 Hey, what's going on everybody? So today I'm going to show you how to set up a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X from scratch for use with your home network. So first off, the EdgeRouter X is not like your typical home router that you would buy from Walmart or Target or whatever. You can't just bring it home, plug it into your modem and then your desktop and everything. Be good to go right out of the box

 Please don't plug anything emitting power into 1, 2, or 3. It'll probably mess it up. I haven't tried it. I don't want to gamble with my money

 It's just not plug and play. So first off, the router I'm going to use in this video is just the regular EdgeRouter X, not the SFP version. So if you don't know the difference between the regular 5-port EdgeRouter X and the 6-port EdgeRouter X SFP, the regular EdgeRouter X only has the copper ports and it is only able to accept power over ethernet and pass it through. It doesn't create it itself

 So let's just go back to the main page, which is the dashboard tab. And let's also open up another website just to see if the internet is working. Let's go to walmart.com

I just switched to 1 gigabit internet this morning and I am looking to upgrade my router to make sure all of my devices are getting good and consistent speed over Wifi. I have a lot of active devices at any given moment because I have a large family of gamers with multiple gaming PCs and I know it is probably pushing my router to the max during my prime time usage. Any recommendations? My spending cap is probably around $450-480.

 Let's see, firewall slash NAT. So if you need to do port forwarding and such, different firewall policies, NAT, NAT groups, this is where you do it, services, VPNs, IPsec site to site, QoS, which is quality of service, users, yeah, you know that already, fig tree, even I don't know what that is, that looks pretty complicated. I'll have to do more research on that later, and wizards, that's where we started. So while we're at it, let's also just make sure that the router is routing correctly and the internet is working, so let's just try various websites, so Google, yep, that loads, YouTube, yep, that seems to be loading too, let's see, let's go back to Google, let's do a speed test, oh, that's more like it, I mean the 56 download looks right, but the upload, that looks kind of pathetic, it's supposed to be up to 10, I'm not sure why it's so low, anyway, yeah, so I just bought a new internet for my place, and yeah, it was around 50 download, and it's supposed to be up to 10 upload, but oh well

 But I decided, just me personally, I want to be a little more complicated and I want to use this more for experimentation. So I'm not going to have that enabled. But if you just want one range of IP addresses, then yeah, you would have that enabled. So the secondary LAN, ethernet one, this is the range of IP addresses, DHCP is enabled

Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X unboxing, first impressions & configuration

I have 2 fiber internet in my home (from different ISPs) plus an LTE modem with 100GB data limit.

The reason I have 2 fiber connections is because if one goes down, I want the router to switch to the 2nd one. And if both of the fiber connections go down, switch to LTE modem which basically never goes down so it’s always guaranteed connection in worst case scenario.

I have Synology RT2600AC but it only supports 2 connections.

Also if the router can support WAN connections instead of LAN then I can directly hook up my fiber internets to it rather than connecting ethernet cables from my ISPs’ modems. In that case I also need the router to support VLAN ID which RT2600AC doesn’t have.

Is there such a router that I can hook up 2 WAN and 1 LAN connections and failover between them in a specific order?

1 ???  April 1 observation, of ER-4, using firmware version 1.10.9: This router performs well, as an IPSec VPN endpoint. But it goes into never never land if the power goes out and back on

If it has trouble even managing that, then bridge the damn thing into just a dumb cable modem and drop in a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X or Mikrotik HeX for $60 as your wired router. Switching - Unless you can get PoE injectors for free or super cheap, I'd opt for a PoE core switch in place of the Netgear. Plenty of enterprise stuff (Cisco, Juniper, HPE, etc.)

Wifi coverage in my home (4 floors) has been pretty bad and i'm looking for some suggestions.  I've recently pulled ethernet to each floor and have a 24-port switch (Not PoE) as my home run.  Cable internet in my area is through Altice, and I'm stuck with their all-in-one box with the router/modem combo.  I'd have to downgrade my tv service in order to get a standalone router and modem, and attempted to 'Bring my own router' to the Altice service has been a nightmare.  Let's assume I'm stuck using their router for this setup.

Currently I've hardwired a few other routers to various locations in my house, with each router configured as an access point.  All are set to the same SSID and my devices \*should\* be connecting to whatever signal is strongest as they roam the house.  However, the routers are unsightly and as a result, are sometimes placed in sub-optimal conditions due to either space constraints, power cord locations, or just aesthetics.   I'm trying to determine what the best path forward is for my current needs.

I've considered a mesh system like the TP-Link Deco M9, Deco X60, Netgear Nighthawk Mesh, etc. that can be had at Costco in the $200-300 range, but don't know if these options make the most sense given the fact that I'm able to hardwire in any room and that I don't really need or want a wireless backhaul.  Additionally, these devices seem to still require separate power bricks and placement somewhere on a surface.  With the placement of my ethernet jacks in each room, this would leave me running exposed cables and is not idea.

I think I'd like some kind of PoE setup where I can install the APs on the ceiling, which I believe might also help improve the range and signal.  I've seen the UniFi products recommended, but don't know if they'll work well with my Altice modem/router, or if there's a bunch of other hardware needed in addition to the actual access points.  I believe TP-Link and others also have similar units, but really don't know where to begin or what I should be excluding from my search.

Budget is about $300, plus or minus $100, for ideally 3 APs and whatever else is needed to get them up and running.  I'd appreciate any guidance, considerations, etc. that would help me get this checked off my list.  Thanks!

$300 budget - What's the best way to add access points in a wired home with with an Altice One all-in-one modem/router combo?

I've always liked the Ubiquiti stuff - at home, I use their AP's (and have for businesses in the past) and used to use a USG-3.  However, when connection speeds increased, the USG-3 was not cutting it - Smart Queues (fq_codel) was simply not able to keep up (I have a 350mbps symmetrical FTTH connection). I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading

 So, due to Ubiquiti's lack of a suitable offering in the range I'm willing to spend, I buy the ER-4.  Overall, this thing is great - I've never used an EdgeMAX product, but I setup UNMS and I'm happy with it. Overall, it just works - a great device. Setup was a breeze

 I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading.  I can get it to work, but the limit on mine seems to be around ~300mbps of actual throughput - a sizable hit, and not one I'm willing to make.  The next thing I want to do is setup an OpenVPN connection, to use over a VLAN, to my lab network. This, while it works, simply is a pain in the ass - I personally don't know why I didn't test this more, but I hate having to manage VPN functionality that fully exists in the CLI. It's lazy
