 Even if they are the same quality as the old made in Japan version as the manufacturer states, they just inherently feel cheeper now with that knowledge, especially since its branded directly on the binoculars. Overall I was vary disappointed with these and returned them. Hopefully they correct these deficiencies on for v2.

Close focus not as listed. Better field of view but awful design downgrade from last model.

 I compared the Vortex Viper HD 8 x 42 with the Meopta Meopro Air HDED 8 x 42 (650 euros). If the Vortex, according to some reviews, is close to the top (Swarovski, etc), the Meopta ís the top: very, very high clarity and brightness and an amazing field view. The Vortex isn't that level. But, overall, for this price level, a good one!

Focus Wheel Counterclockwise

 Given all of that maybe the unit came from a bad production run?  Initial Vortex "VIP" response was good: returned bino's, they worked on them for a week or so then sent them back to me. From repair notes Vortex did their best: replaced right diopter/ocular assembly, repaired/adjusted focus wheel assembly etc. Sadly, upon return to me the binos' diopter function was still unusable - so much tension during adjustment the right bino barrel is displaced at swing joint behind focus wheel. I'm guessing either production run no good or the model's physical design & assembly tolerances are flawed

 Yes mechanism is fully "unlocked" (pulled up until it clicks). These are $500 binoculars of mediocre quality if not outright flawed design and construction. Look to other brands at this price point.  4/20/2021 reduced overall rating from 2- to 1-star: Vortex now telling me the V200 HD 8x42 has been back-ordered at least since 4/12

Not only did they not notify me of that 8 days ago, Vortex Service is unable to tell me when I can expect a replacement for my defective unit. So I'm out $500, without binoculars, and with no answers from Vortex

 So, what to conclude? Did I pay an extra $200 for a better carry case and a harness? Don't get me wrong--these are excellent binoculars. The quality of the optics cannot be denied. But I found the Monarch 5 optics just as good, and the Pentax only a smidgen behind. If there is an optical difference between the Viper and the Monarch 5, I couldn't tell

 Also my pair came with severed slot on one side for eye cup covers. I have written seller in hope of getting a replacement. I learned of these options from Audubon review and have not yet birdied with them but hope and expect happiness ; ) even at a more reasonable price point. Value for money

I purchased these to compare with Zeus Conquest and Vortex Razor, all 8x42 HD. My beloved pair of Zeus Victory’s were stolen during travel, and are now prohibitively expensive. I thought that I would select the Razor or Conquest, but I found those to be uncomfortably heavy for long birding. My fault for getting out of shape! These Vipers feel lighter, have sharp optics and nice features with telescopic adjustment of barrels to use with and without glasses

 The Vipers are great products and much better value than the Swarovskis and Leicas of this world.

Solid quality

 The focus, diopter, and eye relief are all easily adjustable and intuitive. The fully adjustable shoulder harness pack is well-padded and fits comfortably. The kit also includes a simple "neck strap" for those that don't want to wear the shoulder harness + pouch assembly. At one point, I had a couple technical questions, so I called the Vortex customer service number and the staff there were polite, professional, knowledgeable, and generous with their time in explaining everything

Wonderful binoculars for birding!

 I had some trouble with the dioptic focus ring so I sent them in for repair under Vortex’s excellent lifetime warranty. To my surprise they sent these excellent binoculars to replace the Talon. You can read other reviews about how great the Viper binoculars are. I just want to give Vortex a shout out for great customer service and the best warranty in the industry!!! That alone is worth a few extra bucks over the Nikon Monarch or other brands
