I would have kept the S/M due to the shoulder strap placement making the pack ride more comfortably. I am 5'2" and according to the Osprey fitting chart with my torso length either size would work.

  There was also another difference in the shoulder straps, the XS/S had specialized Osprey clips to attach something else, while the S/M had elastic sewn across that could be used to attach something to it. Osprey changed systems so the older model has clips and the newer ones have the elastic.  I ended up returning both, since a 19" size would have been my preference due to airline restrictions.  The problem is, both packs were 21"! The only difference was the shoulder straps on the XS/S were sewn lower, so the space between the belt and the top of the shoulder straps was shorter. This made the pack sit higher up than normal on the XS/S. If I had a hair clip holding my hair up, the back of the XS/S pack forced my head forward. It just wasn't balanced, either, when compared to the S/M with the straps sewn in the usual spot

 As others have noted, the laptop in the front creates a real problem. For reference, I was able to fit the same amount of stuff into my son's Topo rover bag-which is only 20L and it felt much lighter because the laptop was in the back. For someone taller and heavier this might not be an issue.
