Sony X85J 4K HDR LED TV | Product Overview

I've been using an OLED as my primary monitor for about eight months now and it has just worn me down. I ordered myself a Samsung Odyssey G7 that will be here tomorrow. I thought I would explain the "problems" with oled "monitor" usage since it comes up occasionally here. 

1. As many have said it's too big. Lots of screen real estate is nice for spreading out productivity apps to use simultaneously. Over time, looking all over the screen like that is just tiring.

2. Fretting about uneven pixel wear. I like my taskbar. My desktop icons are quite useful especially for work. I enjoy having any damn static wallpaper I want. I got tired of worrying about ruining my display.

3. I don't see this mentioned often but certain types of games really suck spread out over a big display even if you can back away some to play them. I found true rogue likes terrible on a 48"... games like Brogue or CDDA. Any game with dense text and menus is unpleasant at that size.

4. This is a "me" problem but I wear glasses with progressive lenses which compounds the size of display vs. distance problem. Aside from the low cost, the other reason 24" and 27" are the vast majority of monitor sales is because it is the most effective size for any type of computer use... duh.

The OLED is a fantastic gaming &amp; streaming experience for PC and consoles particularly so for HDR games developed with the console primarily in mind. However IMO, a traditional monitor is much more effective. HDR and infinite contrast are just not a worth the tradeoffs in daily use. I'll part with one more thought and it's that a 42" OLED isn't a bit better for computing. It's still way too big.

<p><strong>Update:</strong> The G7 finally arrived today. The curve is just... a lot. It&#39;s sooo bad. White browser windows look kind of off. The scan lines. What the heck is that?! If I drop it to 144Hz they go away but I can get a 144Hz monitor for a whole lot less than $700 plus tax. I&#39;m back to the huge oled unless and until I can figure out something better. Now I have to drag this thing to a Best Buy an hour away to get my money back. Has this OLED picture quality ruined me and now I can&#39;t use an LCD monitor? What have I done!</p>

It's a good way to find shows and movies that you might not have found otherwise. As far as other smart features go, the 85 is compatible with Nest, Alexa, and Chromecast as well as Apple's AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, so you get a well rounded experience that works with all the big names in the smart ecosystem field. Then there's the picture, and the 85 is pretty impressive

 Number 3 has an enhanced audio return channel, and both 3 and 4 are HDMI 2.1. They can handle 4K at 120 hertz right out of the box, and variable refresh rates are supposed to be coming with a future update. Both are important features if you have or are planning to get a new Xbox, PS5, or a compatible gaming PC

 As far as sound's concerned, the 85's not going to blow anyone away. It's a two channel, 20 watt system, just like a lot of the other Sony TVs. It's not bad, but adding a soundbar definitely improves the whole experience. And to be fair, most stock TV speakers aren't that great, and the models that do have good sound built in are quite a bit more expensive

  Sound quality is better than most and somewhat loud. Of course a dedicated theater sound system will blow the TV speaker array out of the water. Yet by itself thew sound from the TV alone is not bad at all. The picture is uniformly bright even at the edges

 And what that is, is do you see a halo around the logos that I'm showing here? And I would tell you that it's doing a pretty good job overall. I don't think you'll have any problems when you're watching anything with logos. Now let's test it on the cell phone once again. All right guys, I'm going to show you the cell phone now
