If you don't want to spend a ton of money on a 50 inch LED TV, look into the Sony KD-50X85J. It doesn't have as many of the same features as Samsung QN90A QLED, but it has HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and has VRR support after a firmware update. Although it doesn't have Mini LED backlighting, picture quality still looks good as it gets bright and the VA panel delivers deep blacks, but there's no local dimming feature to improve the contrast. The built-in Android TV is easy-to-use, and it has fantastic out-of-the-box accuracy. Sadly, like most VA panel TVs, it has a narrow viewing angle, and the image looks washed out from the sides, so it's not ideal for wide seating areas.

If you want the best 50 inch TV with an LED panel, the Samsung is a great choice, but if you prefer something cheaper, then look into the Sony. We tested the 55 inch model of the Sony, and the results also apply to the 50 inch variant.

The 5 Best 48-49-50 Inch TVs - Spring 2022

 This Sony comes with a remote that still includes a numeric keypad for punching in the stations. I feel this is easier to use than holding the up or down arrow to scroll through tons of stations. We are new to the streaming world, so just learning our way around. By keeping our local cable company, the channel numbers stay the same, so my non-tech husband is happy he can find all his Sports channels with no trouble

 And based on many reviews, getting the 120 Hz speed seemed important. After much deliberation, we chose the Sony X85J which is a 2021 model as we preferred not to go over $1,000 Purchase Price. Could have purchased a 2022 model with only the 60 Hz speed for $200 less but the salespeople insisted that was old technology and to have seamless fast motion, 120 Hz was the way to go.

        The sound from my apple tv not work, i didnt change anything from my old tv setup. The appletv plugs into the sony dvd player, and then the dvd eARC plugs into the tv. The tv and dvd also have an optical audio cable link. With this new one i had to plug in appletv directly to the tv to get the sound to work

It Stops Working!

 It’s not that it doesn’t work at all - the TV will detect whatever is plugged into a hub and even work - but you’ll run into screen blanking, audio degradation and connection issues under load. Forget plugging in game controllers directly or HDMI splitters if you need more ports. The system will recognize all these devices, but the USB ports are barely within industry spec and will choke in most situations.

All in all? It’s a good TV for the money, especially if you’re a gamer, just take the ‘smart’ functionality with a grain of salt. That part of it borders on incompetent, except you know someone made conscious decisions to do the bare minimum, which is pretty silly for a TV literally centered around internet use and made by a company that literally makes game consoles. But at least once you upgrade the connection a little, the OS is pretty stable, you’ve got a solid ecosystem of apps and things run pretty snappy from there.

 Sure, you can use wi-fi instead, but both connectivity options result in everything, including the entire system interface, running slower and jerkier than they otherwise could. This isn’t unique to Sony or the X85J, but it is pretty pathetic that this is even a thing past 2018 or so.

 As for the controller, Bluetooth works great, you’ll just have to make sure it’s plugged into a charger elsewhere.

Excellent mid-range TV, with some caveats

  Sound quality is better than most and somewhat loud. Of course a dedicated theater sound system will blow the TV speaker array out of the water. Yet by itself thew sound from the TV alone is not bad at all. The picture is uniformly bright even at the edges
