I'm planning to purchase my first hammock camping setup.  I've done a fair amount of backpacking with a tent, and I've just never slept well.  I'm hoping that I'll be able to get more rest in a hammock, though I haven't actually tried it.  We have an Eno for lounging in the back yard, but it's not really meant for diagonal lay sleeping

  I want to purchase a hammock, suspension, tarp, and underquilt and keep it as light as my tent setup which comes up to around 4.6 pounds (Marmot Tungsten + Thermarest Prolite).  I'm fortunate to not be worried too much about cost, but of course I don't want to just throw away money.  My primary concerns are comfort, warmth, and weight

6oz HyperD, 1.7oz MTN, or 1.8oz Airwave?  Is there any benefit in going to double-layer for better wind protection, warmth, and firmer lay?  If it doesn't provide wind protection and warmth, should I just go to a heavier fabric for a firmer lay?

 You could use a single layer hammock, but if should squeeze is an issue you might want to step up to a heavier weight fabric such as 2.2 or 2.4.

I also prefer a hammock that is atleast 62 inches wide. Anything more narrow than that and I feel squeezed in. It can sometimes be tricky to find wide hammocks in heavier weight fabric, but Dream hammock does sell them. I think all of Dutch's wide hammocks are 1

I'm also looking at the chinook system they have of a under layer to hold a quilt and over layer to replace bugnet. 

Does anyone have any ideas for big guy stuff. Or other hammock systems I should look at? I like the idea of getting a system from one place, it will all hopefully zip together.

.  I just upgraded and got a dream hammock sparrow that arrived to me a month ago. I got both the overcover and bug net, both which zip into the sides of the hammock (only one at a time, not both at same time), which I really like.

If you are an average weight person and planning to use underquilts as your primary insulation below the hammock, I don't see any point to carrying the extra weight of the double layer.

- You are a heavy person who needs additional strength in the cloth that supports your weight

I’m trying to figure out what hammock to pick up for camping to upgrade my eno double nest. I’m tied between a Hennessy hammock (perhaps the jungle XL) or a hammock gear circadian pro.

The Hennessy hammocks have the two layer system so you can put a sleeping pad in between the layers for warmer nights. I like this feature, but I know many here dislike Hennessy and it comes at a large cost premium.

How useful do you think the double layer is?

Double layered hammock vs single layered

..  Warbonnet Blackbird XLC with their Wookie UQ rated at 0 degrees along with an UQP made by 2QZQ - then I use my Outdoor Vitals Summit series -15 down bag as a top quilt.

. wearing a good down jacket is also a must.  I may also slide a Thermarest NeoXtherm Max pad in between the double layer.

No more cold bottom, what is your underquilt?

 you want to try to stop the convection from stealing the heat away, so you are comfortable. If you have down or similar it will compress under you can be cold. If you can get enough material under you it will work. Your feet and lower legs are less important than your torso

 This for me is perfect. I don’t need a pillow in my hammock, my head is where I like it. Not too high, not too low.

Hey guys! Im done with the noob gear that I have for hammocking and am looking to get a whole new set up. The only problem Is I dont know what I want. Ive been mooved by the whole UL movement and am trying to get things that are light weight but will last. The biggest issue im having is figuring out what kind of sleep system/insulation I want/need. 

Hammock: The Hammock I have now (Equip double) I could never get into a comfortable diagonal lay without feeling like the sides of the hammock were straining my neck and forcing my legs back in. Laying strait seemed to be the only way I could fit in my UQ and still feel comfy though I would consistently have issues with my knees hurting since I was in the banana shape. I would usually remedy this with putting something under my knees which worked great. This leads me to believe that a smaller hammock with less slack might be ok for me especially since they will be lighter weight as well. Something like the hummingbird single+ or the Wise Owl (bare bones) seem like a good place to start? They are both around 9 ft in length and 400-450 weight capacity ( I'm 5'3 and weigh about 180 plus or minus a cheeseburger). It seems like a good idea in my head but so do all my ideas. Practicality from someone who has this set up or has done this set up whould be very much appreciated. Dont wabt to go spend a tone of money on something that doesn't work. Also if there is a diagonal hammock out there specifically built to be diagonal without it being a nightmare for my neck, recommendations are always welcome.

UQ and Top quilt: I sort of BYOG on this one using 3 quilts I got from Costco. I use 2 as my UQ (wide not long so equivalent to a 3/4s UQ) and 1 as my TQ just to lay on top of me as I sleep. I will say now that this setup is NOT a 4 season setup and is pushing 3 season though I will say I never once got a cold butt while camping, just cold feet 😩. I know for a fact that om gonna change out my top quilt for something a little warmer. I'm just curious if I should take it a step further and turn my top quilt into a Peapod system since im looking at doing a strait lay set up anyway. Ive been looking at the burrow custom from HG with the zipper foot box and wide and just mod it a bit. Has anyone done this with this kind of set up I mean? I figure I could just carry the one quilt I use as a TQ now to fill the dead air since it packs down so small but I dont want to go out a buy a $300 top quilt just for this to not work. Main reason I'm looking to converting rather than picking up something like the 1) Hyke and Blyke peapod or the 2) Outdoor vitals, I need something that is gonna keep me warm all night long and they don't seem to have the greatest reviews. Maybe its just the design of peapod overall but I figured I see what you guys think. HG's burrow looks like a great hammock and it can be converted for ground which is great. I'm more than happy to carry both Top and Bottom quilts but just want to exhaust all ideas before pulling the trigger on something so expensive haha.

  Top notch craftsmanship, super comfortable fabrics (dream tex nylon) and has a ton of accessories to fit whatever type of hammocking youre into.  Super recommend.

2021 hammock recommendations? Upgrading from an Eno

I am your size - just go buy a Warbonnet blackbird XLC double layer and you will be safe and HAPPY…. You wanna lay like a banana and not be happy and buy the Eno and save a couple bucks. But if you were serious about actually laying flat and feeling great and a hammock Warbonnet has hit the ball out of the park with the black bird XLC

I was thinking of an eno hammock setup but I hear they are shorter and have seen that 11 foot hammocks are recommended any thoughts on what I should go with a 75$ dollar max for the hammock

Wanting advice on a hammock setup

 Steer clear of Dutch - his hammocks are overpriced and he nickel and dimes his customers on options that other vendors include for less money.

 I can say that a *longer* hammock is more comfortable than a shorter one. I made a 12.5' one for a trial and it was more comfy than my 11' Blackbird.

That being said, I ran into a few different problems. Namely, I have broad shoulders, weigh 240 pounds and I am 6ft. I stayed in an older Hennesey and although I enjoyed the experience it felt like my shoulders were squeezed pretty tightly.  Additionally, I camp in Minnesota so weather can vary quite a bit, below -30 to above 100. I'd like to get a few different opinions. 

1) Do you recommend the XLC, or the Wide Chameleon for me? 

2) Am I able to get a -20 UQ and just hang it lower when its warmer (I probably won't use it above 50 degrees)?  


I would like to be able to use my gear all year this year (1 spring trip, 2 summer trips, 5 fall trips, 2 winter trips). What should I buy?
