 I really think that having a built-in battery would for me have pushed the digitone from a really really great device to one of my favorites. It is really really great. Don'T get me wrong, but i've found that having to plug it in is just like an extra step that i feel like stands between me and making music on it and i'm more likely to reach for something like the deluge or the yamaha qy. 70

The heat death of the universe is approaching on schedule, so we have to be discerning customers when it comes to buying music gear, and to that end i wanted to talk about the electron digitone and whether i think it's worth its asking price, which, at the time That i was writing the script for this. Video was at around 650 at the lowest

 The first thing is that, while it is fine to like want a device like this, neither you nor i need the electron digitone to make music. If you're new to or thinking about getting into music production, i would suggest instead, starting with a daw and some free synth plugins. I'Ve made a video about it, shameless self promotion, and that way you can get started without syncing like a lot of money into it, and then god forbid, finding out that you bought a device that just totally does not suit you, and the second thing is that Is it worth it and is it good, are totally different questions? I think the electron digitone is completely amazing, but is it 650 worth of amazing? The answer is going to vary depending on the person and that's why we're going to talk about it? The first thing that i noticed about the digitone, even before i turned it on, was that the build quality is really really phenomenal. The chassis is made out of metal, the buttons are all really nice and clicky, and the knobs have the perfect amount of resistance to them

 When the digitone is turned on, you can see the screen, which is really nice and sharp and beautiful unless you hate the color yellow. As far as sound goes, the digitone is a much different beast from an analog or analog modeling synthesizer you can get warm sounds out of it, but in my experience the digitone's happy space seems to be more cold and metallic and experimental. The digitone uses fm synthesis, which is a method of sound generation whereby you have sine waves that you hear, which are called carriers sine waves that you don't, which are called modulators, and you use the modulators to modulate. I'M saying the word modulate a lot

Is The Elektron Digitone Worth It?

While I do still love good analog bass, I've started exploring FM synthesis as a bass instrument. My go-to now is the Elektron Digitone, but I've also used the Volca FM for this. There's a quality to FM as bass that is really gripping and exciting to me, perhaps because the sound is just less familiar.

Have you played with sequencing the 3 osc on the Volca Bass independently? That plus some portamento makes a pretty unique sound. Can't be done over MIDI unfortunately, so it's usefulness is limited.

I agree that the Volca Bass is pretty 'basic' (ha, get it?). So that's when I use it, when I want a classic bass sound.

So the Volca series is becoming somewhat of a classic, and the Bass is really a gem for a beginner. But after a while it underperforms and is to dull and limited (for me at least). I was pondering on where to go next without setting my bank account on fire. my 2 best options were the Waldorf Rocket and the Korg Monologue. Both really nice, much more versitile than the Volca, but I really couldn't decide.   


eventually, I went for Korg again, and I'm loving every minute of it. That lil oscilloscope is the sutest thing and it just sounds really really good. I found the monologue to be richer and more versitile, which is perfect for a main/base mono synth in a full setup. I find the Rocket to be more of a special tool that you can use to dazzle the listener with, but it had less basic features, which made it a bit hard to rely on.

Where you should go after you're done with the Volca Bass:

I’d image you buy one and learn it then the other adds a nice upgrade and both can sit nicely in the corner of a room with some headphones?

 What i experienced by using such a limited setup is that i really at first try to make all these sounds really stand out and to make them sound. The best that it's possible, but also that, due to the reason that i have only these sounds available, or only four tracks available, they cut very much more through the mix and really um yeah you get all their delay sounds all of their reverb sounds um. You just hear a lot more of these sounds and what they are doing and the mix doesn't end up too muddy. And i i myself find it easier to master the whole thing and to do the mix down just within the digitone and then just go straight to the mastering process and to get some results that i really like and that i can share with the community

 Sometimes i use two leads. Sometimes i use two arps, but that's in general, the setup and um.  That'S always changing, and this way you can bring a lot of interest to your music reason. Number three is general sound and connectivity. I think the digitone as a whole sounds just really really good as a synthesizer, no matter, if you just use the regular outs or if you use the headphone out or if you use it via overbridge but um, it really really has a great sound character and Something that is good to use in so many different ways you can, for example, craft very great melodic sounds on the diggy tone. You can also craft very, very great percussive sounds you also have great sounding effects that i really like

 Reason number four on my list is sound design. I think the sound design options that you have on the digitone are really really great. Of course, this device cannot be also due to its form factor. It cannot be compared, for example, to a dx7, but apart from that, i think the sound synthesis engine in all is limited, but really really intelligent

 So, let's just deconstruct that on the first layer I've got this brass sampled I should mention we can actually double tap on these buttons to switch layers on and off. So we select layer one and we're just listening to loud one. This also works on the effects as well. We'Ve got double tap, which is kind of useful, so layer, one is basically single multi sample, which is trombone and octave

 We'Ve got filters, we got Ella phones when it got envelopes, there's a lot of other stuff inside. So let's just take a look at the connections about 12 volt DC power supply, which is included power switch. This does have the annoying off after 4 hours leaving set in the settings MIDI in and out on, standard MIDI, jacks, USB MIDI, damper, pedal, left and right. Court reject out ports and a dedicate head for an output which doesn't appear to have its own volume level, and that's it for your connections

 So that'll be this guy, which it's quite skinny: it's not what you call the biggest kind of girthier sample. Then on the next layer, I've got just a regular wave shape: [ Music ], that's just a wave. So what I'm actually doing is I'm modulating this? The amplitude and giving that kind of movement - let's come back to this, then by layer, see, is triggered only when I hit hard enough. So it brings in this to this temp and then lad D adds this temp role

 I can change the filter in the saw order by different kinds, hit enter to apply, and then I can come back and I can have. The collection plug in guru did a load of science for this there's original wave stations and the new wave stay here enter. I mean, but this is a lot of button, presses to kind of filter out and said to Al this category, blah blah blah blah. If we come back to it being a wave sequence then hit the list of available waves, we've got all sequences and you can see the various steps on there

Sonic LAB - Korg Wavestate Review

 The first page sets the loop start and end points, and overall Lane start and end points and how many repeats it has. Generally speaking, there are obviously exceptions and other parameters, and then the third page to the right of the middle page, has Lane utilities so again for each of the lanes. It'S always laying utilities. On page three, this lets you cut steps, copy, paste, insert steps and change the lane length

 Now I've got this mod wheel, controlling a filter cutoff. If I hit the mod matrix button again, I can view this one mod slot that I have in my matrix and add an intensity source to it as well. So let's go ahead and go to this parameter. If I hit enter, I get a pop-up that lets me select multiple other mod sources that I can go back and forth here, or just simply press the button or turn the knob it'll jump directly to the parameter that I want, which is the filter LFO and If I hit enter, I now have these two sources: the mod wheel and the filter LFO, impacting the filter cutoff

 Should here planning now you've got earphones on it's at a filter. You can change the start phase of the LFO at an offset to change the curve fade it in which is cool and you've got all these shapes usual suspects, a guitar shape for pitch bends options. These can be tempo synced. They reduce the frequency just a bit with random timing, few random options and smooth you can create vibrato with the pitch envelope

 There are currently no plans for creating a full-fledged companion. App for editing sounds the biggest feature on my wish list. Is the ability to load my own samples into wave state which currently isn't possible again here to Cork, says: that's not on the roadmap at least not now. There are plenty of sounds on board, so there's a good likelihood, you'll find what you're looking for or something similar, but obviously that doesn't compare to the ability to load in your own samples

problems first it was notoriously

difficult to program and second its
