Aiyima D03

A bit less HT, but opens many savings (no centre to buy, and decent stereo amps are cheaper than the AVR you hunted). Of course, then you'd need to change up if you ever wanted to add surrounds / centre, but I mention it as an option. A DAC / amp combo like the Aiyima D03 or Loxjie A30 (both around 200-250 AUD) would give you optical input, and the Loxjie has a headphone amplifier too (if that's relevant for late night listening).

Something like the Aiyima D03 can take an optical feed from your TV and give you plenty of sound for a basic setup. It has a remote, so needing to use a different volume control is manageable. Around $140-150 US too.

Or you could look at the Aiyima D03 and D05 desktop amp/dac combos - both include sub-woofer outputs too, and multiple digital input options. Cheapaudioman just reviewed the D03 last week. ($160).
