They give you the best insulation for the weight that you can buy. The uberlite is the lightest full size pad there is and still has an R value of 2.3. The Xtherm is so warm you could lie right on ice in freezing conditions and yet it’s only 600g or so. At the high end, performance is more of a priority than durability but they are perfectly useable.

Being able to throw it down for post-lunch naps is also really convenient. Not having to worry about popping an inflatable provides some peace of mind too.

and too light(R value of 0.5) to be your only insulation. If you are planning on sleeping outside, then you need to add some additional insulation. Ground will suck away your bodies heat. Something like NeoAir Uberlite is pretty compact and will allow you to sleep and survive during the night.

It seems fragile but held up great despite some pretty questionable campsite selection. Mine developed a small leak weeks after, independent of the thru hike while I was doing some trail building and MEC did a full cash refund no questions asked - I had somewhere in the area of 80 nights on it by then. I plan on hitting the CDT in 2022 and feel comfortable bringing an Uberlite along with a patch kit should something similar occur.

I have a Feathered Friends quilt comfort rated for 40 degrees, and I sleep cold in it (if I don't take any of the advice I recommend below) at 55 degrees, on a Thermarest NeoAir Uberlite. A good tip from cycling is to wrap your toes with tin foil. Not the whole foot, just the toebox area. Having a well insulated pad that is oriented the right direction (make sure it's not flipped upside down because some are sided, e.g.
