- If you’re ok with no frontlights and the 7.8” despite my concerns, the Supernote A6x basic set is also an option at $399. You could get see about getting your hands on a used device as well on the Supernote forum. You may also find an A5 (older linux based model) within budget.

Anyway, let's rule out devices that are too small, like the Supernote A6X. - While annotating pdfs, I may need to zoom in regularly and move in the document. So it needs to be as quick as possible while reading pdf for an eink display (I am not asking for a 90Hz display of course.). - I'd rather not have many more features other than note taking and pdf annotation.

r/Onyx_Boox Nova Air is supposed to be pretty good with the new screen film they have on the device. Also take a look at the r/Supernote A6X (supposed to have a ballpoint pen feel).

Tried the boox lumi, boox note 3, supernote a6x, remarkable 2, and papyr. The Quaderno Gen 2 in A5 and A4 are the only devices I use daily. They are the lightest devices on the market with the new generation DPT screen. There are software limits and you will not get all the advanced features of the other devices.

Larger ereaders with note taking are expensive so please be mindful of that. You’re talking about a $400-600 investment for a ~10” device (Likebook P10W, Kobo Elipsa, Boox Note Air 2, Boox Note 5, Supernote A5X); and a $250-$350 investment for an ~8” device (Kobo Sage, Meebook P78 Pro, Boox Nova Air, Supernote A6X). If those prices are ok with you, my recommendation for you would be a r/Supernote device (if you don’t require a frontlight and are looking more at notebook, kindle app, and sideloaded books), or a r/Onyx_Boox device (if you do require a frontlight and would like access to multiple reading app platforms beyond kindle since it runs open android with Google play access). Being very general here, Supernote is a better note-taking device, while Boox is a better reading device.

If you will just be reading and highlighting a Kindle Paperwhite will be good enough. If you are looking for more note taking abilities you might want to look at something like a Supernote A6X or A5X.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite 2 which I basically retired, a Poke 3 (my main ebook reader, and for other “fun” stuff like Redditing), and a Supernote A6X (for note taking and productivity stuff).

Supernote A6X or Onyx Boox Nova Air are probably your top choices. Between the two I’d say that the Nova Air is closer to RM2 writing feel (and also works with the RM2 pen, if you really care about the writing feel), though that’s my personal opinion and your mileage may differ. (I’ve used RM2, A5X, and Nova Air before.

In this range of price, you have the Supernote A6X (7.8 inch). Great feeling in writing if you like ball pens, good ereader with ability to install the kindle app if you want (but no dictionary), excellent functions to annotate pdfs, ebooks and office documents, cloud to sync your files.
