Based on other reviews as well as the tech specs of this pack I bought this for my 10 yr old who had a variety of adventures this summer! She used this as her carry-on for a trip to Southeast Asia - carried all her on-the-plane activities and then became her day-pack for day trips as well as her 'suitcase' for a 5 day river trip in Sarawak. She then used it as a full-bore backpack on our back-country trip in Glacier. She was able to carry her sleeping bag, crazy creek chair, and some clothes in the main compartment as well as various daily needs e.g

Great for kids beginning backpacking pack!

 Success!!! Reference child is 46 inches and weighs about 50lbs and the adjustments are at the minimum, construction is good, should last him a couple of years just long enough to break in my second child ;-)  Remember, when introducing children to backpacking start short, keep the pack light (rule of thumb keep the pack under 20% of their body weight), take frequent breaks and above all have fun!  Happy trails!

First off, this pack is kind of expensive for a kids pack but it is the only pack that I found that has a suspension system.  It keeps the weight off my boy's shoulders and puts it where it belongs, on his hips. He was using a school type backpack before I bought him this and with 5-8lbs would tell me his shoulders hurt after about a mile or two.  Since using this we've been on a few 4-6 mile hikes and I don't hear anything about sore shoulders with about 10lbs

 The side pocket is several inches shorter. This is enough of a difference that when I pick up the pack, my water often falls out.

The old version had a zipper pocket in the interior of the pack’s body. This is the feature I'm missing most. The new design has no good place to put my wallet and keys. I don't want those on an exterior pocket, as those pockets contain things I want to access during the hike (sunscreen, food); nor do these pockets have key loops (unlike the older version, where every pocket had a key loop)

The large interior if this pack does have a keep loop, but it leaves keys jangling in the body of the pack.

For context, what I want out of this pack is to use it on long day hikes (8 - 14 miles) with a lot of elevation gain. I carry something like the Ten Essentials. I don't use a bladder; both side pockets carry water.

Nice Pack with Mediocre Pocket Design

  I loved the bungee that held my hiking poles in place. Attaching my poles was pretty easy and they felt pretty secure.  The pack sat nicely on my back. Being a larger busted woman I appreciated how the chest straps fit across my chest

 The main compartment itself was deep and voluminous having a simple cinch that efficiently closed it up, protecting the contents from accidental spill. It did take me a minute to figure out how to work it but once I realized I didn’t need to press a tab and it closed and opened by simply pulling on the cinch string, getting in and out of the main compartment was a breeze.  I loved the bungee that held my hiking poles in place. Attaching my poles was pretty easy and they felt pretty secure

 It carried all the things I needed for a simple out and back hike. Logging in just at 4 miles and the Flash held my Jacket, snacks, a hat and my phone, with ease. The side pockets function great holding a full-size nalgene on one side and my shades and their case on the other. The side zipper with extra pocket was perfect for my wallet and my pocket knife

Perfect Everyday Bag

 Cons: The straps are not comfortable. They are rather thin in width and made of a netted material that’s kind of scratchy. I wore this backpack in the hot sun while wearing tank tops and I personally didn’t like the way the straps felt on my skin. When I packed the bag with heavy items, the straps rubbed my shoulder and it felt uncomfortable

  Size and Layout: Both backpacks have the exact same layout. The Matador Daylite's stuffsack is slightly smaller, which I've actually found makes it difficult to get the backpack in (must be rolled a very specific way). The 4Monster's stuffsack is slightly larger, which makes packing much easier. Note that both backpacks can compress down to the same size; it's just the stuffsack that is different

 However, if you need your backpack to be waterproof, I would recommend the Matador Daylite for its superior waterproof zippers.

I wouldn't use this for hiking, we have a better backpack for that, but that's not what I bought it for.  It's perfect as a commute bag, especially when you will only need it full when going and not when returning (or vice versa.) I also like that the bag itself adds practically no weight to whatever you're carrying.  I've used packable shopping bags before this, and it's very similar, but seems a lot sturdier and definitely more comfortable since the weight can be distributed better
