The Peavey Fury is 100% what your asking for. American made and sounds amazing for the money.

Peavey Fury or Foundation (These are USA made basses, late 1980s to mid 1990s that are still criminally underrated and can be had in the $150-300 range). 1990s Fender Made In Mexico Bases can again often be found in the $300 range. 2010 Squire's are often great, but do your homework as there are big differences in quality across the squire range. Yamaha or Ibanez basses are often great quality and can be found for cheap as they just don't have much collector value.

I regret selling my first bass (a Peavey fury neck on a p bass body I got used at a pawn shop super cheap). I sold it because it was super heavy and had horrible neck dive, but it sounded absolutely amazing and the neck profile was fantastic. I played it in high school, but at the time I was in love with the upright bass (which I just can't afford now especially since I don't play live music anymore) and I didn't love the fretted bass guitar nearly as much. I plan on getting a fretless at some point, but it still doesn't compare with an upright.

I have an epiphone thunderbird vintage pro that I think is excellent for the money. GL Tributes I think are better than MIM fenders, i have a LB100 and Kiloton. For used stuff cant beat a peavey fury usa or patriot usa, although people are asking more for them now in general you can still find them sometimes in the $200 range.
