If you're looking for an action camera, the best cheap camera we've tested for action video is the AKASO V50X. It's incredibly portable and easy to mount with several mounting accessories in the box. The camera itself feels decently put-together, but it also comes with a protective case that renders it waterproof to an advertised depth of 131 ft (40 m).

Its menu system is easy to navigate, and you can connect the camera to your smartphone through AKASO's companion app, which lets you preview footage and control the camera remotely. The camera has a good battery life, lasting for approximately 90 minutes of continuous recording on a full charge, though battery life can also vary with settings and usage. It has a fantastic video stabilization feature that effectively smooths out camera shake, albeit with a bit of a crop.

Unfortunately, its frame rate options are limited compared to more expensive action cameras, as it can only record 4k video at 30 fps and 1080p video at either 30 fps or 60 fps. That means you can still capture fast action footage in FHD, but it's not great for high-speed recording or slow-motion video. Still, for under $100, this is a serviceable action camera that won't break the bank.

The best GoPro alternative we've tested for those on a budget is the AKASO V50X. It's lightweight and portable, and it feels solidly built, with a rubberized outer coating that provides a more secure grip and a screen that's bright enough to overcome glare. It comes with several mounting accessories in the box, as well as an additional protective case that's advertised to render it waterproof to a depth of 131 ft.

This camera has a fantastic video stabilization feature that effectively smooths out camera shake whether you're shooting in 4k or 1080p and whether you're moving quickly or slowly, although enabling it does incur a significant crop on your videos. It delivers okay video quality when shooting in 4k in brighter lighting conditions, though it's comparable to other GoPro alternatives and performs worse in 1080p and dimly-lit conditions.

Unfortunately, its frame rate options are limited. It can only shoot at 30 or 60 fps in 1080p, which is suitable for capturing fast action but less suited to generating slow-motion footage, and the camera is limited to 30 fps in 4k. On the upside, it has a decent battery life in video, and unlike some other cheaper GoPro alternatives, it also gives you the option to adjust the camera's field of view. Overall, this camera offers lots of value for its price, making it a good choice for those on a budget.

For action video, there's nothing better than a portable action camera, but if you don't want to dish out for a GoPro, there are still some decent options that'll let you capture action footage without spending a fortune. The AKASO V50X is a solid cheap action cam that can shoot in 4k or 1080p. It feels cheap compared to the sturdy build of GoPro cameras or even the DJI Osmo Action, and it's only waterproof when you put it in the included protective case.

On the upside, this thing comes with plenty of mounting accessories in the box and has a simple user interface that's easy to use, making it incredibly easy to get out and start shooting. Frame rates are limited, especially compared to the extensive options offered by a top-of-the-line camera like the GoPro HERO10 Black, but you still get 4k at 30 fps and 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. Bottom line: if you're looking for a straightforward camera for action video that won't cost you a pretty penny, this is a decent action cam for the price.

If you're after something even cheaper, the AKASO V50X is a simple, lightweight action cam that offers decent value for its price. It's super lightweight, and while it doesn't feel as premium as a GoPro or higher-end alternatives like the DJI Osmo Action, it does come with a protective case to give it added durability. You'll need the case if you plan on shooting underwater footage since the camera alone isn't IPX-rated. With the case on, however, you can shoot down to a depth of 131 feet, which is excellent.

The big trade-off with this camera is its frame rate options. It can only shoot a max 60 fps in 1080p, and it's limited to 30 fps in 4k, which leaves you few options for shooting high-speed footage or super slow-motion shots.  So next we are gonna move on to some nighttime recordings and unfortunately the nighttime recordings don't look as good as the daytime ones but let's check those out and I'll be right back. And as you've seen for yourself the nighttime recordings don't look that amazing, the footage is quite grainy and whenever you're using the electronic image stabilization the image kind of looks distorted, it does look much much better whenever I was recording using the gimbal and the electronic image stabilization was off. But keep in mind that this is the case with most action cameras, so these aren't exactly designed to be used at night. So this camera you can record in 4K at 30 frames per second, you can also do 1080p at 90 frames per second or 720p at 120 frames per second and what's impressive is the fact that the EMI stabilization works at any resolution and I guess we should start by checking out some samples with the EMI stabilization on and with the EMI stabilization off so you can see how the EMI stabilization works on it

 But keep in mind that this is the case with most action cameras, so these aren't exactly designed to be used at night. Moving on to another important feature, well this camera can make a Wi-Fi network and it can be controlled from your smartphone, of course you're gonna have to install an app on your smartphone and then you connect to the camera's Wi-Fi network and you can see everything that the camera sees right on your smartphone, you have access to all the recordings that you've done on the camera and you can also change some settings, but nothing nothing crazy and this works good up to 10 meters away from the camera, I would say more than that and it will disconnect. Since this camera has a touch screen it is extremely simple to use as well, so from the main screen if you swipe left or right you can choose in between the video recording mode or the picture taking mode, but if you press in the center at the bottom you can see all the other modes available, so you can have like a driving mode, a time-lapse mode, a photo-lapse mode etc etc, depending what you need. The menu system is divided in three parts as well, so we get the video settings menu and just to give you an example if you go into the video settings menu you can change the resolution and as I mentioned earlier we have a lot of resolutions available, you can turn on or off the image stabilization, you can turn on or off the gyroscope, you can even turn on or off the microphone, the camera's microphone depending if you wanna record the sound or not

