What's your favourite trail shoe?

 That's slightly bigger than I need but only way to keep toes from being irritated by the rubber toe cap. Even with the wide toe box and longer size, the shoe is extremely snug in the heel and midfoot with very firm, structured sides. My "narrow" forefoot does swim a bit in the wide toe box but the snug heel/midfoot fit and lacing system allows rest of foot to be locked down. The relatively curved last doesn't work for my feet at all so looking at other options with straight last

Is it worth having a pair just for trail running?   My regular runs are about 2/3 dirt trail and there is a lot of slop this time of year.  

What is the benefit of the trail running shoes that I see on the shelf at REI and other places?  Is it more than some added ankle support?

Trail runners with trail running shoes

I bought these because of the rave reviews and people seem to love trail runners for backpacking.  However, for my feet and backpacking load, they fell short.  I know I'm not using them for what they were intended.  They are incredibly comfortable over smooth trails, but for hiking in the Sierra Nevada, with baseball size pointy granite rocks, I feel everything through the bottom of the shoe, and my feet were aching after 6 miles

I just today bought a pair of Altra Superior 5s for backpacking, replacing my old 20 pound leather boots. Can I put waterproofing spray on them? Will it ruin the material, or even be effective?

Can you use waterproofing spray on trail runners?

I run exclusively in Altras across their whole lineup (road and trail) and love the brand, but the Superior 5 is just too tight in the toebox compared to previous models. Even got them a half-size larger to provide more space but it still ends up jamming me in the front of my toes in a way to other Superior has done. The Superior 4.5 when half-sized up remains a nearly pitch-perfect trail racer, and I really hope Altra returns to that shape, as this is otherwise a fine shoe

Too Tight In the Toes

Hello guys!

I am going to test the Freedom 4 in a few days and also have the chance to get a pair of the Freedom ISO and ISO 2 in sued but like brandnew condition nearby... 

Do u think it is worth trying all of them?

Are the older models more durable / better in any way, in ur opinion?

In case the ISO's are way better than the Freedom 4, should I leave that, because I will get used to their greatness, and afterwards I will regret because they are not produced anymore and I wont ever be able to enjoy them again?

I would just appreciate ur thoughts on those models in direct comparison, as I have read lots of good things about the older models here!

Not a minimalist shoe.

Even though most of the shoes in my rotation are high stack, I am still a believer that running in a low stack, firmer shoe can help strengthen some lower leg and foot muscle. 

What is your favorite low-stack shoe (these days lets define them as anything with a stack height of less than 30mm in the heel) and why?

Let me open the topic with mine: Boston 9, 26mm. To me  the Boost feels SO nice and responsive and it is juat perfect for anything less than 10 miles. Easily pick up the pace to tempo (it is meant to be a speed shoe) but works well at easy aerobic pace as well. Thanks to its low stack it is very stable. Strangely it doesn't feel lack of cushion to me and I actually the somewhat muted presence of the ground, like a race car with a well tuned suspension.
