Acer Predator Z1 (Z271) Review

 If it had arrived in flawless condition and obtained full 100 hz overclock, it would have been an easy 5 out of 5 stars regardless of the price. Fortunately, I was able to avoid some of the very serious problems with the early samples, so I am thankful for that. However, I deducted 1 star for the blemish on bezel, the kludgy menu buttons, and the 95 hz max refresh rate overclock. I think I am being generous only deducting 1 star for all of those issues

  I would also throw in that, in my opinion, 1440p is the sweet spot resolution right now for current hardware standard relative to game performance. Obviously that will change once we start seeing Displayport 1.3 adopted so 4k won't be bottlenecked at 60hz, but today 1440p offers the best combination of resolution and high frame rates.  In conclusion, I feel like i didn't lose the monitor lottery, but I didn't win it either, so I am giving 3 out of 5 stars

 The point of mentioning the 4K is that many who look at this are possibly also thinking of buying a standard 3840x2160 panel, since it takes about as much GPU juice to drive 4K 60fps as it does to drive 3440x1440 at 100fps. If you're looking for advice, buy the Acer X34. The difference in resolution is noticeable, though perhaps only because I've spent the last 2 years at 4K, but the immersiveness of the 21:9 aspect ratio combined with the buttery smoothness of high (80+) frame rates with G-Sync more than makes up for it. And, to be honest, it isn't THAT noticeable in games

  After searching for dead pixels and backlight bleed, I went into the OSD to attempt to overclock (which is a bit of a pain to navigate), and this is where I encountered my first real problem with the monitor. It's advertised as overclockable to 100Hz, but what you find out when you read the manual and go to Acer for support is that they don't guarantee each panel can overclock to that refresh rate. Your mileage may vary. I overclocked to 100Hz in the panel's OSD, and then opened NVIDIA Control Panel to change the active refresh rate, but after doing that the panel wouldn't refresh at 100Hz

 The difference in resolution is noticeable, though perhaps only because I've spent the last 2 years at 4K, but the immersiveness of the 21:9 aspect ratio combined with the buttery smoothness of high (80+) frame rates with G-Sync more than makes up for it. And, to be honest, it isn't THAT noticeable in games. I notice the difference more on my desktop, since the icons are automatically larger and spaced further apart. I've used this for only a few days, and can already tell that not only will this be my monitor for the foreseeable future, but I won't go back to 2160p until they make a 21:9 model that is 1) an IPS panel, 2) >80Hz refresh rate, 3) with G-Sync

The X34 Lottery: mind-blowing, if you can get a winner

 There's also the issue of the stand itself. You see, the stand mount only permits up-down monitor movement - the thing won't swivel. That is crazy annoying, especially when one considers that it's a curved screen and, as a result, you might want them to sit at a bit of an angle. No dice

 And you might think to yourself, "but Darth, it's just leg colours", and you'd be right. Except when you pay almost $1,250 per monitor, you expect it exactly like you want it. There's a slightly smaller gripe in the aesthetic front where the "Predator" logo on the front doesn't light up. Seems like it should

 Unfortunately, they're all only about 4 feet long. Given how large the monitor is, the odds are your case is going to be a good deal further away than that, which means they're essentially useless and you'll have to go out and buy longer cables.  I'm no ASUS fanboy, but their ROG design is hands-down better than the Acer's, both from aesthetics as well as function. I hate that the ASUS doesn't have the Gamma button, but other tools can make up for that

 There's a slightly smaller gripe in the aesthetic front where the "Predator" logo on the front doesn't light up. Seems like it should.  But that's not the end of it. Were it just stand legs, I'd likely figure my grouchiness is just the result of my beloved Princess dying far too soon and work through it

It's the nicest monitor I've ever seen, and yet I'm immensely disappointed

 Resolution, 3440 X 1440 (Tons of screen estate) 4. Speed (100Hz refresh rate + 4ms response time) 5. Stand adjustment options (height and tilt) 6. Heavy base (next to no wobble)  Cons: 1

Some minor flaws, fantastic monitor otherwise!

 the curve is modest, not too much not too little it's good overall but you have to sit at a very specific angle to fully experience it (52% lean to the left)  in general, ultra wide is a more immersive experience and it will benefit you in FPS shooters and RTS games (that is if they support the 21:9 aspect ratio, overwatch does support but starcraft 2 doesn't for "balance reasons") but in singleplayer or supported multiplayer, the 21:9 aspect ratio DOES give you an advantage so keep that in mind...  second: the monitor, my my what a lovely sight it is to behold, the frameless design fits it perfectly but it is nearly impossable to move the monitor without stamping it with any finger print residue but hey, you can clean it later

 color accuracy is high not adobe high but high enough you can appriciate CGI cinematics in their full glory (try legacy of the void cinematic on it)  now HZ, you know this monitor is a gamble right? but mine got 100HZ working fine but be warned, Acer does not guarantee a return if you're not getting 100HZ, their minimum is 75HZ so pray to the gods you won't get screwed, i bought mine opened but unused so i told the store to check the monitor thoroughly and it passed all my expectations  the reason i'm giving this a 4 star and not 5 is because: the cable bundled in is short Asf, when i buy something this expensive i expect to receive proper peripherals second, the Buttons on the monitor are basic and unintuitive unlike the Asus hybrid analog not to mention the deafult profile is rubbish, you have to reassign the "graphics" option of you want the best of color every time you start the PC and it's mildy annoying.  other than those minor issues, the screen is gold. worth every penny but seriously Acer, bundle better cables when i'm buying 1200$+ monitor, (either make em 2M or goldplated or both) if you're on the sides between this and the PG348Q both of them are actually made by LG (the panels) so you're basiclly buying the same thing, just different brand. 4
