 hey guys welcome to another all bass creations effects tutorials demos and reviews i am the bass nigas and today we have up the ampeg pf 500 head this is a 500 watt head at at four ohms and 300 watts at eight ohm head which has a good amount of features here you got a mute button pad compressor gain um of course you can also get ultra high ultra low you know ampeg staples um you get bass mids um you can select which frequency you want the mid range to affect you also have a treble knob here then you have a mix of fx mix knob which mixes in the effects loop which is really handy um if you don't want it to just um you know be straight up wet you can have dry as you want or you can go all the way over and have completely wet we'll demonstrate that in a little bit now and then you have the um main value knob there so just to point out some things right off the back it's it's very solid metal constructed you know so i do feel like it'll hold up over a long period of time in terms of the durability of it it's actually really light it's not heavy at all um um just one thing i don't like right off the back is the fan is loud it does make quite a bit of noise just sitting around you know but i do think it produces a great tone and for stage and things like that i think it'll be um you know on stage you won't notice that you know anyway so it won't be that big of a deal but it is the the signal coming from it is quiet so yes the fan is loud but the signal is is nice and clean still so let's let's just hear a little bit of it and mind you this is my bass flat as well as the amp is flat as well let's make sure we got everything super flattened out here yeah everything's flat no compressor on yet only thing i have on is the pad and no effects loop or anything so and as you can hear it does have a very nice tone you know to it and that's with nothing on it so not even that's just my bass flat no tone shaping it just it brings it still allows that on that natural tone i like on my ba amp to come through it still uh you know at that nice clarity so a little slapping pop so i very much like the flat sound right there you know all you got to do is really just turn that up a little bit and you'd be in business um let's see let's get to a little maybe add a little compression in there let's go to about um 25 percent uh 25 50 percent oh Let's go up to 75. Let's go up to 75. So yeah, you get quite a bit of compression there all the way up. So as you can hear, when it's all the way up, it really does compress it a lot with it all So the compressor does work very well

 You know, if you if you if you, you know, and also, I tried it out with the SVT for 10s and it sounds super amazing. So, to me, it sounds even better than this than the TC than the BC for 10s I have here, just because I'm guessing that they match up better just because of the brands but with these two with this head and this cabinet. It's kind of like a new school sound cabinet with an old school sound head. And that's not really my sound

 You know, if you boost the highs and everything all the way up, of course, it gets super loud. You know, so, but you shouldn't need to, you know, boost the highs like this. You're playing bass. So, hopefully, you know, if this if you like this amp, the sound, I would say, if you're going to use it live, I will go for it

 So I'm not too fond of both of them on at the same time. But, you know, for some people, they like their bass really scooped like that. Let's hear it with a little finger style. All right

Lightweight 500w Bass Head?

.  But I have a gig tonight and the amp isn't working, leaving me in a rather sour pickle indeed. Yesterday I went to practice a bit, set my chocolate milk down on the table, plugged in my beloved Ibanez, powered everything up, and.

 I saw a comment in a forum that said, "It's odd, you never hear of the 800s doing this, why do the 500s?" So now I'm in a jam - I've found a spare amp I can use for my gig tonight, but in the long run do I try to get the PF-500 fixed? (I'm NOT a tech, in fact I wear shoes with velcro straps on 'em on account of the intricate complexity of laces.) Or do I bite the bullet and get the 800? I dunno..

. nothing. Absolute silence from the amp other'n a very slight hum from the "Fault" light.  Bah! Well, these things happen - sometimes you just get a bad unit

Mixed Feelings

 And like I said, these are merely suggestions. These are starting points for you to begin with. You may already have a rock setting that works absolutely perfectly fine for your particular playing style and the type of music that you're trying to cover. That's totally cool

 And here's another setting that you guys can check out. This is a lot of fun too. If you bring the gain all the way up, you'll add some dirt to your sound. That might be a little too fuzzy, so I'm going to back the gain off a little bit

 You may already have a rock setting that works absolutely perfectly fine for your particular playing style and the type of music that you're trying to cover. That's totally cool. And also keep in mind that these settings don't necessarily have to just be for rock. The particular setting that I started off with and I finished with here with everything set flat and the bass at about three o'clock, that's pretty much a general setting for any amp that I use, particularly the PF 500

 And the easiest thing to do with that is adjust the gain control until that peak light just lights up and then back it off some. Okay, so as you can see right here, the EQ is pretty much set flat, which is where we're going to start. This is what the amp sounds like with it being flat. Okay, now me personally, I like to add a little bit of beef or a little bit of warmth to my sound

Ampeg PF-500 Bass Head - Tone Settings - Rock

 I’ve spent the better half of my extended weekend trying to figure this out, messing with the EQ, tweeter, etc. just to be sorely let down.

It sounds great through my little fender practice amp, but once I plug it into my Ampeg setup it sounds dull, overly rounded, and all in all bleh. Once I kick-on the sansamp it definitely gets ‘fart-y’ and any level of Drive sounds like I’m blowing a speaker on a practice amp. I needed a warm tube like overdrive for apartment practice. ahem, I wanted an ampeg amp for my apartment. It delivers. I could've picked the pf350 cheaper but the GC was out of those

 Somehow Ampeg is able to replicate the "Ampeg sound" , so this will probably appeal to many people. If they were able to combine that with the quality of Markbass or the weight of TC/G-K, etc., they would have a real winner. It concerns me to read about so many reliability issues

I just picked one of these up used that is in nearly new condition. Pros: sounds like an Ampeg; EQ section works well; enough power for a small to medium gig; lots of features; compressor works very well and does not color the sound. Cons: heavy compared to TC, Markbass, G-K, etc.; pots and switches have a low-quality/fragile feel; headphone jack is cheap and 1/8"

 Okay, so now we're going to try to play around a little with the Mark III bass here, just to get you a little bit of a comparison. So this was with all the pickups engaged here. It sounds kind of growly. I'm not sure, we'll have to look it up later

 So I'm going to do the bridge pickup right now, and I'm going to boost the low mids here, just a little bit, as we did before on the quarter flex. Okay. Okay. Playing it a little bit different

 You have, first of all, not starting with the most important, but something that intrigued me is an FX loop that you can blend back in. So if you have something like a delay or a filter, and you don't want to go all filter and all delay, you can just add just the right amount to it. You have a compressor built in. You have a gain knob

 Twelve o'clock is always neutral with this. And we have a little bit of compression here. So let me do a lot of compression. So for slapping, it seems to work fine

Ampeg Portaflex PF-500 Review

You can get a great range of tones out of it, and it's def powerful enough to work with the 8x10. Loud enough for virtually any gig, and able to go direct with no cab at all if the gig calls for it.

Thanks to everyone whose helped me start putting together my first doom rig. I knew I wanted an Anpeg 8x10 since I saw it. And now im picking up one for $400 (tolex is beat to all hell, hut everything is in working order) 

NOW- I gotta find an amp. Im not really into the orange stuff or really anything suuper expensive. I do have a guy trying to sell me a refurbished Ampeg Vt-22 but its $800. Im mostly interested in Dooming this rig out, nut I wouldn’t mind being able to flip over to some fat Jamiraquai tone visa vi “Deeper Underground” clean tone @ 3:00
