Theater room build progress- updates to come

I’m 35 and grew up with technology but am a novice when it comes to surround sound and receivers. I picked up a Yamaha rx-v685 and some klipsch towers, center and surround on Craigslist. I think they a little older but I understand I can just upgrade those along the way? Still don’t have a sub.

Optical drive as a CD player?

I have been using my model 1 sega cd to play music with my Yamaha rx-v685 receiver with polk signiture series speakers. Didn't have any of those issues that many talk about. Would probably have to use expensive audio test equipment to even pickup issues on most cd based based stuff. Sometimes these issues are signs of equipment failing from over use and or using burned media.

When I upgraded to a Yamaha RX-V685, I got it mainly to have internet streaming built in. I thought the extra power would be minimal but in fact the whole system came alive with the extra power/quality, plus I now have pure direct which is always engaged for stereo and for multichannel audio without video. So effectively all the faff of integration has been done for me. OK, it’s not high-end audiophile stuff, but it’s pretty good, it’s in the family cinema room and we all love it.
