 I'm kidding. I hope in today's video I'm going to review the Acai Lunar, the 225 espresso scale that I've talked about for many, many months now about it being incredibly overpriced. Was I wrong about it? And is this actually worth the money? [Music] Okay, so some quick disclaimers: I did not get this for free. I did pay for it myself, but I did have a 100 gift card, so I got this for just 125 out of pocket versus the retail price of 225

 and you have my favorite mode and the one I use the most which is the Auto Tear Auto Start Timer mode. Okay, so I will admit that using the Lunar has improved my workflow, especially the auto tear auto start timer mode that I mentioned earlier. Nowadays I just dose my beams with the normal weighing mode and then immediately move on to that smart mode. the built-in timer, the auto tearing, and the auto stopping is all a nice to have feature, especially now that I no longer need to pull out my phone to time a shot

 At the time of this review, I have owned and used the Lunar almost daily at home for about two months. So as always, let's first start with the build quality out of the box. I was immediately surprised by just how small this scale is, especially compared to the Pearl S that I also reviewed in the box. You also get a heat resistant pad, a 100 gram calibration weight, and you also get two rubber strips that you have to install yourself if you choose to use it on the back of the scale, which does add some nice grip and prevents the bottom metal on metal contact with the drip tray

My guy's birthday is coming up. He’s definitely the type that if he wants something, he’ll just get it himself - rarely would he wait long enough for birthday or christmas come around to be gifted something, which makes it hard to find him gifts!

He’s been a longtime coffee lover and new-er espresso convert, after he was given the Breville Barista Express a while back. He has jumped into this world FULLY and immediately went and got a lot of the accessories that I often see being recommended as gifts - bottomless portafilter, tamper, dosing cup, dosing funnel, black silicone mat. 

We also have TONS of ways already to make coffee that we cycle through - drip, pour over, moka pot, french press, aeropress. We even have some ‘good’ instant coffee to make that trendy whip coffee (dalgona). For grinders, we use the built in on the BBE for espresso and a basic ol' cuisinart burr grinder for everything else.

I’d rather not just get him some coffee beans or another cup/mug.

So… what do you get the guy who has everything?? Any novelty items that would be really cool conversation starters/for him to show off to friends? Some cool gorgeous statement piece? Or, any must-haves that you think we’re missing? 

Roasting his own beans is something he’s mentioned wanting to try before - is there a great ‘entry’/enough to get you started type gift that could be good for that? 

Budget is probably under $300

What do you get the guy who has everything?

compact and good physical design; worthless apps and additional 'smart' functionality; expensive

 well. My argument here is that you should be starting the timer when you first flip the switch or pull the lever. The time in between starting the machine and first drip can also vary, so I think that this function is useless, as you should definitely be measuring the time in between that as well. Okay, what else does the Lunar have an auto tear and auto start timer mode? Time begins when an item is placed on the scale

 Well, first, it looks like it has a timer. That's pretty useful alternatively. Okay, so what else does the Lunar have? A flow mode? A timer mode that starts and auto tears when espresso flow is detected. Okay, uh

 I do think that they make quality scales, and I particularly like the Aka Pearl for pour overs, but in my opinion, you absolutely do not need to be dropping over two 200 for their espresso scale. In fact, you don't need to be spending more than just 12 bucks and that's where this comes in. This is the espresso scale that I've been using for nearly 10 months now and it costs just 12 bucks. this scale comes from a company called Greater Goods on Amazon

 Next function can actually hold down the power button. It's going to bring you over into the timer and the grams. So timer on this side crams On this side. It's meant to kind of count up your shot so you'll count upwards as the shop pulls and you can put your shot glass on there and it will kind of weigh the output

 I'm looking for about 18 grams. I'll take it I'll take it pretty close, all right. Lock it into place here and get my shot picture here. Let it auto tear start my shot

 They've since updated the Pearl to have a few of those features as well, but the size of the Lunar makes it a lot better for fitting under the portafilter of your machine. So essentially the first function here is going to be your grams. This one only does grams. So basically put in your receptacle, tear it out and then weight down to the tenth of a gram

 so using this scale and using any really precise scale will help you. kind of dial this in exactly the way you want, helps you get a little bit closer to an exact shot. Since espresso is such a small volume, it's more important to have precision. so every sip tastes good

After a LOT of reading through posts both here and elsewhere, I have narrowed my choices down to one of the following Baratza grinders: 

• Sette 30 

• Sette 270

• Sette 270Wi

I am mainly a latte drinker so my shots do not need to be “perfect”, as I know the milk helps cover up imperfections. I went cheap on the espresso machine (Calphalon TempIQ) and have been using pre-ground Illy espresso. It makes an adequate latte, but I would like to improve where I can, so getting a good grinder is my next step.

Ideally, I’d like to spend as little as possible (which would be the Sette 30). I don’t mind spending more for the 270 or 270Wi if it is worth the extra $. 

I’m looking for the most user-friendly (ease of use, easy to clean, etc) grinder. I’ve seen the 270 pop up a lot on here, so I’m figuring that would probably be the best option for me.

Has anyone tried the 270Wi, and if so, is it worth getting it over the 270?

Just a guy who knows nothing about coffee Looking to buy a grinder and a scale for my wife as a gift. After doing some research I think the Eureka Mignon Silenzio grinder and the Acaia Linar scale would be a great combo. We currently just have a cheap espresso maker but plan to upgrade that in the next year or so. Is that a good combo? Is there a way to get the portafilter onto the scale to weigh as she grinds? I’d like to set her up with a good scale and grinder combo. She single doses and sticks to espresso mostly.
