 So first off let's just check out the specs of the bass itself. As you can see it's an absolutely classic, gorgeous design, a beautiful finish. This is the five low finish. It also comes in a midnight blue, jet glow which is a black and then a natural colour and you can also get a walnut version which I think looks pretty cool too

So in my hands I have one of the absolute legends of the bass guitar world, a classic design that's been played by a ton of players but with the particular kind of McCartney, later Beatle stuff and Chris Squire from Yes making this his signature bass guitar. But it's a bass that I think perhaps can do more than people online would say and it's a more versatile design than it should be for what is a very simple passive design.  As I say I like this mute thing, I really really like the fact that it's got a mute and it brings a whole new character to the bass. I like the fact that the pickups aren't in the same places they would be on something like a jazz bass so you're getting a little bit of a different tone in that way. You don't really get a pickup in the precision bass position. This bridge pickup here is a little bit further back, kind of like the first few chords of a music man

What are you playing right now? What strings do you have and what style do you mostly play?

 The one modification I did do to this bass, I put a hip shot bridge on it, the original Rickenbacker bridges in my opinion, well for lack of a better term they suck, ok, sorry Rickenbacker but your bridges suck and there's a lot of people that will say the same thing that I do. The hip shot is a vast improvement, it's much easier to intonate, it sounds better, the bass plays much smoother overall in my opinion, it really does. It almost made this bass a different bass. So enough about hip shot, let's talk about the bass

 You probably heard that sudden burst of low end there if you've got good speakers or headphones on. Modern tone. Vintage tone. Now let's go ahead and bring both pickups in

It's in great shape as you can see, it does have stereo outputs, this is the mono output I'm running it through right now, this is stereo output which you can run a stereo cable split off to two separate amps which I do sometimes, the neck pickup would go to this amp here and the bridge pickup I run into the Fender Baseman 610 and I generally run a little bit of overdrive distortion on that, it gets close to a Getty Lee Chris Squire tone. This bass I've also added what is called the Zero Mod thumb rest and you know with a Rickenbacker there's really no place to put your finger or rest your thumb, I do kind of rest it here and I can play here but when you're up in this area to get some of these warmer sounds there's no place to put your thumb

 All right, you know what, this is the first time I've done a lot of fooling around with the mutes up and some cool tones, so don't let anyone tell you that the Rick is a one trick pony and I don't know, I'm kind of liking having those mutes there, loosen the thumb screws a little bit, I'm kind of liking having that mute there, so I don't know, let me keep this bridge. Fun stuff. I really love the changes in tone you get just by pulling that pot in and out. Pretty cool

 And pull the vintage up for the hack a bit. Oh, I like this. Tone back up all the way, vintage, mutes up all the way. Here we go

So I’ve got a 3 grand budget for a new bass but wanted to crowd source some opinions. I’ve never honestly considered spending so much before. My mind gravitated to either a Dingwall NG3 or a Fender P bass from the mod shop built to my exact taste. 

Those have been my ideal bass for some time but, now that I know I’ve got such a budget I want to ask

3k Budget for new bass

..I have a Squier Classic Vibe P-bass (bought new in 2011)  and a Fender Mustang (which is heavier than it looks.

An incredible and beautiful red and black Rickenbacker 4003 from 1990. MY absolute favourite instrument and it was my dream bass. Paired with my Silencer Noisegate and YYZ sansamp I've never heard anything that sounds better.

Is there any instrument you have purchased that killed your GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)? 

For me, it was a schecter stilleto studio. It was the first instrument that I bought and felt like it was super high quality, I loved the look and sound, and it just felt good in the hands.

It was some Squier P Bass, it was horrible, i also tried a music man sterling i believe, i don't remember, was not my kind of feel...

My impression is that the Rickenbacker 4003 is a one-trick pony, and the price is at least 2 to 3 times too high for what you get. If the 4003 sold for about $1000, it would still be expensive, but I might consider it. But a price tag over $3000 is not justified. I just graduated from university and wanted to buy a new bass as a graduation gift for myself. I’ve been playing bass for about a year now since covid started. I would say that I’m an intermediate bass player and have been using a squier jazz bass. I found a rickenbacker at a music shop in Manhattan. It’s a 4003 cherry red rickenbacker. It’s pricey at $3,200, I have the money but I kind of feel that I’m not yet at the level to fully utilize the Rick. Should I buy it or should I get more experience and buy one down the line.
