Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (November 24, 2021)

Interesting game - takes a while to figure out how to play

*First things first, I got this idea from The Brothers Murph who released a video on their Youtube channel this week listing their top 10 games according to BGG rankings, then later posted on their Patreon how they would rank the games in that list. So all credit goes to The Brothers Murph for this fun idea. I hope they won't mind me sharing it here. If you enjoy this I totally recommend you check out their Youtube and Patreon, they do a lot of fun stuff and even their Patreon content is free for everyone.*

Now on to the fun!

Post a comment where you write two lists, first the top 10 games you own and have played and according to their rankings on the Board Game Geek website. Next, reorder that list in descending order to reflect how you would rank them. And let us know a bit about why you rank them in that order!

My top 10 according to BGG are:

16 - **7 Wonders Duel**

20 - **Wingspan**

24 - **Viticulture Essential Edition**

40 - **The Crew**

53 - **Azul**

65 - **The Quacks of Quedlinburg**

80 - **Architects of the West Kingdom**

92 - **Patchwork**

114 - **Cartographers**

119 - **Res Arcana**

But my order for those would be:

1 - **Patchwork** - my favourite game of all time so it's an easy #1! I think **Patchwork** is unimprovable, it is a wonderful perfect information abstract game with a high skill ceiling. It creates the most exciting moments and difficult decisions. An absolute gem of a game.

2 - **Azul** - I'm a huge fan of open drafting mechanisms that lead to hate drafting as well as tile placement so I guess it's no surprise that both **Patchwork** and **Azul** top my list. This game has great table presence too which never hurts.

3 - **The Quacks of Quedlinburg** - it's just such silly fun! The bag building is well implemented but really what keeps me coming back to Quacks is that push your luck element.

4 - **Architects of the West Kingdom** - it was hard to rank this one because I've only managed to play it once so far. But that one game was up there amongst the most fun I've ever had playing a board game for the first time. It's a really clever worker placement game, perhaps my favourite one, though **Targi** gives it some competition. I think **Architects of the West Kingdom** could climb as high as #2 on this list but I'm not comfortable putting it up there just yet.

5 - **Cartographers** - always a casual good time. This game was my first non **Yahtzee** exposure to the roll/flip and write genre. It's great. I play it quite often and it has held up well to many plays.

6 - **Res Arcana** - I'm hoping this game will climb up higher after a few more plays. I've played it a handful of times and for whatever reason it still hasn't clicked for me. But I love the concept and the art, and I fully expect to have a blast playing this once I've wrapped my head around it a bit more. 

7 - **Viticulture** - I think this game is wonderful but suffers in comparison to **Architects of the West Kingdom**, I played them both on the same day. I'm excited to play **Viticulture** again but it didn't wow me to the same extent as **Architects of the West Kingdom**. 

8 - **Wingspan** - I'll give **Wingspan** credit because of all the overt engine building games I've played, it's the one where I most quickly understood the engine. It's a gorgeous game with fun game play but not a favourite of mine.

9 - **7 Wonders Duel** - I feel kind of sad having **7 Wonders Duel** so low on my list. I love fun open drafting mechanics. Bruno Cathala is my favourite designer. But I don't know, this one doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'll enjoy it more as time goes on. I'm still excited and motivated to play it again. For me confusing iconography can really impede my enjoyment of a game. When I compare the iconography of this game to other games on this list that are heavy in iconography, I find this one has the worst use of iconography. I'm constantly having to refer back to the rule book when I play this game which gets in the way of immersing myself in the experience. 

10 - **The Crew** - I've played through a bunch of the earlier missions at two players. I don't know if trick taking games are just not my thing, if this game really suffers at two players or if it will improve as the missions become increasingly more complicated. But so far we've accomplished every mission on the first attempt and I find it pretty dull.

Final thoughts: it's interesting to me how my rankings are almost in reverse order to the BGG rankings. I tend to prefer lighter games and love abstracts. I find BGG skews heavy and doesn't tend to favour abstracts (**Azul** is the top abstract game on BGG and only clocks in at 53 in the overall rankings!), so it's not too surprising that games like **Patchwork**, **Azul** and **Cartographers** are ranked a bit lower on BGG.

