So for starters, if you're using the iPhone X right now, should you invest in an upgrade? Well, maybe, maybe not. I know, very helpful, but it really does depend on your personal situation. In short, the factors that are most likely to leave you wanting more probably will revolve around the battery life and photography

I used to be a full on PC guy (lifelong). desktop laptop and android. fuck. I dispise apple fanboys. I was proud of being the "tech savvy guy". Fast foward few years later (2019), I started to notice windows forcefully update my computer causing me losing a shit ton of work. And it didn't happen once or twice. It shits on me all the time. I got to point that I bought a mac pro for a try. Don't get me wrong. The adjustment took a month or so. But it's so fucking liberating to have CONTROL OVER MY OWN PROPERTY!!! I can refuse to update til the day my penis falls off! I have seen anyone saying THIS as the reason why they swtich from Windows to Mac, so I just want to make the first post and hopefully resonate with others.

Microsoft does not RESPECT my choice over my property. and I will take my money where a company respect my choice.

BTW, since then, I bought ipad pro, iphone 12, ipod pro... the whole shebang.. never look back.

Lenovo P700
My first phone...and also the one I hate the most. Single-core  processor and ~600 MB of RAM translates to lag in almost everything, and ICS means a lot of apps are incompatible. Custom ROM is not an option since you know...MediaTek. 


Galaxy S3
Feels like a rocket compared to the previous Lenovo. 1 GB of RAM is somewhat lacking in 2016, but the XDA community kept it alive after Samsung stopped the updates. ~~Which is a good thing since TouchWiz of this era is pretty bad~~ Countless of ROMs were flashed on top of it (thanks to the huge dev scene), but my favourite is Temasek's CyanogenMod 13 build. I miss CMTE :(


Galaxy S5
Probably the first phone that I can use without having major issues. Great screen, camera and good enough performance. Waterproof is a nice feature, although it's more of a gimmick than anything. TouchWiz is better but I still find stock Lollipop/MM to have better UI in general.


Exynos Galaxy Note 4
Was actually an AT&T Note 4 with an Exynos board in it, since the original MB died (SD805 Note 4s are notorious for dying after a period of time). Similar to the Galaxy S5, but S-Pen and better designs are nice addition.


LG V20
Mixed feeling about this one...camera is great but the phone suffered from serious overheating issues and screen ghosting. Other than that it was alright as a daily, up until I bricked it by installing the Pie update. Still regret to this day


LG V30
Basically the V20 but in a smaller body...and have most of its issues fixed. Great design and perfectly usable as a daily, although the gamer in me still wants a better SoC. Also very slow updates because LG.


LG V50
Current phone. Upgraded V30 with better chips, camera and the likes. And somewhat frequent updates since it's the Korean variant (LG only gives regular updates to domestic models). Safely to say life's good for me.


I don't want to upgrade for a while, but smartphone SoCs gets outdated real fast ~~in mobile games obviously~~. My V50 is already struggling in new titles, and it will only get worse as time goes by. Hope it'll be good for at least a year or two.

Samsung Galaxy S2 (I was slow to the whole smartphone movement, mainly because they were prohibitively expensive for me at the time): ended up owning 4 of these over the years. The phone that introduced me to custom ROMs and kernels.

Blackberry 8520: I grew to detest this device, mainly because the battery life sucked, and rebooting it took forever.

iPhone 5: kept it for 2 days, swapped it with the next phone on my list as I couldn't deal with iOS 6. The final straw was how cumbersome it was to set a custom ringtone. I loved the black and slate colour, and it's still my favourite iPhone design after the X.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: loved this phone, really established the Note as a unique product line. Custom ROM scene was not as big as the S2, but the massive screen and battery were truly useful.

Nexus 4: I actually wanted the Galaxy Nexus, but I couldn't find one anywhere. Luckily, the Orange Store sold these and I snagged one. Beautiful device, but the battery life was abysmal, and 16GB of storage really didn't cut it for me. The camera was pretty hopeless, too. But, ParanoidAndroid 4.4.4 on this device was so good.

Nexus 5: got the max capacity 32GB variant, in white. The soft touch back was so nice, and the main drawcards for me where the colour-accurate display and the wireless charging. It didn't have great battery life either, but the camera was a lot better than it got credit for- I remember using it to record clips at an Eminem concert that looked surprisingly good. Always regret selling it. 

