 So the Yamaha straight out of the box has a classic setting which is the same as you basically had on the old Yamaha thr range. and then you have Boutique and Modern. So I've gone through those and kind of programmed five sounds that I thought were the better ones. the best ones! I could get out of the different modes so you have clean if crunch of lead, high gain and specials are going through all those with the boutique and modern and programmed five sounds

 Second one, this is a crunch where I haven't set up the noise gate so there is it. Tiny bits of hits going on I don't know if you can hear it on YouTube but I can second sound a crunch. this one is on the modern setting [Music] Yeah, so that's kind of the best crunch sound I was able to get from the modern a boutique settings which is not a great thing. Sound Number three: Okay, so this is a lead sound and this one is a modern setting as well

The volume differences on the different channels are quite large

 so that's basically its first. sound is just a clean sound where I have added compression which you don't get from the panel here and I've set up a whole reverb which you can set up in the app. it does three different types of reverb if I remember correctly and I have delay which I'm also kind of tweet in the act and I've changed the cab because you can change the cab type with all of these. So I've changed that to a four by twelve British type thing

 So I've gone through those and kind of programmed five sounds that I thought were the better ones. the best ones! I could get out of the different modes so you have clean if crunch of lead, high gain and specials are going through all those with the boutique and modern and programmed five sounds. now. In addition, I'll show you a couple of other features in the app and it also has a few factory presets which I'll check out a couple of them

Tl;dr: I'm interested in a practice amp and would love some feedback on a few options that seem to keep coming up:

1. Yamah THR10II series 
2. Boss Katana-Air 
3. Blackstar ID:Core BEAM

Anyone have experience/recommendations here? At a high level, I'm looking for: 

1. Good tone (naturally!) that is easy to get. I'm not a gearhead. I do not need 100s upon 100s of customization options. So long as I can get blues, rock/metal, and basic clean tones, with some nice reverb/delay, I am good to go. 
2. Convenience of use: small size and wireless functionality. The ability to use with a looper for practice would be great 
3. Ideally under $500, but I have some flex in the budget 

As context, I would only be using this for practice, primarily in my home office. I live in a rowhouse and mostly practice after my wife goes to bed, so being able to sound good at a low volume is a premium. 

Playing along with backing tracks/songs/a looper pedal is also important. 

Nice, but not deal breakers: the idea of being able to have wireless functionality is very appealing--I have a small office and keeping cable clutter down would be useful. Not sure if the built in wireless features are more of an upsell, given that I can buy a separate receiver/transmitter. I'm also curious if people find portability useful. I know the Yamaha series has a few with rechargeable batteries, which may be useful when I pop over to a friend's to play. Back when I started playing (many years ago), battery powered was synonymous with poor quality. It seems like that has changed lately.

[QUESTION][GEAR] Practice amps: Yamah THR vs Boss Katana-Air vs Blackstar ID:Core

 I upgraded to the latest software, which gives you the "open" and "focused" modes, which go a long way to helping you get usable tones, but, despite going through all the cabs in each speaker mode and amp model, it either sounds muffled, like a towel covering the speaker, or has a really strange sizzle to it you can't EQ out.  Objectively, if I didn't buy the Katana Air 2 weeks after, and have a bit of time with both, I may not have noticed, but that combined with the VERY high price, makes this a no-go. The Katana Air speakers are definitely not as impressive, but it actually sounds like a real amp, you just plug in and go. The THR instantly inspires you to dig in to try to "fix" the sound, rather than play

Additionally, the Boss wireless system has better latency, and battery life

YAMAHA THR-II Amps - NEW - BIGGER, BETTER & WIRELESS!

I have a Yamaha thr 10 ii and it's pretty great for playing in an apartment. Used to have a tweed blues Jr and while the Yamaha isn't quite as good as a true tube amp - it's pretty darn close and sounds great at low volumes (actually gets a lot louder than I expected too without getting distorted).

Hi all - I’m looking for suggestions on a amp that is good to use in a dorm room. I already have a Vox plugin for headphones but I want something that I can just jam w/o headphones.

Not interested in those tiny 3W amps that Orange or Marshall have, just looking for something that has good sound/controls &amp; is an appropriate size for a dorm room. 

Budget is $200 max, however will consider a little higher

[GEAR] Suggestions for a practice amp for a college dorm room

 If you are looking for a Nashville 80's and 90's twang, you can get close but you will miss the mark. Other tones are more easily achieved. But I spend about half my time in Twangland. Your mileage may vary

 Since the iPad app works, this is less of an issue that it could be. On the other hand, it's something else that detracts from the experience of using the amp to its fullest.  It's a solid amp, but the removal of some of the effects and its Windows connectivity issue make it less for me.

This would be a five star review except for the choice that Yamaha made in removing the rack compressor (much finer control over the compressor) and in removing the delay effect. I like this amp. But, the compressor has too much attack for my taste. The finer control offered by the compressor in the previous models suit my needs better

More amp models, fewer effects options.

 So as I said, two of these models are wireless ready so they actually have the Line 6 relay system built in the receiver and you just buy the book separately that charges on the input socket and just pull it out, plug it into guitar scans all the frequencies, picks the right one and you're good to go. So we're gonna start with just a real nice, basic, clean sound. a little bit of reverb and it sounds like this: [Music] Second preset I've gone to the boutique crunch setting, so a little bit more gain and you get that kind of nice middle II just on the edge of breakup kind of thing responds really well to Guitar Dynamics as well. So [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Four preset three: I've got kind of a British El34 base down and this really shows off how the VCM modeling works

 a little bit of reverb and it sounds like this: [Music] Second preset I've gone to the boutique crunch setting, so a little bit more gain and you get that kind of nice middle II just on the edge of breakup kind of thing responds really well to Guitar Dynamics as well.  It sounds like a really high-quality hi-fi. You couple that with the VC em modeling and this gave you an incredible playing experience. The original concept was th L was your third amp so you have your kind of valve head and cab and combo and these are the kind of things you dig with big pedal board, but it's kind of a pain to get back from the gig, bring that in a house and set everything up just for a practice. Their balancing levels with your stereo and your amps was kind of a pain

Hi all.  I've been learning acoustic guitar since April and have decided to try out electric guitars as well.  My dad's shipping me his old Fender Stratocaster but he doesn't have the amp anymore so I'll need to get one separately. I'm just going to be practicing in my living room so it doesn't need to be gig-quality or especially loud, but it should be good enough that I won't feel the need to upgrade after a month or two of practice.  I'd rather just buy one amp that will keep up as I improve.  I jump around genres a lot, too, so the amp shouldn't be specialized.

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably-priced amp for a Fender Strat?  I don't have a strict budget here though obviously I'd prefer to pay less.  Thanks!

 And as I said, I guess the proof is in the pudding and the fact that I found myself playing infinitely more guitar around the house and practicing actually practicing is testament how good and inspiring this thing sounds. Obviously runs off a battery as well, so if you're looking to take this out, busking, it would be a very good application for it and also a fuse in the line 6g T10 relay. You can actually use this wirelessly as well. There's a whole host of applications for this which I would argue are very inspiring and as I said in a few weeks that I've had this now I've got hell of a lot in use out of it
