 Manufactured between 1961 and 1981, the Rickenbacker 4001 was created as the deluxe version of Rickenbacker's 4000 bass. The 4001 has two pickups with knobs that control volume and tone for each, providing deeper tonal possibilities. The body has a crested wave shape and the fretboard has signature triangle inlays. The Rickenbacker 4001 model has been played by great bassists like Geddy Lee, Lemmy, and Kim Gordon, and remains a staple in the bass world today

I think the Geddy Lee Jazz bass is in that price range, and is one of my favorites, but the dream is a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003.

My dad has terminal prostate cancer and doesn’t have a very long time left with us. He’s recently expressed that he wants to buy both my wife and myself each something, nice and/or expensive, something we couldn’t justify spending on ourselves. Basically wants some memento for us to remember him by. 

Flashback for context:

My Dad being a high school football coach, had always loved coaching me and my sisters in our kids sports leagues, we’d definitely have a leg up over the other Dad’s who weren’t full time coaches. Sports were always a big part of our lives.

During my sophomore year I told him that I wanted to stop playing sports and focus on my band. He didn’t express any disappointment, simply said, he better hear me practicing on a regular basis then. Sitting around doing nothing wasn’t an option, rightfully so.

Some of my best memories are him coming to shows at shitty, dirty venues, where he’s the oldest person there by at least 25 years. He came to as many as he could, same as if I was playing basketball like my sisters. He was always present and showed his support even if he didn’t understand what the hell we were screaming about.

My first thought was a nice suit, or jewelry but that can be outgrown or fall out of style. In trying to think of something timeless, that I can cherish forever and not wear out, I settled on a guitar or bass.

My point:

If you were to be in my shoes, is there and instrument that would mean something for years to come to you? I do have my short list already, but would love to hear from this community for additional ideas or inspiration to consider. 

I’m trying to keep it around 1000 at the very most expensive. I own and play an epiphone explorers bass, (which dad surprised me with Xmas eve when I was 14,) also played a fender jazz for a long time but eventually sold.

Any input welcome, thanks ya’ll!

Last bass from my Dad

 It's really nice and lightweight. The original machines have been replaced by shallower, higher gear ratio sealed gear machines. All good here. It's definitely a player

 Crushed pearl. Crushed pearl inlays that go all the way across the fingerboard and, of course, this really bitchin' checkerboard binding. I love the checkerboard binding. So cool

 That's the neck pickup wide open, really round, really smooth. It's got that really just deep, deep bottom end going on. This is both pickups in the middle all the way, wide open, tone all the way open. Kind of piano string sounding, but just this huge round bottom end

I have a J and a P bass what is my third bass?

 Front pickup. Just how clean this thing sounds. It's still got that rick sound. Still got that rick sound

 Alright then. Now the greatest thing about my bass. You're about to hear it right now. You hear that? Pick your Rickenbacker up and see if it sounds like this

 Alright so then you have this switch here. You see that? That's for the rear pickup, front pickup, and both of the pickups. Alright and then if you look on the back of it you see a standard and Rick and Bakker. I call it a Rick on

 Okay now the greatest thing about a Rickenbacker is you can tone it. You know what I'm saying? But what do you mean by tone it? Well you know you got two different separate tone configurations here so you can actually blend in. Alright so I'm gonna take the rear pickup and blend a little treble to the rear pickup and it's gonna you can hear the difference. Look

We're going through the Ampeg SVT rig, all the EQs at noon, unfortunately no reverb. Let's start up on the neck pickup here, we've got the old pick out, let's see what this thing sounds like here

 We've done some other Rick basses before, we've done some earlier 70s ones, a couple differences between the early 70s and the late 70s. These ones no longer will have the checkerboard binding, up to the early part of 73 they still have that 60s checkerboard going around there. Also this has got the high gain pickups, as opposed to the toasters, we're in that era of Rickenbackers. High gain pickups now, this one is missing that bridge cover, but is otherwise original

The RickenBacker 4001, I just love the tone of it so much. it always sounds kind of chuggy and it just sounds so awesome.

We all have that instrument that just speaks to us, and we don't know why. We love it for some irrational emotional reason. But we don't own it... there's some reason we haven't done the work to buy this crazy thing we love despite all logic and good sense...

For me, it's the Warwick Dolphin. I'm not a Warwick guy... I have a couple of Fenders, Dingwalls, and some oddball instruments. I am TOTALLY HAPPY with my collection, and all the sounds I can make with my current horde of instruments. I do not need a new bass. Ever.

But, if someone came up to me on the street, handed me the Dolphin, and said "Give me $7000 and this is yours", I know I couldn't say no. I'd sell my left nut, right then and there. No question. I love this bass with all my heart and I have no idea why.

So. What is your "irrational love" bass?

Gibson did a survey and found that most average guitar players own 8 guitars. When I heard that I instantly started counting my guitars. I'm definitely average, and I currently own 10 guitars. I let the thought of owning just 8 guitars sit for a couple of weeks, but today I got busy, dusted off a few guitars that I hadn't played in a few years, took some photos and put them up for sale.

Out of the 10 guitars I own there are only 2 I would never sell; A Jackson King V which was my first big guitar purchase which I earned with hard work as a night packer packing shelves at the local supermarket in high school (it was my gigging guitar when I used to be in a band), and my Korean made Squier Strat that I bought in 1997 (I still love it more than my Fender American Pro II Strat!).

I'm now wondering, if I sold off all the guitars that I'm more than happy to let go of, what guitars would take their place?

Would love to hear:

B) What are the top 8 guitars you'd like to own before you die?
