 I realize that the blades for the Air King have to work in both directions, so they cannot be scooped for one-direction efficiency. I think that is a built-in design flaw that causes inefficiency in the Air King.  Let’s be realistic: Both of these fans are described as whole-house window fans. A whole-house fan is used as an air removal system as it creates a slight vacuum in one room to pull air into the house through the opened windows in other rooms in the house

 The Air King fan can’t.  Although I have no equipment to measure air flow precisely, it would be fair to say that the Air King fan at the high setting seems to move less air than the Patton fan set at the low setting. No doubt the blade design has a lot to do with that. The three Patton blades are rectangular and scoop-shaped

 I think you could call this review a constructive criticism.  I am giving the Air King four stars, not five, because I think they could have done better by making the fan exhaust only, and then redesigning the fan blades for greater efficiency. I wonder if they will ever do that. Do companies listen to customers?  P

 No doubt the CEO, the pointy-haired boss, and marketing demanded that the fan be bi-directional, but I’ll bet the engineers knew from the beginning that it was a mistake. During hot weather when we need the air flow the most, the fan just does not deliver. It may be marginally satisfactory for an apartment or a very small house, but for anything larger you will be extremely disappointed, as I am. To call it a whole-house fan is just a cruel joke

 Not an easy task in SE Texas. You still get the humidity, and an increase in allergents because you're bringing in outside air. But if you can deal with that and focus on bringing cool air inside in April, May and October, it can help to *significantly* bring down the inside temp and delay when you need to run the central AC to later in the day.

 This fan is a boost from simply 'opening the windows'. Not complicated I do not have good pass through ventilation, as only two of my windows are singles and they are both at 90 degrees to the rest of the house. Helps the insanely hot upstairs too, if you open a window up there  However, it still draws air through the house well. I have window fans as well, but they were a pain to install them in a window and remove them every night

 But if you can deal with that and focus on bringing cool air inside in April, May and October, it can help to *significantly* bring down the inside temp and delay when you need to run the central AC to later in the day...this fan will be even more beneficial in geo areas with drier, cooker nightly temps

 You fire this thing up, then open windows elsewhere in your house to essentially create powerful, artificial cross ventilation, rapidly exchanging the hot air of the day inside your house for the cool night air outside. In the shoulder seasons, a fan like this can eliminate the need for A/C, saving you huge money on your electric bill. We even run it occasionally on a warm winter day to just replace all the stale air in the house.  This thing is no joke

 Mine is in an upstairs, spare bedroom. On cool evenings, I open a couple of windows downstairs on the other side of the house, and crack open a window or two in the master bedroom, then fire this beast up and kick on the various ceiling fans around the house to stir up the air. Then I LEAVE THE ROOM and let this thing work its magic. In my good sized house, it takes maybe an hour or so before the hot stuffy air inside has been replaced with fresh, cool outside air, equalizing the temperature inside and outside

 You want this in a bare window with nothing near it.  Once you kick it on, you can probably just tolerate being in the same room with it on low. On high it is absurdly loud, and even on medium it is quite loud. In other words, do not install this in your bedroom and expect to sleep next to it, it is just too much fan for that

 I've had a rattle or two I needed to fix but that was due to errors in my install. The fan and housing itself is well made.  What do I not like: mainly the fact that it is so noisy. You could run it on low in another room and tolerate leaving it on all night

Big Loud Beast

 She recommended that I discard my fan and purchase a new one. These units are not inexpensive (over $150) and I do not feel that I should discard the entire fan and purchase a new one just because the switch is broken. The fan is only 3 years old and everything is working fine except for the switch.  Air King/Lasko, please help

  I am raising my review up 3 more stars because I really do love this fan, and even though there was a problem initially, customer service resolved my issue very promptly. The only thing missing would be to have stronger materials in the rotary switches (metal would be great here).  ----  I purchased the Air King 9166 in 2015, so it is approximately 3 years old. The fan works and performs great, but the weak point is the rotary control switch

  For now, I will be shopping for a new house fan, and it will definitely not be an Air King this time.  "Dear Air King, The rotary switch on my Air King 9166 Whole House Window Fan is broken. The switch is made of plastic internally and the plastic is now broken so I can no longer operate the fan.  I called customer service at 1-800-233-0268 and I am very disappointed

 The representative told me that there are no parts available for this model, even though it is still being sold. I asked if I could bring it or send it to a repair center, but the representative said that no repair centers exist and that I cannot send my fan back to be repaired. She recommended that I discard my fan and purchase a new one. Initially disappointed with Air King/Lasko customer service but they resolved the issue promptly

 Price is good, CFPM looks good, pretty much on par with any attic fan I would have gotten. Sweet.  Purchase it, it arrives intact. Very secured in the box

 Installation was a breeze (git it??), just wedged it in to my window nice and snug. Your mileage may vary, though.  I crank it on and I swear to god it starts opening a portal to Hell. It put it on Intake-3 (highest level), and it starts sorta slowly with a low pitched whine, but then builds to a moderate crescendo after about 6 seconds

At this point in time my hair is flying back, I'm holding on to the window for balance, and my dining room chairs are beginning to move.  From about 6-10 seconds seems to be a systems check and warm up period, because after 10 seconds the fan goes to 110% on the reactor and it hits FULL power

  I managed to grab a hold of the plug as I was flung away, thus saving Southern California from a subspace breach, and I remembered as I impacted the far wall at Mach 30 that my furniture was still insured. All good.  I'm not sure if my experiences are typical here, but I can say this; it'll cool your house down in a g-dang hurry, if only because it's cold in space as the fan launches you and all you own in to low Earth orbit.  Even on medium speed it does exactly what I got for - exchanging the air inside the house with outside air. Installation was easy enough, even though there was no mounting template or screws in the box. Even though I ordered a new unit the one I received was clearly installed and used by a previous owner. The packing was repurposed, the flanges on the extensions were bent and scratched, the one screw found loose in the box had wood in the threads, there were multiple shipping labels covered over and the tattered box was resealed with duct tape

 The 22" is twice the price of the 16" and is mostly the same fan. I considered the smaller one until I saw the noise levels are about the same so I am going to have to go back to a cruddy ordinary window fan and make the best of it.

 When blowing air in it's a mighty force and gets cool quick. So it really just depends on what your needs are.

 Level 1 is kind of loud, level 3 is like standing next to small plane. And I could hear it loudly buzzing at 50ft away on Level 3. One wouldn't expect to have a conversation in the same room the fan is in if it is on Level 3. It's blows air either out, or directly in to the room/space depending on which way you turn the knob

I was going to get the 16" then thought it looked kinda small and opted for the 20". Wow!!! This thing is loud. I live on the 3rd floor of a 3 family house, so it's a hot box up here. When the sun goes down the walls emanate heat and it can really feel oven-like
