The Sony X90J is the best mid-range 70-75-77 inch LED TV that we've tested. It's an impressive TV for most uses. It looks great in dark rooms thanks to its high contrast ratio and great local dimming feature, resulting in deep uniform blacks and bright highlights in dark scenes. It's also bright enough to overcome glare, and it has decent reflection handling, so it's a good choice for a brighter viewing environment.

It's an excellent TV for gaming. It's been updated to receive support for variable refresh rate technology, and it's fully compatible with everything the PS5 has to offer. It has fantastic low input lag, resulting in a responsive gaming experience. Unlike Samsung TVs, including the Samsung QN90A, there's no difference between 'Game' Mode and 'Movie' Mode, so you don't have to sacrifice picture quality when gaming.

It's not perfect, though, as it falls just short of being able to display a wide color gamut with HDR content. HDR still looks amazing on it, but some colors appear slightly muted compared to other TVs. Overall, this is a great TV.

Moving to a new house, so decided it's about time to upgrade my **12 years old, 32 inch, "HD Ready"** a.k.a. **720p** TV.  
Let that sink in for a moment. *That's* my baseline. 

The new TV will be mounted in the reception room,   
above my (higher than usual) Victorian fireplace.

The TV will sit against the only large, empty wall in the room, at sitting-eye-level height.

Some details:

* the sofa opposite the TV will be 3 - 3.5 meters (10 - 11.5 ft) away
* the TV will be opposite the window. Not as bad as it sounds: the windows have wooden shutters, I expect most TV watching to happen in the evening, and the window is SE-facing, so not that much light in the afternoon. But still, not ideal.
* there will likely be another armchair or sofa to the side of the room, at almost 45° to the TV
* it's mostly for movies. Maybe some light gaming.

Get. A. **BIG**. One ??

Like, 80+ inch big. Which means one of:  
LG UP80 series @ 82" -&gt; £1099  
Samsung AU7100 @ 85" -&gt; £1299 (above budget, but OMG 85")

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's the endless praise for the best image for OLED TVs like LG C1 series (and it's predecessor the CX), but these are outside the budget by far - unless you can persuade me that a 55" with amazing quality fits the bill better. 

The only LG OLEDs that (barely) fit the budget are LG A1 or B1 @ 65", both (curiously) for the same price of £1200, and quite a bit smaller than the above behemoths.

And then there's the "bargains":   
TCL 75P615 LED @ 75" for £730  
HiSense 75A6GTUK LED @ 75" for £750  
I even found found a 2020 Samsung Q60**T** QLED @ 75" for £900

I don't know much about Sony's lineup

Best bang for the buck when upgrading from a stone age TV?

Choices include major names like from Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max and Sling TV, but as usual Netflix isn't included. Search leans heavily into Google Assistant voice commands, with suggested phrases like "Show me free movies" front-and-center, and I appreciate the ability to dive deeper into sections like Comedy TV Shows or New Movies. All told, I still prefer the simple, app-based menus of Roku, in part because Google TV still seems cluttered with stuff I don't want, but it's a more capable system than Samsung, LG or Vizio

 Sony's sleek looks and the Google TV operating system score additional points in its favor, as does its next-gen console support (it has 4K/120fps inputs and Sony promises VRR... sometime) and built-in NextGen TV tuner

The 6 Best 70-75-77 Inch TVs - Spring 2022

 This was April 28th. In order to "validate" my problem I was sent an email indicating the I need to send pictures of the defect (sound problems--don't know what picture of no sound looks like) and pictures of the model number and serial number (which I already gave them via phone). Once I sent that, they would "validate" my problem within 24 hours and then send me a new replacement TV within 5-7 business days. I chose to work with Amazon (this is the good news)

 I summarized again the symptoms. I asked if I could purchase a new soundbar, have it shipped to Sony and have Sony TV Engineering test with my soundbar to isolate and fix the problem.  Update (5/14/2021) It has been 3 business days (the prescribed amount of time to wait for response). I had not heard back, so I called Sony

 In fact, with the previous (deemed defective model) I had tried with another soundbar and had problem, so I have asked them to re-open case. Not happy..

 Once I sent that, they would "validate" my problem within 24 hours and then send me a new replacement TV within 5-7 business days. I chose to work with Amazon (this is the good news). Amazon took care of the return right away, and I ordered a new set that same day (price had decreased $200 in two weeks since I purchased). My new TV arrived the next day

Great Picture, Problems syncing with soundbar [see update], problems with eARC support, CEC support

 In comparison, my Blu-ray player takes exactly ONE press of a button, but I like to use my Xbox for a superior picture, as well as 4K support (Xbox lacks Bluetooth).  This seems like a software fix needed on Sony's end. I've owned this TV for 2 months, and no such fix has been made. If you go into the settings (such as "Bluetooth"), instead of taking you to the selected setting, it takes you to the home screen instead! This creates a couple of issues

 It takes a total of 18 (yes, EIGHTEEN) button presses on the remote to successfully make a connection, and get me back to the input I was watching. (I'm not even including the button press on my headphones). In comparison, my Blu-ray player takes exactly ONE press of a button, but I like to use my Xbox for a superior picture, as well as 4K support (Xbox lacks Bluetooth).  This seems like a software fix needed on Sony's end

Beautiful picture, functionality is total s#!t

 Terrible warranty and policy standards (I'll give them an "F"). Also, their "smart" features and overall interface is slow, glitches (kicks me out of programs), randomly resets itself, and the refresh rate of streaming services/channels is abysmal ("D").

 I will keep the TV, but would go for cheaper model next time for my particular needs in that specific room. Unless you sit close to the screen, lots of the advantages of this screen quality get lost. Sound wise, it's actually usable after some equalizer adjustments, but here too I'm using HomePods that deliver fuller sound and don't sound like a TV speaker. (the TV allows connections to Amazon and Google wireless speakers as well)

 On the plus side - HomeKit works well once the proper syncing order has been determined. It's a bit of a dance to get the order right of which button to push when. Oh, and if you want to get the free movies that come with the purchase, you have to install Google TV to fully access Bravia Core.

 With size and viewing distance, that price may not make much sense (even at the current discount), and a TV half the price would have probably been just as fine. I shied back from OLED because the viewing distance wouldn't justify the price increase, and the screen reflections in a very bright room, but then this model doesn't seem to hold much advantage in this respect. It's different for really large TVs (65'+) with proper seating distance, where the panel is more important than for my current setup. In retrospect, I bought Sony because of past good experience and was fine paying the higher price for quality control

Iffy quality control ; picture ok ; Google TV not worth it

My issue is with the ARC set-up with a home theater system. I replaced a Samsung TV with an ARC channel and all devices (DVD player, Roku, game console, occasional laptop) controlled through the Denon receiver. With only two HDMI cords buried in the wall and 20 feet of distance between the TV and input devices, it is impossible to connect the desired number of devices any other way without opening up the wall and running new cable or having an ugly gang of wires beneath the TV.

Beware integration with home theater systems

 Also, the size of these TVs probably means that moving the TV yourself to a service or return center is going to be an issue. It's bad enough that a lot of big TVs often arrive with cracked screens anyway.  Otherwise, you'll be in my position, past the return window, either dreading with with warranty service or living with a fairly flaw with a fairly expensive piece of technology that really should perform perfectly for fifteen years, like our previous Sony TV.

Test a white screen on delivery!

Sony doesn't support their Smart TVs and that's a shame. Maybe nobody else does, either, but this is what I will look for in my next TV.
