I love the pack. It is light and roomy. But my first hike using it, 4 days on the AT, the hydration area zipper proved defective and it began to tear at the edge where the bottom scuff pad joins the pack. I am returning it

About the brand: I can recommend the smaller Osprey bags but I haven't been especially happy with the Aether 70, and I've had broken zips on several Osprey bags. They do have a great lifetime warranty, which is handy if you've got an Osprey returns facility nearby or can DIY repairs with spare parts they'll send, but I'd look at other brands too.

I will say if you’re the type who likes to hike without a shirt, I wouldn’t recommend it with this pack. Without a frame and net to keep the physical pack off your back, the bag will end up rubbing your low back and cause chaffing.. Also if you sweat a lot, as I did on my thru hike of the AT, your sweat will seep through the bag because the plastic back support insert has holes in it (to save weight presumably) and condensation will build between the inside of your bag and your weatherproof pack liner (construction grade contractor trash bag)

It is indeed heavy as other folks have mentioned, but the suspension is top notch and it doesn’t carry heavier on your back, in my opinion. If you’re carrying extra gear/weight from your wife, you’ll appreciate the beefier suspension. The daypack lid is a great feature—some say it’s a gimmick, but I’ve used it quite a bit for day hikes, summits, and fetching water for camp.

The 2 front straps are just too short. They don’t even fit a regular Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol Sleeping Pad. I am attaching 2 more straps to carry while leaving the 2 original unused (adding more weight). The z straps on the sides are not as effective as 2 independent buckled straps for attaching heavy snowshoes (but I will make it work)
