Supernote A5X

I got a Supernote A5X recently. Love it.

For note taking and academic PDFs, reMarkable 2 and Supernote A5X (both 10”) are excellent, Onyx Boox devices less so (in my personal opinion). Though if you want 13”, your best bet is the Boox Lumi series or the Fujitsu Quaderno A4 (I don’t think Papyr is that great based on reviews).

I used my colleague's RM2 for a day and liked it a lot—but based on his video, I got the Supernote A5X and I prefer it by a lot. Supernote has several half-baked features but the strongest feature is one I use in my math class a lot: you can circle pretty much anything and make that a "title" that you can jump to in your document.

I would also recommend looking into the Supernote A5X, heard a lot of good things about the note-taking expierence there. They are good with updates and don't force a subscription model on you for basic functions like reMarkable.

Last but not least I look for a nice reading experience since I would like to do all in one device. I was about to buy the remarkable 2 but since they introduced the connect plan I'm not convinced anymore. The Supernote A5X seems really good but I'm not sure it works for what I need.

Being very general here, Supernote is a better note-taking device, while Boox is a better reading device. They both manage well at both functions. Supernote is catching up and is constantly making updates and developments with a communicative team, Boox has stated they will support their devices for a min of 3 years. Note that there is a delay with shipping out the Supernote A5X (although I believe A6X may be in stock).

He also does in-depth reviews of a lot of eink devices, and now doing a step-by-step detailed how-to guide for Boox devices. There are also other options to consider like Boyue Likebook Alita/Mimas/P10, and Boox Note 2/3, Boox Max 3/Lumi and Supernote A5 (discon but still receives updates, and occasionally found used for sale on their subreddit).

r/Supernote A5x (10.3”) is also another option. They’re known for their CS, and are very well loved by the community. No frontlight and very limited in apps but have a very communicative team with an open roadmap for future software/firmware updates and features. I would still say this is more targeted towards note takers though others may argue with this.

Also if PDFs are going to be one of the main functions, you really want to be looking into a min 10” device. Supernote A5X afaik doesn’t play audiobooks (and doesn’t have a frontlight in case that’s important). The original Likebook P10 is notorious for having pretty terrible handwriting support, perhaps the new P10W (with a wacom emr layer) is better but I haven’t looked into it at all.
