Is Atmos on Arc just a gimmic or does it really make Arc better than Playbar for audio experience? Comparing only audio quality &amp; not the latest connectivity or smart assistant.

..if somebody knows how to do this, please let me know.  In hindsight, I wish I had bought a mid price range product first, rather than diving into the super expensive range

 Or maybe my old Vizio soundbar is just a diamond in the rough. In my opinion, I urge you to save yourself the utter guilt of overpaying for a sound bar that doesn’t sound any better than something that’s half the price..

Meh. Not what it’s “priced” up to be...

 Very clumsy setup and inconvenient to operate. What's the point of having wireless speakers if you end up with a bunch of cables anyway? Also, to switch back and forth from DirecTV to Netflix or Amazon, you have to manually switch the audio to get sound. Frustrating. The Playbar needs multiple optical audio inputs and the capability to manage audio inputs internally, (like a traditional AV receiver does)

 The Sonos tech reset my WiFi access point and nothing worked after that. They gave up. After 4 more hours on the phone with Ubiquiti tech support and several days researching myself, I finally got my network back up and was able to complete the Sonos setup process. The fix is complicated and too much to get into here

 In my case, I have a DirecTV receiver and a Panasonic smart TV for Netflix and Amazon programming. There is no way to plug two digital optical audio cables in to the Playbar. Sonos tech support says you have to add a 3rd party optical audio switch like the J-Tech optical switch which I did. It works well enough but you end up with another box, another remote, and a bunch more cables to hook everything up

Expectations Not Met

I know it gets much better with sub, but that is for now out of the price limit. I suppose I can play the music on Apple TV so the lack of Airplay feature in case of Playbar would not be a problem, right?.

immersive sound, amazing build and elegant design BUT

If you can get a really good price on a used Playbar (like, $200) then I’d go for it. Personally I think it’s the best soundbar that Sonos has made in terms of sound quality (I have all three).

Good sound is never obsolete. So usually my advice with speakers is not to get all hot and bothered with new hotness.

That said Sonos are more than speakers, they're an integrated system. If you're buying into the Sonos eco-system, you're accepting that you're paying a premium for sound equipment in exchange for convenience. So at that point you might as well not buy into older products. We especially shouldn't forget the legacy support issues from Sonos even though it's been a year.

 if price isn't an object, the Arc is a much better choice.  it's 8 years newer technology with support for modern audio codecs that the playbar doesn't have.  

but if you're on a budget, the Playbar is still an excellent sounding speaker.

I currently have a beam and two surround one’s. I want a more substantial soundbar but I’m not sure if I should purchase a refurbished Playbar for around $380 or just purchase a new Arc. I know the price is good for the Playbar but is it just worth spending more for the Arc? 

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Playbar or Arc?

 I entered selected the network on the Sonos App, entered the network password and it was up and running. Easy - Peasey. Buy this product instead of Bose. Great engineering

 In less than a week we had an incident where it randomly turned on full blast at 3:10 am playing Christmas music and then later in the week it just quit working. It was not connected to the network and even with an HDMI ARC cable directly to the TV, it wouldn't work. I would have had to unplug all of the nodes on our Google mesh network, plug it into our router with an HDMI cable to get it hooked back up. The Bose app is pretty useless and there were no manuals provided

 No remote control, it paired up with our cable remote in about 10 seconds. This is a great product. It connected easily to our wireless network and our Alexa devices. We didn't have to shut down our network, disconnect everything and use an ethernet cable

I've had a long and winding road like most everyone else here. it all began with the original Sonos Play:Bar (I think that's what they called it). Added a Sub and a pair of Play:5s. That was a pretty sweet setup. I had the TV side and the music side. And I really liked the 5s.

Well, I couldn't stand prosperity and had to go for the HomePods when they came out (we were a true blue Apple house at the time). So I got 4 HomePods order time and sold the 5s. Big mistake IMO. Not only did Apple discontinue the HPs, but my 5s were gone. 

I agree with some say about the HomePods issues. I've had so many support calls with Apple, especially in the early going. Lately. they've been good and the paired HomePods in my living room pump excellent music. They can't hold a handle to my ARC though for home theater. I still have the Sub. I've since acquired a Move and a Roam. 

so, I'm gravitating back to Sonos. It's sooooo much more reliable than the HPs. Just yesterday, one of them quit playing. I had to reset it  and repair them. I will say the sound is excellent, better than the ARC and the Sub. But, I'm considering going back to the 5s and getting a pair with my last upgrade credit (a $300 saving for 2). They were so sweet and my guess is the new generation 5s are amazing. 

Apple may do a soundbar down the road, but for music and TV audio, I think I'm solidly Sonos now. Their stuff just works and sounds great. Apple ought to acquire them.

Hands Down I’d personally recommend the Sonos Arc & Sonos Sub combo! 

The OG HomePods are great sounding speakers but the quality can’t match to the Arc & Sub together! :)

 The Sonos team is hugely helpful, very cheerful and often sincerely apologetic that you can’t get “x” to work now that used to work or that you need to “reset, recycle, get some other device, router, Sonos product” in order to do something seemingly straightforward (e.g. play content from your phone or computer on your expensive speakers) then think twice about going down the Sonos route.