Samsung Galaxy S4: great phone, but I really disliked TouchWiz and the faux metal band, especially after coming from the stock Android and the minimalist build of the Nexus 5. Gave the phone to my then-girlfriend (now wife), who had it replaced twice, before upgrading to the S5.

LG G2: was both an upgrade and downgrade from the Nexus 5, but I liked it better than the S4. Better screen and speakers, and the rear-mounted buttons were really nice to use. But LG's skin was barely tolerable, and my variant (D802) was a bit behind on ROM development. It was a shame, because the phone was otherwise excellent.

Sony Xperia E1: needed to take a step back financially, and ended up getting this cheapie. Worst device I have ever used, bar none.

Sony Xperia S: even though it was considerably older than the E1, it was so much better in every way. Custom ROMs kept it alive for years. I still used it (not as my daily) until last year, and it was still quite functional. The battery life tanked pretty hard though, it was tethered to a charger almost 24/7.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge: my return to flagship phones, and it was a great overall package. I actually wanted the Note 7, but we all know how that ended up, and for whatever reason, my carrier did not have the Huawei Mate 9 in stock. My wife used this for about 3 years before handing it over to her sister, and it still works pretty flawlessly today.

Samsung Galaxy S8+: getting this device allowed me to pass my S7 edge along to my wife, who needed a better phone for work. I didn't hate the fingerprint reader location, but it was terrible. Ended up also getting the Gear S2 Classic, which worked really well with this phone. But the S8 series still had a few unpolished aspects around the UX- the odd stutter here and there that really didn't befit a flagship device.

Google Pixel 2 XL: I used an OG Pixel for work for a few weeks, and it blew me away. At the time, the Pixel 3 had just dropped, so I settled for the 2 XL. It really is a phenomenal experience, and most users would be very satisfied with what Google puts out. But, coming from a Samsung, there were small things I did miss: scrolling screenshots, separate ringtone and notification volume levels, an equaliser, etc. I still have it, and use it daily as a secondary phone. It's now running a custom Android 11 ROM.

Samsung Galaxy Note10+: it was either this, a OnePlus 8 Pro, or a Pixel 4 XL. I think had I snagged the Amazon deal in May last year, I'd be using the 4 XL. But I was enticed by what Samsung was offering, their partnership with Microsoft, and the capabilities of DeX and the rest of the ecosystem. Also, I got it with brand new Buds+ for less than half what I would have paid for a OnePlus 8 Pro. I used the difference to get my wife an S20+ for her birthday. I'm probably gonna keep this until at least 2023, and see what the Note line, if it even exists, has to offer then.

Honourable mentions:

1.  Nexus 7 (2013): great little tablet, but the 16:9 aspect ratio meant it wasn't ideal for comics and ebooks, and lacked stereo speakers. 
1. iPad Mini 2: great little tablet. Only sold it because it didn't get enough use, and was the 32GB variant.
1. Huawei P9 lite: surprisingly good for the few weeks I loaned it. Too bad the standard model only had 16GB of storage.
1. Huawei P8: the opposite of the P9 lite, actually. While EMUI was fairly interesting, it had horrific battery life and performance in my time using it. The Kirin 930 chip was horrible.
1. HTC One M8: I sadly never got to own this phone, even though I bought it in the amazing blue colourway it came in. I eventually got my money back from eBay and got the S7 edge.
1. iPhone X / XS / XS Max: used for work, but the X in particular really sold me on proper gesture navigation, well-done haptic feedback, and using an OS that just seemed polished. Though, the limitations within iOS prevent me from switching completely.

I've probably missed a few other phones over the years, and definitely excluded the non-smartphones from this list.

