It’s pretty cool when a company uses their athletes and allows them some free reign in the ski design aspect. The Salomon QST Blank is the result, and we’re pretty stoked to see them added to the already popular QST line. At 112 mm underfoot, this one falls in between the QST 106 and 118 models, with some familiar technologies carried forward, some new ones to add to the mix. Starting with a full poplar wood core, the skis are energetic and snappy to start. Add to that in the tips and tails, Salomon’s C/FX carbon and flax material makes the skis even more responsive and strong, without adding weight. They’ve been using this material in a lot of their skis, and it definitely lends to a unique and supple feeling that a lot of skiers really like, and we think it works very well in this application. Cork Damplifier is another technology that is being carried into the QST Blank, and this cork material in the tips and tails keeps the skis incredibly smooth and damp, playing off of the energy of the carbon and flax very nicely. It’s always interesting to see how Salomon uses a variety of different ingredients to make a ski perform a certain way. Not stopping there, Salomon uses their Double Sidewall, which is an injected ABS material into the underfoot portion of the ski. This gives this the 112 some much-needed torsional stiffness underfoot for carving power and on-trail versatility.

The reason why it's called Blank is because it was a blank sheet of paper and they basically said to the Salomon Freeride team, what do you want to ski on, what do you want to design and this is what they've come up with. Once you've narrowed down two or three skis you like the sound of, go read the full review of them on the Blister site. Same thing for your second pair, but look in the "all-mountain - more forgiving" and "powder - more directional" section. Off the top of my head, two skis that could probably work are the Atomic Bent 90 and the Salomon QST Blank, or the Volkl Revolt 95 and Blizzard Rustler 11.

Currently my one ski quiver is the  2019 Line supernatural at 179.  Last year I skied 26 days 10 out west 16 in Vt, Maine and nh.  The supernaturals excel in most conditions but I want to get a fatter ski for the powder(next year) and a shorter skinnier ski for park(spins no rails), tight NE trees,  and playful quick turns(this year). 


175lb at 5' 10" 38/m spend most of the time on diamonds and doubles. 

For the skinnier ski: Most "normal east coast" days I spend on steeps, tight NE trees, moguls, and natural side hits.  I am learning park can do 180's, working on 360's, and like to butter.  I no interest in rails.  So I think I'd like a bendy, tight radius, lightweight twip tip ski.  Maybe even shorter like 170cm?


For the powder days(both east and west).  I find myself hitting the more intimidating lifelines that still have stashes on them, hiking up to terrain to less traveled areas, hitting every side hit I can, and finally ducking into trees to get leftovers in the afternoon.  At one point I will have most likely gotten myself into a pickle and will have to jump turn my precarious ass out of it ...so that's kinda a factor too. 


Any suggestions for either would be greatly appreciated.

Need advice buying a 2nd and eventually a 3rd ski.

 What do you guys think? Right tool for the job today, that's for sure. Yeah mixed snow conditions, this thing just plows right through it all. Yeah pretty sweet. So yeah, we'll leave you with some skiing footage for now and then we'll meet you back in the studio and we'll kind of go through the changes and the construction and all those details that we normally do

 But yeah, it would be impossible for me personally to ignore the, the freestyle capabilities of this ski or rather it's, it's a, it's willingness to ski switch when you want to, which is pretty sweet. And it kind of, yeah, like I said, goes back to that idea that it'll work for a wide range of skiers. So that's the QSD blank from Solomon, a fantastic ski. You know, like I said, it's pretty hard to not have a good time on a powder ski when you get a bunch of really good snow

 So yeah, really cool ski. You know, Salomon kind of went back to the drawing board a little bit with their QST skis. A lot of the characteristics kind of carry over from what we got before and two skis or I think three skis but I'm for sure certain that two skis remain unchanged, that being the 92 and the 106. So the QST 99 is now the QST 98 like I talked about in the intro and then the QST 118 is gone and then it's placed, we get this QST Blank

 But yeah, super super fun, kind of the gist of it is that they designed this ski to work with a wide range of skier styles, wide range of snow conditions, stuff like that. We just had a fantastic run through some of the iconic Smuggler's Notch terrain. What do you guys think? Right tool for the job today, that's for sure. Yeah mixed snow conditions, this thing just plows right through it all

Hi ski gear friends, as above this is my second season and already eyeing a second pair. Aggressive style when at trials that I’m familiar with but cautious with unfamiliar ones. Love stable, damp skis, give me more confidence in crud and at speed. But wanted to try something with more quickness and playfulness for off-piste, tighter terrain, and deeper snow.

