 I usually add the low-cut in post as well as adding some compression to the sound so I don't necessarily use the built-in low-cut filter. With the Zoom H1 you can also get a laptop driver and with a microphone holder, tripod or a shock mount you suddenly have a pretty competent podcast microphone. Or a very good microphone for either streaming, video calls or other types of content creation. As a youtuber I need something I can always bring with me under recording as well as part of my editing workflow

 As far as specification goes this is a powerful recorder with excellent built-in stereo microphones. With a few modifications this could be a very good run and gun podcast microphone. With the wonderful XY microphones capturing the surroundings and stereo and mono for the vocals for an interview. Which is very good for creating the feeling for the listener to actually be there

Need a decent, affordable microphone that will pickup voices in very loud festival environments

 TESTING NORMAL VOICE AT 84” AND 36” FROM MICS  I tested it against another small digital recorder I have, an old Sony ICD MX20, which produces very good basic recordings, and would probably be considered to be in the same basic price range. I tested the recorders’ built-in mics by speaking at a normal voice 84” away then 36” away, with the mics facing me, turned to the side, and then facing away from me. I did these tests with the recorders a few inches above floor level while I was standing than again when I was at a lower level (on my knees). I put the recordings on the Adobe Audition digital editing program on my PC

 Input and output levels are adjustable.  I. TESTING NORMAL VOICE AT 84” AND 36” FROM MICS  I tested it against another small digital recorder I have, an old Sony ICD MX20, which produces very good basic recordings, and would probably be considered to be in the same basic price range.  The unit is small and lightweight, only taking one battery to operate. Using the audio input jack, I found I could get a little over 5 hours of record time with a standard AA battery before it drained and the recording stopped. (I never had a chance to determine the battery life using the built-in microphones.) 5

I can use my phone to record, but the quality isn't always great and sometimes it takes me too long fumbling around with my phone to get good candid conversations. I also have the desire to document my own learnings and travels, but sometimes I'm too tired to sit down and write down the events of the day. For that reason I'd also like to use it to record myself for future reference. Since I'm recording my loved ones before they pass, I want the sound quality to be at least reasonable so that their voices are clear for my children and future grandchildren.

I've seen a lot of journalists and podcasters on the street bring portable digital recording devices to get soundbites for their programs and I think a device like that would be great for what I want to do. So I'm coming to the experts to see if they can lend their expertise. I see some recorders that look good on Amazon, but I was wondering what opinions journalists would have compared to just random Amazon customers. I'm flexible on price range as long as it's not more than a few hundred dollars.

Good Portable Microphone for Interviews &amp; Audio Self-Reflection Journals?

 So let me quickly show you my settings and explain why I use them. The sampling rate and bit depth I have set to 48k and 24bit. This way the Zoom H1n will record a very high quality WAV file to get the best sound quality possible. The low cut is set to 80 hertz

 Okay back to topic. To make the recording sound this good I actually have another trick up my sleeve and I will show it to you. The H1n actually has two microphone capsules and they are placed in an XY stereo configuration. This way the H1n records in stereo which is usually great because it captures more of the ambience and you get a more spacious sound

 I got the H1n's mics placed about well 10 centimeters or about 4 inches away from my mouth. And as you can see I place a pop filter in front of the H1n because the H1n's microphones are really really sensitive to wind or plosives. And I really have to say this up front, if you are planning to use the H1n for any kind of voiceover work you really do need a pop filter. Otherwise it will sound like this