<div class="md"><p>Samsung Galaxy S2 (I was slow to the whole smartphone movement, mainly because they were prohibitively expensive for me at the time): ended up owning 4 of these over the years. The phone that introduced me to custom ROMs and kernels.</p>

<p>Blackberry 8520: I grew to detest this device, mainly because the battery life sucked, and rebooting it took forever.</p>

<p>iPhone 5: kept it for 2 days, swapped it with the next phone on my list as I couldn&#39;t deal with iOS 6. The final straw was how cumbersome it was to set a custom ringtone. I loved the black and slate colour, and it&#39;s still my favourite iPhone design after the X.</p>

<p>Samsung Galaxy Note 2: loved this phone, really established the Note as a unique product line. Custom ROM scene was not as big as the S2, but the massive screen and battery were truly useful.</p>

<p>Nexus 4: I actually wanted the Galaxy Nexus, but I couldn&#39;t find one anywhere. Luckily, the Orange Store sold these and I snagged one. Beautiful device, but the battery life was abysmal, and 16GB of storage really didn&#39;t cut it for me. The camera was pretty hopeless, too. But, ParanoidAndroid 4.4.4 on this device was so good.</p>

<p>Nexus 5: got the max capacity 32GB variant, in white. The soft touch back was so nice, and the main drawcards for me where the colour-accurate display and the wireless charging. It didn&#39;t have great battery life either, but the camera was a lot better than it got credit for- I remember using it to record clips at an Eminem concert that looked surprisingly good. Always regret selling it. </p>

<p>Samsung Galaxy S4: great phone, but I really disliked TouchWiz and the faux metal band, especially after coming from the stock Android and the minimalist build of the Nexus 5. Gave the phone to my then-girlfriend (now wife), who had it replaced twice, before upgrading to the S5.</p>

<p>LG G2: was both an upgrade and downgrade from the Nexus 5, but I liked it better than the S4. Better screen and speakers, and the rear-mounted buttons were really nice to use. But LG&#39;s skin was barely tolerable, and my variant (D802) was a bit behind on ROM development. It was a shame, because the phone was otherwise excellent.</p>

<p>Sony Xperia E1: needed to take a step back financially, and ended up getting this cheapie. Worst device I have ever used, bar none.</p>

<p>Sony Xperia S: even though it was considerably older than the E1, it was so much better in every way. Custom ROMs kept it alive for years. I still used it (not as my daily) until last year, and it was still quite functional. The battery life tanked pretty hard though, it was tethered to a charger almost 24/7.</p>

<p>Samsung Galaxy S7 edge: my return to flagship phones, and it was a great overall package. I actually wanted the Note 7, but we all know how that ended up, and for whatever reason, my carrier did not have the Huawei Mate 9 in stock. My wife used this for about 3 years before handing it over to her sister, and it still works pretty flawlessly today.</p>

<p>Samsung Galaxy S8+: getting this device allowed me to pass my S7 edge along to my wife, who needed a better phone for work. I didn&#39;t hate the fingerprint reader location, but it was terrible. Ended up also getting the Gear S2 Classic, which worked really well with this phone. But the S8 series still had a few unpolished aspects around the UX- the odd stutter here and there that really didn&#39;t befit a flagship device.</p>

<p>Google Pixel 2 XL: I used an OG Pixel for work for a few weeks, and it blew me away. At the time, the Pixel 3 had just dropped, so I settled for the 2 XL. It really is a phenomenal experience, and most users would be very satisfied with what Google puts out. But, coming from a Samsung, there were small things I did miss: scrolling screenshots, separate ringtone and notification volume levels, an equaliser, etc. I still have it, and use it daily as a secondary phone. It&#39;s now running a custom Android 11 ROM.</p>

<p>Samsung Galaxy Note10+: it was either this, a OnePlus 8 Pro, or a Pixel 4 XL. I think had I snagged the Amazon deal in May last year, I&#39;d be using the 4 XL. But I was enticed by what Samsung was offering, their partnership with Microsoft, and the capabilities of DeX and the rest of the ecosystem. Also, I got it with brand new Buds+ for less than half what I would have paid for a OnePlus 8 Pro. I used the difference to get my wife an S20+ for her birthday. I&#39;m probably gonna keep this until at least 2023, and see what the Note line, if it even exists, has to offer then.</p>

<li> Nexus 7 (2013): great little tablet, but the 16:9 aspect ratio meant it wasn&#39;t ideal for comics and ebooks, and lacked stereo speakers. </li>
<li>iPad Mini 2: great little tablet. Only sold it because it didn&#39;t get enough use, and was the 32GB variant.</li>
<li>Huawei P9 lite: surprisingly good for the few weeks I loaned it. Too bad the standard model only had 16GB of storage.</li>
