Some websites still list this as a 155Hz display, but that was its originally announced spec. But with adaptive sync, the optimal overdrive mode isn't clear with no single option offering good performance across the refresh range

 So when you choose a balanced mid-level overdrive option to avoid as much overshoot as possible, performance isn't that much different from competing monitors like the ViewSonic VX2758 and also the Pixio PX7 Prime. If I had to generalise, performance among those three monitors is pretty similar. However, one area where the VG278U suffers is 60Hz performance, where it's nowhere near as good as the two monitors I just mentioned. For whatever reason, ASUS haven't been able to optimise the 60Hz experience nearly as well as ViewSonic for example

What is a good 1440 144hz monitor with gsync

Good but could have been better

 As to the display itself, the key thing here is the balance of IPS image quality, a 2560x1440 resolution and the 27-inch screen size. It just makes for a really practical, sharp looking display that's great for work and gaming. 27-inch displays with a 1080p resolution are fine for gaming but can feel a little cramped for most other things, while 4K models involve the headache of having to use window scaling to make the desktop readable. As for that IPS image quality, sure enough it's pretty good

Best 1440p 144hz monitor for gaming?

 I’m totally anal when it comes to color. Colors are like numbers; they do not lie. I will update this review when I have played a few hours. I have not yet watched a movie with this monitor but I suspect dark scenes will be a problem

 I did enjoy playing with the 32”, as smooth as butter, a huge improvement over 75hz. I look forward to playing with this VG27AQL1A, but have to get color right first. I’m totally anal when it comes to color. Colors are like numbers; they do not lie

 I just read the rtings review and I am shocked. They state that this monitor VG27AQL1A is color accurate?!. They should say in “racing mode it is quite color accurate compared to other gaming monitors, but is not nearly as accurate as a professional monitor”. It’s true their icc profile did help somewhat

 So really, really versatile, giving you 180 degrees of total adjustment, giving you the perfect viewing angles regardless of your setup design and circumstance. In terms of included connectivity, you've got a few good options in the box from a DisplayPort cable, which is my personal favourite connector type. It's just the most versatile, especially for gaming in 2021, but also a HDMI cable that's still capable of satisfying the full 1440p 165 hertz bandwidth of this top panel. As if that wasn't enough, you've also got the included monitor power adapter, super slim line, it's kind of mini PSU unit with then your Cloverleaf UK power adapter

 And there we have it, so we're currently running around about 130-140 frames per second, so not quite utilising the full range of the 165 Hz refresh rate, but getting pretty close and you can see here colours look great. I'm standing at quite a side angle to the monitor as well, colour reproduction is strong and the vividness and accuracy of the colours isn't really changing too much. It is genuinely amazing to see an IPS panel when it comes to high refresh rate displays. Often the quality of the screen is something you sacrifice when you push more and more frame rate, but in this case we really have got the best of both worlds

 So if you want the bezel on the left or the right hand side, you've got both options available to you. As if that wasn't enough, you also get a nice degree of rotation on the base itself without this actually moving, which is always great to see all the way around to 90 degrees. So really, really versatile, giving you 180 degrees of total adjustment, giving you the perfect viewing angles regardless of your setup design and circumstance. In terms of included connectivity, you've got a few good options in the box from a DisplayPort cable, which is my personal favourite connector type

 I was unable to notice any increase in input lag or response time. The monitors menu shows the refresh rate and I noticed the value changing while gaming. The value matched the in-game FPS counter. Everything while gaming appeared to be smooth, without any noticeable lag, ghosting, screen tearing, etc

Contrast stays consistent at around 1100 to 1 regardless of the OSD brightness, which runs from 137 to 380 nits

 But now let's get on with the most important part. How does the screen actually look? By default, the screen ships in something ASUS calls racing mode, which is remarkably good for a default configuration. With only a few small adjustments to the color temperature setting, you can achieve very accurate grayscale tracking, but I'll show that in a moment.  There are two HDMI ports, one display port, a headphone jack, and a power input for the external power supply. Oh, and it does have speakers, which may be useful in a pinch.  The VG27AQ is a standard gamut panel, and looking here at HDFR's color checker, a 1.7 delta E average is a strong result for the default out-of-box setup. This is why I'm so impressed with what ASUS has shipped as the default. A user could buy this monitor, touch nothing in the OSD, and have a color-accurate monitor
