* Bass drum mics: Shure Beta 52, AKG D112, Audix D6 are all solid. * Overheads: A pair of Small or Large diaphragm condensers (they don't have to be "matched" for MVP). I started with a pair of MXL 603s and, switched to a pair of Studio Projects B1s, now use some SE sE7s. They all sounded good - costs are very affordable, but honestly if you can get 2 small or large of the same type, run with it.

I thought I was the only one who liked the D112. It's always sounded a lot more like the drum than most other dedicated kick mics. That said, the Beta 52 is generally available used, and is kind of a go-to for an instant "that's a usable kick sound" kind of situation. I like it for live use because of that.

Yes placement is key. A Shure Beta52 or AKG D112 is an underrated/affordable option for floor toms for that “big” tone if you like that and can’t afford MD421s. One thing I REALLY recommend for kick, even when you only have three inputs, is a subkick. Solomon makes these relatively cheap, and in my book having a subkick is more important than pretty much whatever you use as the main dynamic.
