What's the state of the art in (non-VA) digital synthesizers?

As headline says. I figured it would be usable just for sound testing, but even for that was kinda bleh. Worked fine with external controller for aftertouch, though I could not test poly.

MIcrofreak is affordable and sound engine neat; capacitive keyboard is terrible.

 I think the thing that it's got on offer, as I say, is just a different flavor of sand. I mean it's not like many other things I can think of, but it's part of this old new movement of more digitally based and hybrid /, analog mono /. Para phonics ins and I think it holds itself up. Well I mean the price is about 299 UK pounds, other countries

 So there's a few interesting things going on. Additionally, there's a 35-point modulation matrix here, and this is a something that you just kind of dial in press and then hit the amount of modulation and if you can see there, so it gives you this sort of each of these can be active. So it's not like one on each row: every single one can be active and they're also assignable ones here, say press and then you turn any knob on the control panel and that will be assigned and that can also be assigned today. Then you can create circular routing, so there's some interesting concepts here and it's it's this area of kind of hybrid

Think around $500 dollars or so, but preferably closer to the $200-$300 range if at all possible. Id especially like something that can do strings or leads, think something similar to the string sound found in Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. I look forward to seeing your guys suggestions!

Good budget synths for post-punk/goth type sounds?

I was really excited about this synth--I followed the pre-release info and eagerly ordered one when it finally came out. The results were decidedly mixed: there are some very cool features, but way too many bugs and overall it just doesn't do anything that my other gear can't do better. The main issue is that the midi implementation with my DAW simply doesn't work--it sends midi data but is unable to receive. This may be a defective unit or (more likely) a firmware issue--this problem has been reported on other message boards

Arturia has been unresponsive to a tech support ticket and posts on their community discussion board, so this is going back

Not ready for prime time

 The micro freak nails, the interface to the t, striking a great balance between ease of use and complexity, hands-on control and a clever layout on the available front panel real estate programming new sounds is easy and it encourages experimentation and it's just plain good old fun. The mod matrix makes broughting a breeze, and newcomers to synthesizers will also benefit from it that they can see how their favorite presets are set up, and you can just start taking notes from them when you start diving in. So it's basically like a little tutorial in the box. It'S also great for live performance as you get easy access to its most important parameters, as well as the benefit from the eccentric little keyboard and its polyphonic aftertouch number three immutable instrument as that for a magic trick

It has a very interesting take on sequencers and arpeggiators and also provides you four lanes of motion sequencing to boot. So that's pretty much the micro freak on paper, but underneath the spec sheet. What'S really so great about it, let me tell you number one: is the price there's really no two ways about it? If there was ever an underpriced synth, this is it

I can't really think of any other hardware synth on the market right now that offers you so much versatility and sound design, quality and performance control in this price bracket. If you go even further and look for it in the used market, you're bound to find it even cheaper and by then it's really a no-brainer

 in fact, the entire unit has a much cheaper feel than the brute series. I would have paid another $100 to have it with a higher build quality.  Now on to the good: the sounds are incredible. So much better than the Korg mini/monologue
