I like this jacket a lot, it's warm and so versatile. I wear it hiking and around town. I got the dark blue and it's so easy to wear with ANYthing. 5'5", 135lbs

Warm and cozy, water repellent when drizzly

 When we learned that we could get a hold of the materials and use the manufacturing techniques that go into the Super Strand LT styles, we jumped at the opportunity because we knew there was tons and tons of potential to build a very cool, extremely light, extremely soft, comfortable jacket, something that was truly new in terms of how warm, how light, how comfortable it would be. The story with these is that they use a very particular and effective mix of a new insulation that we're calling Vertical X Super Strand insulation. The other thing is an extremely light nylon shell fabric. It's a 12 denier shell fabric, extremely, extremely light

 They're almost like down. So if you can imagine a feather boa or a string with down clusters kind of connected to it, that is what is arrayed all throughout these pattern pieces and all throughout the jacket. It's different from traditional synthetic insulations, which come in sheet form. So sheet form insulations are going to be warm, but they're going to be a bit stiffer, a bit like more substance

 It can get damp. It can breathe. You can sweat. And it's not going to, it's not going to delude or degrade the performance of the insulation

 They're usually straight and there's usually a lot of quilting. This construction uses way less. Those three things together create this jacket that is so light, is so warm and so supple. So if you were to look at these strands and kind of to understand like how is a strand going to keep me warm, these strands have these like super insulating kind of clusters along them

Versatile Lightweight Jacket

 Wind just kicked up. So this is a 12 denier ripstop Mylon and I don't feel that wind. I can hear it and I hope you don't hear too much of the microphone, but it is windproof and it is a slightly, it has a DWR, so it's not a rain jacket by any means I'm stretching imagination, but it is water resistant. It is windproof and it is warm, lightweight

 On paper they claim the Vertical X is as warm and packable and as efficient as a 700-800 filled down. That's a big, big claim. So after they sent this to me, I went out and I tested it against two other 800 fill down jackets. I won't mention those names

Amazing jacket!

As someone who always runs cold, I was pleasantly surprised by this jacket's warmth to weight ratio and weather resistance. The jacket compresses to almost half the size of my down sweater and keeps me just as warm so I can see that this is going to become a favorite four season layer within my pack.

 As I covered above, the VerticalX SuperStrand insulation is designed to mimic the warmth and compressibility of down, and it does a great job at impersonating down’s lofty and lightweight feel. That said, the Nano Puff’s shell is slicker and less soft than the SuperStrand’s, and it will cost you $30 more for the hooded version. In the end, both designs have a very lightweight and down jacket-like feel, but we give the slight edge to the cheaper and more comfortable SuperStrand LT.  Outside of Patagonia’s collection, The North Face’s ThermoBall Eco Hoodie is their take on a down-mimicking synthetic jacket

 Weather Protection Synthetic insulation is inherently more resistant to moisture than down—it doesn’t clump up and will continue insulating when wet. That said, apart from its synthetic fill, the OR SuperStrand LT offers little in the way of wet-weather assurance. You do get a standard durable water repellent (DWR) coating for fending off light moisture, but I found it was quick to wet out even in moderate rainfall. Once the shell soaked through, it rapidly began to penetrate the insulation, resulting in a noticeably sticky and clammy-feeling interior

 At $220 and 10.5 ounces, it’s similar in both price and weight to the SuperStrand LT but with thicker insulation (80g PrimaLoft Silver Hi-Loft Ultra) for a slight boost in warmth. However, its shell is more delicate at 10 x 10 denier, and the full nylon exterior is a similarly poor performer for high-output activities like hiking and backpacking in warmer conditions. You do get harness compatibility and a hem adjustment with the Ghost Shadow, but those aren’t deal-breakers for most
