The Yaktrax Walk was one of the first snow grips on the market, and its design has changed very little over the years. It features zinc-plated steel coils wrapped around rubber under the foot, and the coils dig into snow, ice, and even dirt and rock. These work very well on shallow snow or thin ice over firm surfaces like pavement. They are also easy to put on, lightweight, and pack down to a very small size. The icing on the cake? They are very reasonably priced.  
However, the coil design doesn't work so well in deep snow, where crampon-style spikes with larger points are more appropriate. The coils also aren't very comfortable when running because they protrude from the bottom of the shoe, creating an uneven landing surface. But aside from these niche uses, the Walk are great for most everyday winter uses on slippery urban surfaces. And for the price, these are the best option out there for users expecting mostly light-duty winter walking. 

Switchback Travel

The MICROspikes above are an excellent performance option for intrepid winter hikers, but the aggressive spikes are overkill for more casual activities like running errands around town or shoveling the driveway. Enter the Yaktrax’s flagship Walk snow grips, which trade spikes for low-profile steel coils that stretch across the bottom of your shoe or boot. The design is very light at just 4 ounces per pair, easy to get on and off with a stretchy polyelastometer harness, and affordably priced at just $20. Added up, the Walk is a great all-around value, even if you only wear them once or twice a season.

The biggest tradeoffs to the Walk’s budget-friendly design are lack of versatility and durability. The coils bite decently well into harder surfaces like ice and packed snow and are less prone to clogging up than the MICROspikes above, but they’re not built for covering technical terrain or navigating steep slopes. A number of hikers have also reported premature deterioration—particularly along the rubber netting underfoot (most designs use metal)—which gives us pause in recommending them for anything more than light around-town and daily use. Yaktrax Walk Traction Cleats for Snow & Ice Review

 The classics (now Walks) are our preferred sets, as they are on and off easily and great for around town and in and out of buildings.

 Essentially, these should be considered short-lived items that are relatively inexpensive and require periodic replacement.

The rubber components are living, as I am careful to make sure that the rubber straps run between the lugs on my running shoes.  This is especially important in the heel area, as the heel strike zone is a high wear area on my running shoes.

This is a good product in theory, however it is made from poor materials without enough care to longevity and these can still be slippery on smooth surfaces.  The strap stitching is poor, and one strap frayed on mine after around four uses and is now not anchored to the rubber portion of the cleats. I sought help from Yaktrax but was told it was out of warranty so tough luck.  Also, the coiled spring design is good in snow and some kinds of ice, but the cleats can be extremely slippery on hard floors like tile, marble and similar surfaces

I've run and hiked in these about 20 miles over the last week, so I wanted to post some initial thoughts. I live in Anchorage, Alaska where it has snowed and rained a couple inches over the last two weeks, resulting in snowy, slushy, and very icy roads. This area of Alaska inexplicably (in my opinion) does nothing to treat their roads, so we have a mix of smooth ice in residential neighborhoods, ice with a mix of rough snow on sidewalks, and hard-packed snow on trails, which has given me a chance to test out these Yaktrax in a variety of conditions. The yaktrax give stability in all, but they definitely work best when there's rough snow and occasional patches of ice on the sidewalk

  Pictures: wearing yaxtrax backwards on running shoes, yaktrax have no visible wear after 20 miles, yaktrax let me walk carefully in this smooth icy neighborhood, and yaktrax let me run with stability in sidewalks covered with rough ice and snow.

  The one day we had really slushy snow, I felt like I was running in sand and took the yaktrax off in frustration. I immediately felt the difference - without the yaktrax, I could hardly move forward in the slush. With the yaktrax, while I was definitely getting more of a workout than normal trying to move through the slush, I was able to get purchase on the slush to move forward.  A few issues regarding fit - I purchased a medium and I wear a women's size 8