 Not that it will be necessary since you can easily charge via power bank while shooting or if you have one of these awesome gimbals that let you charge and shoot at the same time. The waterproof case for diving up to 40 meters is there and I'm gonna tell you more about it later on and all these mounts let you attach the action camera literally anywhere. As usual Akaso are quite tough giving of the hardware specs and this is perhaps because they sometimes find it difficult to use the same components for different batches but because I'm a regular customer and tester, a big thanks to them for confirming my guess that it uses a high silicon chipset and a Sony sensor of 13 megapixels and that looks like a new trend for the good affordable action cams because of the color reproduction, the stabilization capabilities and bearable noise levels. You can notice that low light footage is a little more grainy than usual, often a sign of a smaller physical pixel size, which doesn't make the camera bad at all

Akaso V50X after a Month: The Best $100 4K Action Camera. Period.

 If you need a second look, there’s no need to go back for it.  The 50X offers 10 video resolutions. Along with the four found on the Pro--4K/30fps, 2.7K/30fps, 1080K/60fps and 720K/120fps--the 50X also offers 2K/60fps, 2K/30fps, 1080K/90fps, 1080K/30fps, 720K/60fps and 720K/30fps

 The battery checked out fine. I’ll assume it’s defective and in need of replacement because nothing in good working order can perform this badly.  Connectivity improves with the Roadcam app, which allows for live previewing, capturing, viewing, storing and sharing images with a smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but a trouble-free and more reliable capture alternative to the remote

 But, depending on the scene, with the proper video editing, WDR could offer advantages.  For a 12mp camera, the 50X photo quality is quite good. Compared even to the 20mp Pro image, the 12mp image of the 50X didn't have the digital clumping and excessive contrast of the Pro, and I preferred it. I was impressed, too, with low-light images shot even at a ridiculously high 3200 ISO

  Video image quality for the Pro and 50X is quite comparable, and both are good at this price point. But I’d give a slight nod to the 50X, despite the greenish color bias of the Pro being friendlier to my eye than the oversaturated magenta bias of the 50X. Depending on the lighting, purple fringing is quite noticeable in some images.  The Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) video feature is meant to increase shadow and highlight detail in high contrast lighting

To know it is to like it

 First of all, it is real 4K, there is tons of detail, there's a little bit of noise in daylight, colors are bright, contrast is high, and if you don't like the way the video is, too bad because there's really no way to tweak contrast or saturation. To be honest though, in this resolution, for the most part I found myself extremely satisfied with how the video looked, and I feel that most people buying their first action cam, who this camera seems to be kind of targeted at, will be more than pleased with how this video looks. However, there are some minor flaws in the video quality that stand out at 4K, most notably purple fringing that halos around bright objects like these tree branches here, or disgusting lens flares that show up when you point at the sun, or even when the sun is just out of frame, so I'm guessing that sacrifices were made in terms of lens quality in order to hit a low price point. The stabilisation qualities make the V50X seem like it is suited for vlogging or walk and talk video

 4K 30 has image stabilization, and that image stabilization is quite good in most situations, we'll talk more on that a little bit later. For now let's look at the technical qualities of the 4K. First of all, it is real 4K, there is tons of detail, there's a little bit of noise in daylight, colors are bright, contrast is high, and if you don't like the way the video is, too bad because there's really no way to tweak contrast or saturation. To be honest though, in this resolution, for the most part I found myself extremely satisfied with how the video looked, and I feel that most people buying their first action cam, who this camera seems to be kind of targeted at, will be more than pleased with how this video looks

 That $100 price point is a bit of a tough one though because it's generally where manufacturers start to make big sacrifices in order to meet a cheap price. So let's talk about what the V50X does right and whether or not it's a good camera. Spoiler alert, it is pretty good overall but there are a few things that might be a deal breaker for you. If you're trying to decide between the V50X and the V50 Pro, I'd honestly recommend going for the Pro instead

 Alright and 4K 30fps, same sort of thing, just testing the synchronisation of the audio. The unfortunate part of this is you're probably not going to be able to hear me because the microphone on this camera is utter garbage. It is so quiet, muffled, well I guess it's about similar to most of the real low end action cameras like the 30, 40, 50 dollar ones. It's extremely muffled and lacks clarity and it's just not usable

 Then as you open up the side of the box, you will find a Bluetooth remote control, 10, I repeat 10 different camera mounts, some bandages, tethers and cables, a battery charger and not one but two batteries. Now after the initial struggle of finding out how on earth do you get the waterproof case off the box, you can open it up and see this little piece of wonder. How comprehensive this package is, is something I was very much intrigued by, and I think it played a major part in my decision, why I ended up buying this. By the way, this video is not sponsored, it's not part of any sort of hype campaign, I bought this with my own money, and I'm telling you my own honest opinions here, I promise

 Now obviously we need to talk about the quality of the recording itself, in order to find out why the big companies are charging what they are charging. So I'm switching from our main camera footage to the Akaso, now. I mean of course there is an obvious significant drop in quality, but then again that is expected, as these things are just not made for this kind of filming really. And as a side note, I would just let you know that even the premium devices, the big action cameras, can't really provide decent enough footage indoors

 Customer service and the value of the money I'm dropping for something is really important, to me at least. Okay, enough of all this talking, let's fire this baby up, take it outside and see how it performs, come. Now obviously we need to talk about the quality of the recording itself, in order to find out why the big companies are charging what they are charging.
