Not quite as good as the old Koh-i-noors...

9mm lead, which is what is actually written on the pencil, you can only load one lead stick at a time. Not a huge deal for me as I house all of my pencils, erasures, and lead in one place.

After trying every top-of-the-line drafting pencil I arrived at Alvin.  I started with the .5, loved sharp lead, and expected that smaller would be better.  Not necessarily

So Sharp, Totally Breakable

 The lead smoothly glides across the paper and doesn't drag or lurch like other mechanical pencils seem to do. The lead will come out reliably in small increments. It won't suddenly jet out all at once like I've experienced with cheap plastic mechanical pencils. It's got fantastic fit and finish, feels solid the whole way through and won't jingle or rattle as you write

If you ask how $10 for a pencil can be reasonable, you haven't used an Alvin pencil.

 I originally purchased the Pentel GraphGear 500 .3mm pencil. I liked the Pentel but I slammed it against something and bent the tip. I got another Pentel and that one simply stopped feeding lead

I'm a Civil Engineering major in college. I got the idea to buy a .3mm pencil because I had an instructor who allowed us to use a 3x5 note card for tests. I wanted to have a pencil to be able to write extremely small, legible notes

  About the pencil: This is my second brand of .3mm pencil. I originally purchased the Pentel GraphGear 500 .3mm pencil

 With the Pentel, all the weight was in the tip, making it easy to drop. The Alvin is slightly tip heavy, but not nearly as much; the center of gravity on the Alvin is about 3/4" back from the grip, while the Pentel's center of gravity is just at the end of the grip.  To prevent tip destruction, I placed a black pen cap (from a standard Papermate pen) on the Alvin which fits perfectly--the knurling prevents it from falling off. I couldn't do this with the Pentel because the grip was too fat

  There is an eraser under the cap, but it's quite small. I use a larger eraser instead for when I need to erase things.  0.3 mm lead is hard to find in most stores, but fortunately, Amazon sells it at a reasonable price
