Does not quite fit the Synology 218+

Posted @r/HDD: I just got a 12tb external hdd for $200. I backed up most important documents and it only filled 1Tb. Should I return it and get a synology 220+ for $299 and use the 2tb externals I already have into the drive? My budget is -$300.

 Fast forward two weeks, when I came home today, I found that my NAS was off and it would not turn on. I tried to make sure that the cable is fully plugged in, and tried different outlets, but it's still not working - I have a feeling either the cable is faulty, or the loose fit with the socket damaged something in the NAS. I don't know if this fits power sockets on other NAS well, but beware that the cable DOES NOT FIT the Synology DS218J like they advertised!!  1 star for working for two weeks.

My wife has been a long time Apple-user, and I'm a recent convert (2021 Mac Air M1).  Now our entire home eco-system is Apple, we both of Macbook Air and iPhones.  I have been using a Raspberry Pi as a headless media server attached to an external DAC, but it recently died.  So, I've been thinking about purchasing a Mac Mini to run as a NAS, headless media server, and application server for a virtual table top that I use to host game nights on.  

Here is a more defined list of my goals:

* A NAS so that I can store all my videos, photos, and music on a single drive plus automatic backups of our laptops.
* File access from my NAS over the Internet is a big plus.
* Headless media server, I've been using Moode Audio on a Raspberry Pi, but it has recently died. 
   * I access the media server via my iPhone, iPad, or laptop.  
   * The music is stored on a USB HDD attached to the media server.
* Run a few applications in the background, such as FoundryVTT.

very lately this topic crossed my mind quite a few times and I thought to reach out to fellow Redditors who are way better at this than I am.  


So without further ado, I would like to unify the storage of my and my family's photos. Previously we were using a bunch of pen drives, old laptops, phones, and basically over time all this content got mixed on multiple devices and multiple cloud solutions. By unifying, I mean I want to keep it all in one place and to be sure I'll be able to show these to my children 40-50 years from now.  


Is there a good way to do it that:

* reasonably affordable
* safe from components and/or hardware failure
* easy to put the files from multiple devices (does not need to happen automatically)

<p>If it comes to hardware that I already own, I have a mid-high-end desktop gaming PC with some room to add few HDDs to my system (not sure how will this affect power consumption but I assume they can be unplugged). In terms of cost limitation, I would like to either spend more at once (under 300 USD preferably) or keep a small yearly subscription for the service. In terms of data volume, I am not sure but that would be 2-3 TB to start off with but definitely will need more in the future.</p>

I'm a vision and graphic deep learning engineer. I do keep a local small validation data and parameters. They're total of 20-30TB consists of images, video, text.

Solution (1): using cloud; which is safe, easy access, but expensive 

Solution (2): using a external hard drive, its relative cheaper. But need to back-up every 3-5 yrs in case of damage and need to be carry when  travelling. 

Not sure which way to go and any other solutions ?