Lucky enough to experience some 10 inch plus pow days at Gore this season, and visited vail the first time. The kendo 88 really gave me some hard time in the deeper snow, had to sit in the back to get tips up/avoid catching edge. Demoed BC100 &amp; mindbender 99ti at vail to see if I could handle 100mm waist. Obviously my techniques are terrible, but didn’t experience anything different compared to my kendo, still possible yo tip them on edge. For BC I felt it’s too unstable/ not damp and I can just feel everything under it, while K2 is just too heavy for steep moguls/trees in the backbowls at vail.

Rustler seems a good option in between? Intended use: pow/relax/off-piste ski on the east, main ski for trips out west. Don’t plan getting third fat ski so will 104 wide enough to handle most pow days here and the west?

How’s your experience with Rustler 10 in powder. And any other recommendations under 110 you have?

I can still use kendo as the main East cost ski for ice and progression of carving.

Second Pair Question &amp; Discussion

 So that increased taper really makes for a smooth performing ski in that fresh and soft snow. And then just a closer look at that tail rocker from my angle here, you know, starts right here. So super long in the tail and then same thing in the tip. So just really loves to stay on top of the fresh snow, you know, great floater, even though it's the widest ski in Solomon's line

You know, it definitely floats like a much wider ski does come with some weight to it as well. You know, the just the sheer volume and mass make it heavy, but also that poplar is all there and for, you know, that that real real deal ski 2110 grams here in this length

 Lots of good torsional stiffness as a result and really good grip on firmer snow. You know, no one's going to mistake this for a frontside ski. But having that torsional stiffness there combined with the shorter turn radius definitely makes a lot of sense in that frontside application. We do see that shorter radius here

 And again, that bumps up as you get into the longer length. So, you know, be prepared for a heavier weight on the feet, but certainly doesn't feel that way with that rocker and taper shape, especially in the soft snow. I’m a Midwest skier (Minnesota) and have an older (2018 I think) pair of Salomon QST 99s and they do well with all the things you mention. I have no issues carving with them and they have a more playful feel to them.

I am looking into getting a new pair of wider all-mountain skis. I am looking for something between the 94-100 waist width range. I am 6'5" and 205lbs. I am an intermediate to advanced intermediate skier who is looking for a fun ski that will allow me to progress and get into more technical terrain. I am really looking for a ski that I can grow into for the long-term. I do not have a background in the park, but I like to hit side hits on the edges of groomed runs and have an overall fun time on the mountain. 

I ski in Indiana and on average ski around 25-30 days a season. I want a ski that is stable and can handle any snow condition I throw at it. A ski that can cut through choppy and tracked out snow but still maintain strong carving abilities. I am looking for an everyday ski for groomers in the Midwest. Of course, if the terrain is super icy, I can grab my narrower Rossignol Experience skis. But I also want a ski that I can take out west and enjoy some softer snow and technical terrain.

 I got to rip it in three inches today and had a ton of fun. So it's all upwards from there. If you're riding this in the foot, two feet of snow or anything going heli skiing or riding outside of America, like in Japan, when they get crazy powder, this would be a great ski for it. I'm wondering how durable they are and how the swing weight is especially, but obviously how it skis in various conditions

Any reviews of Volkl Blaze 106's?

 You do get a little bit of chatter in the shovel but that's to be expected for something this wide with this much rocker. That's just something you have to be okay with. But when you get this thing into where it wants to be, into soft snow, into variable snow, it really comes to life. It's super easy to flick

 At 112 underfoot it absolutely is an off-piste machine. It's not really going to be the best on the groomers but it does get up and hold an edge surprisingly well.
