If you want to save money and still get a great TV, consider the Sony KD-X91J. Although it doesn't have as many features as the Samsung QN90A QLED, like Mini LED backlighting, it's still great for most uses. It has a higher native contrast ratio because it doesn't have any viewing angle technology. It also has a decent local dimming feature that helps it achieve remarkable black uniformity. Like most Sony TVs, it has excellent out-of-the-box accuracy, so you won't need to calibrate it, and it displays a wide color gamut. It also has decent reflection handling and great peak brightness in SDR, but in HDR, it doesn't get bright enough to make really small highlights pop.

If you're looking for the best 85 inch LED TV, the Samsung is an excellent choice, but if you're willing to compromise on features for something cheaper, check out the Sony. Unlike most other TVs in this recommendation, the Sony is only available in an 85 inch size.

Sony X90J series review: Polished experience, excellent picture

 This was April 28th. In order to "validate" my problem I was sent an email indicating the I need to send pictures of the defect (sound problems--don't know what picture of no sound looks like) and pictures of the model number and serial number (which I already gave them via phone). Once I sent that, they would "validate" my problem within 24 hours and then send me a new replacement TV within 5-7 business days. I chose to work with Amazon (this is the good news)

I heard back from Sony on 5/6. My problem was passed to Sony TV engineering, but only with the indication of "no sound". Spent 1.5hrs on phone with continued troubleshooting

 If you are brave you can disable it yourself with your cable. I chose to try 2 CEC Less HDMI adapters from Amazon. I am testing now, but it seems to help. I bought:

 In comparison, my Blu-ray player takes exactly ONE press of a button, but I like to use my Xbox for a superior picture, as well as 4K support (Xbox lacks Bluetooth).

 So, the upscaling of this Sony is strong, it has Dolby Vision, Bluetooth, 120Hz refresh, 4 HDMI ports, AND a headphone jack! (When all else fails, more on that later).

 It takes a total of 18 (yes, EIGHTEEN) button presses on the remote to successfully make a connection, and get me back to the input I was watching. (I'm not even including the button press on my headphones). In comparison, my Blu-ray player takes exactly ONE press of a button, but I like to use my Xbox for a superior picture, as well as 4K support (Xbox lacks Bluetooth).

Beautiful picture, functionality is total s#!t

 I will keep the TV, but would go for cheaper model next time for my particular needs in that specific room. Unless you sit close to the screen, lots of the advantages of this screen quality get lost. Sound wise, it's actually usable after some equalizer adjustments, but here too I'm using HomePods that deliver fuller sound and don't sound like a TV speaker. (the TV allows connections to Amazon and Google wireless speakers as well)

 On the plus side - HomeKit works well once the proper syncing order has been determined. It's a bit of a dance to get the order right of which button to push when. Oh, and if you want to get the free movies that come with the purchase, you have to install Google TV to fully access Bravia Core.

 With size and viewing distance, that price may not make much sense (even at the current discount), and a TV half the price would have probably been just as fine. I shied back from OLED because the viewing distance wouldn't justify the price increase, and the screen reflections in a very bright room, but then this model doesn't seem to hold much advantage in this respect. It's different for really large TVs (65'+) with proper seating distance, where the panel is more important than for my current setup. In retrospect, I bought Sony because of past good experience and was fine paying the higher price for quality control

Iffy quality control ; picture ok ; Google TV not worth it

Test a white screen on delivery!

 It has horribly unusable latency unless you activate VRR. However, doing so disables all local dimming controls and displays a blotchy mess of backlighting in any content that's remotely dark. Also, it DOES NOT display 4K/UHD at 120 HZ, even though it has HDMI 2.1 inputs