Monthly Board Game Bazaar - (April, 2021)

Very fun cooperative game, but comes with a learning curve

  Personally, I am enjoying playing it to analyze the many things wrong with it. Shame, because it’s a beautiful game, otherwise. I imagine the cynical designer/s thought they were clever and had a good laugh at coming up with the relentless setbacks making it so impossible to achieve the goals and win the game. It is actually just lazy game design and a nose-thumb at the consumer

 The rules are heavy and the game is nearly, if not utterly impossible to win what with one disaster after another. All the adventure cards are bad except perhaps one per deck. If you roll the dice and manage a victory, you may have to re-roll that victory and also get another damaging card! There isn’t time to build most protective items to get ahead as you are constantly being deluged with negative events, bad weather and other misfortunes while also attempting to accomplish the goals. After initial interest in the theme and artwork, the game is so punishing that I think most anyone would become frustrated and angry, toss it onto the bonfire

This game was designed to be a losing proposition.

 What I've found is that the deep decks and random dice rolls make for a wildly different experience each time. I'm sure there are mechanical steps to follow for better chances of success in each scenario but no plan is foolproof on this unforgiving island. I found myself literally laughing out loud as my (as I perceived it) excellent planning fell apart before my eyes in multiple run throughs. I've won once so far and it was quite gratifying

  As a co-op, I've heard this game is particularly hard to run through when one person has more experience than the other players - I think my biggest advice for those players is that its probably best to take a back seat and let your companions fall flat a few times as they learn what to be concerned about.  Bottom Line - I'm a huge fan of the theme, and the gameplay, but this is not a game for those who want to win more than they lose.

 If the kids are less concerned with winning the game and more interested in a story of struggle/survival then no problem but I feel like some will get discouraged before ever experiencing the joy of success. It would be best for you to have a facilitator to help and almost narrate for the kids if you are playing with ones on the younger side. The board and the story development from the cards you turn over in game lend themselves very well to a cool thematic story and it is easy to get into the narrative that develops through each play.  I think that this game is less well suited to younger kids (it says ages 8 up) - there are a decent number of rules/options to consider each turn and it is truly difficult to win

Laughably hard, great as a solo game, great replay value

Brilliant, deep, insanely thematic, and TOTALLY BRUTAL game! Robinson Crusoe just might be one of the most thematic and immersive board game experiences you'll ever have! It's right up there with the greats of the genre (Twilight Imperium 3, Pandemic Legacy, Arkham Horror, etc.).  But be warned: the game in NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to beat! If you don't like insanely difficult challenges, or you frustrate easily, AVOID this game. But, for the strong, brave, and even fool-hardy, much great adventure awaits!!  Robinson Crusoe really does make you feel like you're on a desert island fighting for survival! You will feel the isolation! You will feel the mind-numbing wet chill as you are soaked by hurricanes and tropical storms! You will feel the lack of warmth take hold if you cannot build a fire! You will feel the hunger pains as you slowly starve to death because you can't find enough food to survive!

Incredibly Thematic, Heavy Euro/Amerithrash Hybrid! Beware: BRUTALLY HARD Game!

 My wife and I have played two games together, and I've played a few more on my own, and we NEVER win. To make the game more fun, we've begun modifying the rules. The campaigns create mounting tension by means of addition hazards, addition goals, and a time limit (usually like 12 turns). To have fun, we have had to do away with most of the additional hazards, and especially the time limit; we're just not able to see how anyone could get so much done in such a few actions (even with Friday AND the dog)

 Hopefully we'll get better at the game by playing it, but I just wanted new players to know that it's okay to change some of the rules, if it will help you to enjoy the adventure and keep coming back for more! Or, maybe you just enjoy cooperative dying.  If the theme appeals to you, and you can stomach learning a bunch of very intelligent and sensible rules, you will love this game.
